Poker Fun Run

How good are your bluffing skills? Can you keep a poker face when playing poker against the 2oldfarts? Who has the better hand, you or the "Judges"?

Just remember this is only a friendly game of poker!

Anyone caught cheating will be expected to supply the prize for 1st place in the next contest! And it better be NICE! CHEAT is not acceptable. Lucky for ya'll, that this isn't the wild west of the 1800's or cheaters would be shot. 04.gif:)

The hands and their point value.

1pt) 1 pair (Jacks or better) = letters only *J* or better (J,J K,K L,L R,R etc.)

2pts) 2 pair = 2 of the same # (First digit of the designation) &/or letters twice - example - 2, 2 + 5, 5 / B, B + M, M / 4, 4 + L, L

3pts) 3 of a Kind = 3 of the same letters

4pts) Straight = Consecutive letters only

5pts) Flush = 5 of the same line #

8pts) Full House = 2 of one letter designation and 3 of another letter designation.

20pts) 4 of a Kind = 4 of the same letter.

40pts) Straight Flush = 5 Consecutive Letters of the same line # (see example below)

100pts) Royal Flush = "A", "K", "Q", "J", "T" of the same line #

All are "Designation Only" using the "FIRST digit &/or line #" on the GC benchmark page.

A benchmark can only be used once and must have its own PID# on GC. Benchmark disks only, no Intersection Stations. So use your finds wisely.

You can only use each hand once (unless you earned the top bonus * ).

You must *Show your hand* by first telling us which hand you are claiming and then providing links to each benchmark in the hand. If your picture of the benchmark can't be Easily read, then it WILL be disqualified. Pratice your picture taking before the contest starts. Close-ups are prefered, but as long as it can be clearly read it will be accepted. Remember, It is a couple of OLD farts WITH glasses who will be Judging the pictures & if they can't read the designation - oh well.

Bonuses:

If it has a precious DNF or has a benchmark that is OLD or VERY OLD in the hand - you MUST let us know to get your Bonus Points. OLD = 5 Pts for pre-1950. VERY OLD = Older than the 2oldfarts or Harry Dolphin, worth 10 Pts for pre-1930. Previous logged DNFs. = 5 Pts (Of course, you need to have found that DNF.) 1 bonus per hand with any of the following, so be sure to tell us if you're claiming a bonus when you log each hand.

DNF means that the last log for the benchmark must be a DNF that was logged prior to the posting of this thread.

*If you complete all hands, you will get a *bonus* worth 25 Pts + the permission to start all over again with logging each hand with new finds. Let us know if you are claiming this bonus!

You can't have found the benchmark in the last 12 months. (You may log it as a note if you have found it over a year ago. (Remember we will be looking at all the pictures already logged for these benchmarks.) )

Prizes will be awarded for 1st through 5th place and a drawing for the special prizes. To be eligible for the drawing you will need to have found at least one of the above listed hands. These prizes were donated by Berntsen. Other mystery (?) prizes to be announced.

The sign up period will run from 8/01/07 until 8/31/07. No signing up after 08/31/07. If you have not signed up, you will not be eligible for any prizes!

The contest will run for 2 months -- 9/01/07 until 11/04/07 (sundown).

The 2oldfarts are the judges and their decisions will be final.

Strategy planning: Obviously you would use the 5 pids listed below as a "Straight Flush", but what about the next 5? Do you use them as "3 of a kind" and "a pair" or do you go for another "X" for "4 of a kind" or "hold" them as "A full house"?

Decisions, decisions!!!

H 150

G 150

F 150

E 150

D 150

X 5

X 510

X 148

WAUNETA

W 5

PAT

P 51 -- "J or better" (any letter that follows "I" in the alphabet as in J, K, L, Q, S, W, Z, but not G, H, or I.)

5014.03

5118.76 -- pair of 5's

Aren't ya'll glad we didn't declare the Royal Flush to be made up of the letters 2OLDFARTS? !!

Comments accepted for the next 2 weeks (until sign up starts).

Edit to clarify what qualifies as a DNF.

Wow, this contest is evil! Very nice!

After two quick reads through the rules, just two questions for now....

1--- No problemo with the "no intersection station" rule, just curious why the benchmark disc only rule. It would be the easiest to verify for sure, but could a chiseled cross or similar BM that is verified by a clear pic of the GPS showing it's coords with the BM work?

