+homer-dog Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 While hiking north of Montecito, CA, I stumbled upon an ammo can. It was labeled the "Saddle Rock" cache which makes sense as I was on the Saddle Rock Trail. I signed the log and put it back. When I got home I tried to log it but the cache is not listed. This is not a new cache as there were logs in the notebook going back to at least 2004. Does anyone know anything about this cache? Is there a way for me to log it? Thanks for the input! Quote
+StarBrand Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 Did you try looking for it on one of the "other" cache listing sites? Quote
Trinity's Crew Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 (edited) Never mind. Edited November 12, 2007 by Trinity's Crew Quote
+Dgwphotos Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 Was it on top of a peak? It could be a summit register. Is there a such thing as a trail register? Quote
Uberquandary Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 Or it could have been archived and the owner never picked it up. When was the most recent log? Quote

+briansnat Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 (edited) This one? oops I see Isonzo Karst beat me to it. Edited November 13, 2007 by briansnat Quote

He visited the site less than two months ago and still has an active cache. What makes him long gone? Quote
+J-Way Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 To answer the OP's last question, yes you can log it online even though it's been archived. Just use briansnat's link. Quote
+homer-dog Posted November 13, 2007 Author Posted November 13, 2007 Yep, Isonzo and all found it. I guess I found the last stage of an archived multi. Now the burning question is, should I log it or not. For some reason it feels wrong to log an archived cache. Quote
+ZSandmann Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 You signed the log, I'd do it. No shame in that, in fact I'd say you earned it more than someone that did the multi. Your geosenses must be very fine tuned. I would also try and contact the owner and see if he would adopt it out or let you remove the container if he is not using it on another caching site. Quote
+Isonzo Karst Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Log a find, or post a note. Log something to the cache page so that the cache owner knows that the can is still out there. It may not be where he left it, which might explain it not having been picked up. Or it may be live as part of some other cache on some other site. If it were my multi cache and you stumbled on the final, you'd be welcome to log a find. You did, in fact, find it. Quote
+wandering4cache Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 (edited) I would log it! I hate geolitter. The owner needs to go pick it up. And if he doesn't after a while, its finders keepers for whoever goes out there to remove it. Edited November 13, 2007 by wandering4cache Quote
+homer-dog Posted November 13, 2007 Author Posted November 13, 2007 ZSandmann: My geosenses were uncanny on that day. I was going up the wrong trail and I stopped to catch my breath, looked to my right and the Ammo Can was about five feet away. Purely coincidental. Since I didn't know anything about the cache I assumed it was listed so I didn't write down coordinates and such. The next time I run into a surprise cache, I'll be careful and take down some more information. It looks like the consensus is to log it so I will. Thanks to everyone who responded. Quote
+egami Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 I wouldn't log it...in fact, if it's been archived and isn't being maintained I'd probably retrieve it if possible. Shouldn't of been left out there, imo. Actaully, I'd probably try contacting the owner first and if no response I'd retrieve it...or maintain it and re-host it. Quote
+ZSandmann Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 I agree with everything after the ... egami, but I think the find is legit, they signed the log. Of course the owner has final say. From the cache page it sounds like it was a puzzle multi and part of the puzzle disappeared so it was archived by the reviewer when the owner did not respond. So I doubt it is cross-listed and it should probably be removed if the owner can't be contacted. Quote
+Roaring_Fork Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Did you try looking for it on one of the "other" cache listing sites? What other sites are you referring to? I am relatively new to this great activity and want to learn as much as possible. Thanks, Greg Ps. I hope this post does not violate any Groundspeak policies. Quote
