In Cache Page Pictures Gone

For the past couple days sometimes when I load a cache page the pictures in the description don't show up. I have to reload the page a couple of times to get them to show up.

I thought maybe it was just my browser until a fellow cacher on the St Louis mail list sent a response to another cacher that he couldn't see the puzzle on the cache

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...2a7b54a59&log=y

I also had this problem on this cache page so I thought it might be a website issue.

I am using Firefox 1.5 on WindowsXP.

I was working on a new cache page and noticed the same problem. It has several images used in a table. After getting all the images in and the code set up properly, I tried the cache page on several different browsers. It eventually worked on all five that I used, but sometimes I would get no indication that images were even on the page. I did not check the source code so I don't know if the problem was there or not. Sorry, I can't link the page, but the box is not even out in the woods yet and it won't be submitted for several days. If an admin wants to look the cache is GCRPDM.

I noticed the same sort of thing on the main Geocaching page... where an image is supposed to be there is nothing but a blank dark grey box. The two boxes that contain images of people out enjoying caching are void.

And not that I care... but the GEOTEAMING image is missing too

I am using Firefox.

But over my my in-laws house on IE6, everything is where it should be.

edit: Nope... it must be my computer... images missing on my IE too.

PS: This myst happens with Firefox and IE on WinXP - the Browser of my danger mobile fone and with the Browser of my Palm Lifedrive PDA, so i think - its not a client problem.

That's one mean looking Santa Claus on that page!

Kind of a drastic step to take over a temporary problem, isn't it?

Yes. Very drastic. The reason why some photos don't show up is because they are being hosted on the domain img.Groundspeak.com - many ad blocking software will filter it out because it incorrectly thinks that the images are banner ads.

No, that's not it. The HTML being served by Groundspeak is incorrect. You see, it isn't just the images, it is the table code surrounding the images that is gone.

I think this is more serious than you think. This breakage started a few days before Christmas.

I had thought it had to do with images contained in tables, since all of mine are that way, but after reading the other complaints, I'm not so certain. I'd suspect HTMLTidy if you changed some parameters on that right before Christmas, but otherwise, I have no idea. The HTML is being served incorrectly seemingly independent of operating system or browser.

For someone experiencing this issue I will need to know the browser you are using. There's nothing browser specific on the page that would be causing this (that I know of), and all images are rendering fine in my browser.

Yep, here's another one:cache page should have the coded text as an image in the middle of the page. It's useless without it.

Pic works for me. As does the Santa pic for the other cache.

Jamie

It didn't work for me. I looked at the HTML source and there wasn't any IMG tag, so if there was supposed to be, something is stripping it out.

I tried this link with both Firefox 1.0 and IE 6.0 with the same results.

I forgot....the same problem exists by some HTML Tags.

font size = problems

font style = no problem

And this is not a Browser Problem. A lot of German users have some diffrent browsers, but all have the same problem.

I think you can't see the error, because this is a temporarily problem. 1 Minute without problems, and 1 Minute with.

I see this problem first in the night from 21./22. at 01.30 German Time.

I'm not sure it is a browser specific problem, but I was setting up my page using Netscape. I copied the URL into MSIE, Safari, Opera, and Firefox. The first time I tried Safari, I didn't have any images. I tried later from the GC.com search page and had the images show up. Later I tried to pull up the page in Netscape and there were no images. I only tried it once in the other browsers and it worked fine when I tried it. I did them all one right after the other by cutting and pasting the URL.

The problem is that the condition is intermittent. Sometimes the pics show up just fine and sometimes they don't. I don't see it often, but it does happen. The problem in tracking it down is the seemingly random nature of it.

I still think it is a software issue. It is certainly possible that some upgrade is now stripping the actual html from pages that have images linked on other web sites. Do you see the banner ads?

What cache page are you looking at? I'm looking at this cache and I see no img tag in the source of the long description. Is there one for you? Here is the long description HTML I see.

<span id="LongDescription">“North?” she questioned, not really listening as she carried on
pinning her faded, and slightly grey smalls to the already full
washing line. Ethel was talking to her next-door neighbour Maude,
over the rotting, but-I’ll-paint-it-anyway garden fence. It was a
lovely summer’s day and Ethel was making the most of it. “Yes!”
said Maude irritated now, “it’s the only direction you can go, when
you’re at the south pole”.<br>
<br>
Maude’s son, Ferdinand, was on a polar expedition. 30 years old, or
so Maude liked to think, and still not sure just exactly what he
wanted out of life. Other than to be stuck at the south pole.<br>
<br>
“When is he coming home?”, enquired Ethel. “That”, said Maude
matter of factly, “I’m not sure of, you see, he uses this satellite
thingy or some such device which turns what he says into a
tele-message”.<br>
“A tele what?”, said Ethel flatly.<br>
“A tele-message”, replied Maude, almost shouting now. <br>
“Here, I’ll go and get it. See if you can make anything from it.
It’s all double Dutch to me”.<br>
<br>