2--- What prevents anyone from saving up all their recoveries, THEN making their best hands and submit them during the last days of the contest? If they got every hand, they could submit and go for the next set, but that wouldn't prevent anyone from sandbagging. Could be part of the game I guess, plays into the "bluffing" aspect of poker.

Looks like a lot of fun, thanks for putting this together.

Thinking.....

1) It is easier to verify a disk and we are lazy so, therefore go for the easy way.

2) What if everyone else has logged their hands and we have them compiled on the data base and something happens to the scorekeeper that he cannot add anything else -- he is getting old you know....Yup, it is called a "Gamble".

What happens if something is not accepted - as in a picture is not accepted so therefore that hand is denied? Then they cannot get our blessing to go for the next set. Maybe 'Bluffing' is not the way to go in this contest. But, that is why they call it 'Gambling'.

After reading a couple times it seems way too complicated for my simple mind. But, a couple of questions to begin with.

1. Did I miss it or do you do the hands only in order?

2. Have you considered a bonus for ERR, as in last time, or is that just too complicated?

I'm really horrible at poker and not all that good at benchmarking. Anyone have a "Benchmark Poker for Dummies" manual? :)

1) You may do the hands in any order you want. That is actually where the strategy comes into play. You have to figure out what hand a find will be used towards.

2) There are already '3' bonuses. DNF, OLD, VERY OLD and then the special bonus of getting all hands and starting over again. We think another bonus would be to much - what does everyone else think?

At least no one will have to have a 'Poker Face' for this game.

Benchmark Poker for Dummies manual - now that is just too funny!

Guess you're probably right on the ERR bonus.

Another question. IF I logged a DNF in the last contest (less than a year, of course) and find it now, I can still use it as a "regular" find, is that correct?

For clarification - any benchmark that has the last log as a DNF is available for the bonus points. We will add to the rules that the DNF will need to have been logged prior to the posting of this thread.

So If you go find that DNF from the last contest then you will get the bonus points for it, IF you use it in one of the poker hands.

Good, that's more liberal than the last contest.

Will you not accept those new style ones that are tubes buried in the ground with the rod sticking up the middle and the number on the rim?

As long as it has an identification number on the rim - sure. It is almost a disk. It has a 'disk type lid'. :)

Most of those in my neighborhood are too new for inclusion on gc.com - unless the judges will accept PID & designation as per NGS data sheets, with verification by photo on USBenchmarks @ Waymarking.com?

We are going to stick with the simple way and if it is in GC database, then it is a find for a hand. With this contest, we will only accept the GC.com database.

oh good god! I read and re-read the point set up and i'm still scratching my head. Guess i gotta go learn a new game. I still think teaching kids about rocketry is a heck of a lot simpler. :tired:

Well, looking forward to seeing how poorly we're gonna do in this one. I can't play the game and I sure and hell can't bluff.

Katrina,

There is *always* LADY LUCK where no Old bluff is needed... Just find 'em and log 'em and (on paper) put a check mark beside which hand they might be used for...then when you have the best hand going...post it. No ProblemO. :D

Now, this is one type of series. Alphabet followed by a series number.

We seem to have series here in Jersey: A number, sequntial letters, and another number.

Example:

KV6888 2 A 1

LX7658 2 K 1

KV6818 2 Q 1

KV6815 2 J 1

KU5155 2 T 1

(Of course, I'm out of luck on that series, having found 2 K 1 recently.) Just wondering if this series qualifies?

Not sure if they qualify as 'lines' or not.

Looking at

KV1338 A 30

LY0773 K 30

LY0781 Q 30

LY0772 J 30

LY0754 T 30

Or are 'lines' Letter Three Digit Number?

The line number is the designation following the letters as in the example we gave. It may be a single digit or up to 4 digits in length. We have not seen any that were 5 or more digits. We have done several lines that were single digits as in W 5, X5, Y5 etc. A line is usually 26 benchmarks that are designated with the letters A to Z and the same number for all 26 benchmarks.

The example of the 2 A 1, 2 K 1, etc would all be 2's according to the rules. Quote "All are "Designation Only" using the "FIRST digit &/or line #" on the GC benchmark page." Unquote. The A 30 series would be good for the needed hand.

Hope this answers your questions.

276 B is actually where the hand "2 Pair" would come into play. You could use the 1st digit, the - *2* - and then get another - *2* - for half of the hand "2 Pair". Then get either another two of the same digits or two of the same letters to finish that hand off.

Your question was a good one.

Thank you t8r.

