I guess there's another tornado over by my bother'shouse to the south of us and both are heading toward my Dad and Mom's house....can't raise them on the phone though! Going to head out to see if there's anything I can do! Roddy...update? +Chi-Town Cacher Posted June 9, 2009 Share Posted June 9, 2009 Hi everybody. As you can probably guess I also live in Michigan where Rod lives, although on the other side of the state. I too was concerned about Rod and his family so I went to all three of the local network stations websites this morning and I see no mention of any tornado damage here in the state. It's a pretty slow news market here where I live and they usually at least have a small news article if there is any tornado damage even if it's over on the other side of the state in Rods area. Thankfully Rods message specifically said it was a funnel cloud going over his house and not a tornado (if my memory is right if it stays in the air without touching ground it is a funnel cloud and obviously much better than being on the ground and being a tornado causing damage or worse). My guess is that he probably stayed over there till late and had to hit the sack as soon as he got home. Like you all I am concerned, but I'm focussing on what I wrote in the first paragraph to keep the worry to a minimum. While I'm sure we'll here good news from him soon I'm hedging my bets and keeping him and his family in my thoughts and prayers. Hopefully we'll hear an update soon so we can all breath a big sigh of relief. Quote Link to comment

But no reports that I can find of anything actually touching the ground. Its a nice here today and Rod has to get up early to go to work so I bet he didn't have time to update us. I did go out last night and we looked around to make sure all was well, only minor damage was spotted here and there, likely from wind and not a tornado! Work work work!! right after I posted the above I was notified that this cache had been published GC1TFAX I was one hill away from a lot of the damage, so was safe but close. It makes quite an impression on a 14 yr old when NG tanks are rolling down the streets of your town in an area where the tallest building remains are 5 foot. Soldiers stationed on corners with orders to shoot looters while sobbing people search for belongings in rubble that may have come from miles away. but that same 14 yr old saw the determination and the will to clean up, rebuild and improve in the wake of such a disaster. I gotta tell you there is a lot of history out there about Rhodes, and I had a good time reading up about your island home (and learned a bit too..) He, his 3 sons and his grandsons were Olympic winners!!!! I think that this guy won all athletic events in the ancient times (Olympic games were the most famous!)!!! I did go out last night and we looked around to make sure all was well, only minor damage was spotted here and there, likely from wind and not a tornado! The funnel cloud we spotted was just one of three reported in the area, luckily, none were reported to have touched down! It was pretty crazy too, KAboom had just walked in the door when my weatherbug chirped warning me of severe weather. It had been sunny all afternoon until that point! And yes, I was up too early this morning, 4am! Work work work!! Glad to hear that everything is ok. Good luck tonight watching the game. I wanna see Crosby's tears flowing!! Talk to you soon! Some of the rules in navy that still exist are inspired or taken from the Rhodian sea rules! Rhodes was one of the richest cities in Greece (had its own gold coins - silver or copper coins were in use generally)! They were good soldiers and very good slingers (it was a weapon at that times)! Other cities were taking Rhodian slingers and had them in their army with pay! when one ofthe greatest armies (Dimitrios Poliorkitis) of that times with new weapons etc tried to "take" the city, Rhodians were so good that a year passed and nothing could be done, the guy left and all his weapons stayed behind!!!! Rhodians sold them and make a Huge statue... but that is an other story.... They also loved arts! Only Romans managed to take Rhodes! When thei general left back to Rome he took 3000 statues with him!!! All were from Roads, parks... They loved to make huge things, including their houses... so other cities some tims were laughed at them, but Rhodes was the only island that had one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world..... Rhodians were good diplomats so when all greece was under Romans, they were still independent as allies of them and they has permission to continue cutting their own coins (but only in copper!). In some periods, Rhodes controled a big part of Asia coast too (Caria)! When Romans finally took Rhodes (when romans has a kind of civil war to see who will be the emperor, Rhodians made the mistake! they choosed a guy who finaly lost! the winner stoped Rhodes for being a free port of the empire and made Delos as a free port and after some time when rhodes started geting poor they took it! The Roman general who took Rhodes was an ex student here! ) they were so afraid of the city walls that destroyed them and made a law not to be rebuild!!! If you came in Rhodes now, you will see the medieval walls which are much thinner and sorter!!! In some places you will see what is left from the ancient walls and you will have an idea... During Roman occupatian, a Roman emperor lived here for some years! He loved the island and stayed! I think he was Titus but I am not so sure! when he was leaving from the island, he demanded as a present a statue Rhodians had made and it was in a park or a road...! The statue showed laocoon (The troyan priest...) and his 2 sons while they are being killed by 2 snakes..! Rhodians couldn't refuse and he took it! After many centuries the statue was found in italy and it is now in Vatican museum! we have in the palace of the knights, a copy! It is said that just because a hand of the statue was missing, the pope called Michelangelo to fix it, but he refused because the statue was so perfect that he was afraid that his work wouldn't be that good!!!! It was placed in Samothrace by Rhodians after a navy victory (Nike is Victory in Greek!)! The base of the statue was a front side of an ancient ship! Partial inscription on the base of the statue includes the word "Rhodhios" (Rhodes), indicating that the statue was commissioned to celebrate a naval victory by Rhodes, at that time the most powerful maritime state in the Aegean! Olympos mountain was the mountain Greeks believed that gods were living! So actually he said that there is nothing left for you on earth to see! Diagoras was very happy and after that, he died in his sons arms! Diagoras was a very strong and very tall athlet! He was from a royal family! He never lost a fight in all games and he never avoided any punch from other athlets! He was very famous and respected man! He never fell on the ground in a stadium! Even in his death! Some coins are real pieces of art!!! Some coins also had the name of the judge of the ruler at that time and by that it is easy to know when it was minted! Rhodes most of the times, had on one side had the head of nymph Rhodes (in copper coins), or the head of Hellios! They also believed that these coins were actually the 30 pieces of silver Judas took to betray Jesus!! so, for some people, the coins of rhodes were cursed!!!! Later in modern times everything was "fixed", when acrheologist found that the 30 pieces of siver were probably shekel silver coins from the city of Tyros in Phoenicia, that were in use a lot, at that the time of Jesus! these shekel coins had God Melkart on one side and an eagle on the other!