And with that she disappeared into the house, returning a few
minutes later with a piece of paper……<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
<br>
Initially, they had exchanged muddled ideas. She shrugged,
insisting, "Neither gold nor old silver are reward enough to help,
Ethel". Neither of our feeble ladies eventually thought to exercise
reason.<br>
Surely initially now there’s hope enough. Would others realise?
<br>
Dear old Ferdinand travelled, ensuring xmas tidings survived. How
others would not believe? You too have enough presence of spirit.
In the ice of north or further toward home, everyone loves England.
<br>
To test everyone’s readiness, only now the hidden event kept
everyone yearning. But, oh, a real dilemma.<br>

Hmm, that is very odd. I haven't changed browsers in a long time, and I am seeing other images on the page, including the banner ads.

Hey, on one of my refresh tests, it started working. Very strange.

We can't read your mind. I see a xmas tree. Is there something else missing?

The problem is:

one minute you can see the image (and if used, tables) - one minute later, image/table is unvisible.

Go to the url above and do folowing:

if you see the picture, then press F5 in your browser everey 10 Seconds to refresh the site ...

... and sooner or later you'll see the disaster ...

Same problem here since last friday I think. Tested with IE 6.0 and Firefox 1.0.7 and many caches. In The Netherlands many users noticed the same problem with cachepages on the geocaching.com site, also with different browsers and PPC's. We're having 13 caches and (sorry to say this) not willing to change the HTML code again (if that's the problem). Last summer we also changed all the caches because of the <p>, </p> and <br> tags. When should we change all of this again? Next summer?

Any questions?

How come you insist on using those silly icons at the bottom of your cache page, which are not searchable, instead of cache attributes, which are searchable? :o

I noticed that too, especially since some of the icons looked just like the official, searchable cache attribute icons. Then I saw that the rollover text was in German. That would be a logical explanation. I am guessing that the German users of those icons find it more useful to have icon descriptions in their native language than it is to have attributes that are searchable through pocket queries. In this regard I note the many threads from European geocachers which lament how difficult it is for them to obtain premium membership subscriptions.

Back on topic, I don't doubt that there is wonky behavior with the tables and images, as reported. I have refreshed the sample cache page about 20 times in between phone calls and e-mails at work this afternoon, and have been unable to duplicate it. That is an evil little bug. I stop short of calling it a "disaster" or seeing it as something worth archiving a good cache over. The problem seems to have arisen shortly before the recent holiday, and now Groundspeak's back at work. I am sure they will look at this along with the many other bugs that seem to pop up when new code is added to the site.

What I also noticed is the following:

- If you go directly to a cachepage the problem was never seen!

- If you go to a cachepage via a forum link or through a found-it mail received from geocaching.com on one of your own caches, the image problem occured!

Hopefully this will help to solve the actual html-problem :o

And my other caches have also the GC icons. But i placed from 1.-24. December everyday a new cache, must work, eat, sleep, buy presents, go to some birthdays,..........and when i find some free seconds, i use also the cache-attributs.

But if you plan to come earlier, mail me, then i make it faster :o

I have Firefox 1.0.7 and it works just fine. So does IE.

I experienced the problem with IE yesterday. I don't have an ad- or popup-blocker installed.

When I looked at this cache I noticed all the images in the cache description were gone and the formatting of the text seemed to have basically gone.

I looked into the HTML source code and noticed that most of the HTML tags were missing:

<strong>, <ul>, <li>, <img> and all tags belonging to the table.

So what was left was basically plain text with the exception of the <font> tag that marks a part of the text in red and the <p> tags.

Unfortunalety I did not make a copy of the source code but I will if it happens again.

The parts of the page that do not belong to the cache description looked quite normal to me, but I don't believe I would have noticed a missing ad :o

I reloaded the cache page several times with the same result.

About 15 minutes later i reloaded the cache description again and everything looked fine.

OK, that's in fact a direct link via geocaching.com. In this case I don't see the image problem. Via this link the problem should accure:

Maybe not always!

Edit: tested several times, but now it's OK, how funny :o

Aha! It's all in how you get there! For the last couple of weeks, I've been having this exact same issue with the table displayed on this page. When I get to it by selecting the URL from the history list, it's always broken (and hitting refresh doesn't fix it). I've been fixing it by clicking "edit listing" but making no actual changes; after submitting the unchanged cache listing, it is right again.

After reading your post, I tried getting there from the gc main page / my account / geocaches (mine) link, and the table was fine. In another window, I got there the usual way, and the table was broken.

I don't see this as always being true.

I always visit my caches based on bookmarks in my list of saved bookmarks (Safari on a Macintosh).

Something the tables/images are there, sometimes they are not.