When we started thinking of a way to set the hands up for the ease of play in this contest...we at first, had included Numbers in the full house, also...then we realized that would have made a full house a cinch to find. A full house is supposed to be a little hard to come by, so we changed it to just Letters.

We feel, the tougher it is to get the better point hands - the more like real hands of poker it is.

This is a time to discuss the how and why we came up with our ideas and maybe be swayed into changing the rules. So, everyone, do not be afraid to speak up now, before the start of the sign-up for the game (August 1st), to let us know if there is anything that you have questions or concerns about or ideas on how to improve the game, either here or by PM or E-mail. We are usually prompt in answering.

Also remember, we set September 1st as the start of the contest running for 2 months.

You can log them on GC.com & the NGS. You can use the 1st digit of the designation where appropriate in a poker hand. We suggest that you concentrate on the X 419, X 420, & X 32 lines that are listed on the "nearest benchmarks" search page for 65 EMH.

For the straight flush "Straight Flush = 5 Consecutive Letters of the same line # (see example below)" find 5 of the 419 line (or the 420 line, or the 32 line) that are consecutive letters of the alphabet. For the royal find the "A", "K", "Q", "J", & "T" of the same line.

Flush clarification: we can mix line numbers from different states, right? (G 12 (OH), H 12(NY), J 12(WV), etc.) What about identical station names from different states? F 150(OH), F 150(PA), F 150(NY), etc. Any bonus there?

Having easy access to 5 states, I was curious about this.

For the Flush the line number will need to be from a single line in just 1 state. Having that many lines with the same designation should increase the odds of completing the Straight Flush and the Royal Flush as well as make it easier to get 4 of a Kind.

We hadn't even considered the possibility of identical lines close together so we didn't consider that as a bonus.

Hi fossillady,

If you found a benchmark sometime before July of 2006, then you post a note *With* a "New" picture (also - one view shot would be nice, as those keep me interested when I am checking the pictures, but not required). Doing it this, way we know someone went back to verify that the mark is still there and what condition it is in after at least a year has gone by.

5pts) Flush = 5 of the same line # from a single county, no mixing benchmarks from more than 1 line even if it is the same line number.

For the flush, they have to be from a single county, but not for the Straight Flush or Royal Flush? We have small counties in New Jersey. It's not unusual for a line to run trhough two or more counties.

If those RESETs have there own PIDs and are in the GC database as RESETs...Yes.

Here is what we have in mind for the extra prizes.

For the Silver Strike tokens we have decided that 1st through 3rd will get a token in addition to the belt buckle. Token number 4 will be given away in a drawing. The last token and the OLD OLD GPSr will be awarded to the last place finisher - defined as the person who scores the lowest score that is above ZERO. If several people have the lowest score (above zero) then the last person to have logged their find will get the last place prize, so even the loser wins! :)

We haven't decided how to award the binoculars (Pentax 8X21UCFR), so any suggestions will be appreciated.

So this would be a straight flush, it's OK without the "I 350"??

And like the dolphin, I also have found several examples of BM "lines" crossing county lines (Los Ageles & Orange in this case). I guess those county surveyor offices might actually talk to each other on occation....

I believe that there are only 24 marks in a run. The designators for O & I are typically not used.CallawayMT

John:

So to clarify your clarification:

A line of 5 marks that skips an "I" or "O" will still be OK as a straight flush?

Real example (nearby, have found several, but too recently for the contest, darn!).

For the Straight Flush, If the 'line' does not include the "I" or "O", meaning there is no PID# for it, then they can be discounted from the requirement. If we check the findings for a straight flush and the "I" or "O" is listed (has a PID#) then it will be required for the hand (If it is needed).

We have edited the rules to allow lines that cross the county line. If the hand requires several benchmarks from a line, then they must all be from the same line. Even if the line crosses the stateline (there is a line here that goes from AZ into UT) it will be allowed.

Just a clarification please. Would this count as 3 of a kind? All have seperate PID #.

R 579

R 579 RM 1

R 579 Rm 3

Since all 3 have their own PID#s It would count as 3of a kind or part of a full-house or part of 4 of a Kind (any designation that starts with an "R" is all that you need for the 4 of a kind.).

Just a heads up for everyone...

There are less than "2" weeks to sign-up in the "Time to Sign-Up for the Poker Fun Run" thread.

You must be signed up before the contest starts for a chance at any of the prizes. After that, you would just be in it for the stats only.

Everyone is invited to join in the fun.

Good Hunting.

Shirley~
