Wow This Is Cool

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if it's the same one (I'm relunctant to download the dingus to this machine), but I think that's one we were playing with at work a while back. And, yes, it's VERY cool.

I don't think they have access to anything others don't, but there interface was such that you grabbed terrain with your "hand" and yanked it toward you. There was a little momentum to it, so you'd go past the point a little and then swing back, which made me feel slightly motion sick.

But it's a very godlike experience.

Very cool indeed. This will help you pinpoint the coordinate location of the geocache. I find zooming it down to about the 800' level of altitude is about the best zoomed in resolution you can get. That'll be about 2 meters resolution by my rough calculation of a recent geocache I found this weekend.

The 3-D features are very cool and can help even further. The controls are very easy to use.

I wonder if EraSeek would be pleased to know the location of his Ebey Bluffs was easily visible this way?

I just may pay for this when I can afford the $30.

I just installed the trial version of this and its pretty neat... not worth $30 IMHO. Not enough detail in the rural areas for me. I enjoy getting out in the woods where theres more trees than people.

You can get much better results with TerraClient or USAPhotomaps and both of those are free :-)

Which of those two do you like better MR? The USAPhotoMaps or the Terra Client?

I'm looking for something that has aerial maps where I can drop in wpts when designing multi caches. Is there something online that I could use?

Interesting, I just tried TerraClient for the first time. I have used USAPhotoMaps many times. The TerraClient program seems a little limited in that I don't see the option of loading waypoints and tracks from the GPS, but I did notice that the aerials are more up to date. On USAPhotoMaps, my neighborhood that is about 6 years old does not show, but on TerraClient, it does show. I thought that both programs used the same data, but apparently not.

Globalgirl, thats an interesting question. Both programs offer something a little different for the users. I think for GPS usage, the USAPhotoMaps is hard to beat. TerraClient only allows you to enter in coordinates, no waypoint, tracks or other handheld provided info.

USAPhotoMaps allows waypoint transfer etc. My only complaint with it though is if you are on a less than broadband connection, you have my sympathies :-). The ability to overlay USGS maps on top of the photos is the clincher for me. Thats just too convenient and too cool. TerraClient is nice if you want just a quick photo overview of an area. I use that more for exploring an area I might want to travel to more than anything else. Play with them both and see what you like. They're small programs and seem to both be well written.

...Lostoutdoors.com doesn't access it, but Marky's Terra Server Viewer can.

Woa Markwell, that Terraserver Viewer is just the ticket! Just what I was looking for - dropped 3 wpts for my next multi cache into it, punched printscreen and voila - a map of the cache route!

Question izzzz... MR - not sure I understand what all having the software you mention would do [better/more]?

Better/More is always a good thing. I love to have options. In some cases one does something that the other doesnt. Also, I do a lot of exploring on the roads less traveled and I pursue Texas ghost towns as a hobby so from my perspective, the more maps and map resources the better.

Hi all,

Marky's Terra Server Viewer has apparenlty shut down. Can anyone recommend another good, interactive, online (i.e., don't have to download a program) map viewer with similar capabilities, specifically to plot multiple way points on satellite maps?

cheers
