CT Trampers
Is it cool to take a FTF prize from a cache placed for a specific event cache BEFORE the event? Personally, I wouldn't do it, but have noticed others who have. Is this cool or not? I vote not, FWIW. Edited July 16, 2004 by CT Trampers Quote Link to comment

CT Trampers
Isn't it odd to have coordinates for an event cache cache, before the event? yes it is. [] Apologies for not being specific enough. I'm talking about caches that have been placed and approved before the actual event date. Quote Link to comment
Renegade Knight
That changes it quite a bit. If the cache is very clear it's place for an event and so forth, then you shouldn't, but you can't exercise any real control over it other than to provide the coords at the event itself and then list it later. Look at how many cachers just upload a bunch of waypoints and hunt blind. They will get home wiht their cool FTF prize and then read the cache page... Quote Link to comment
fly46
Personally, I think if you're doing permanent caches, starting at an event, you shouldn't place them before the day of the event. Quote Link to comment

IV_Warrior
Personally, I think if you're doing permanent caches, starting at an event, you shouldn't place them before the day of the event. Or talk with your friendly local approver, they might be willing to 'hold' them, and officially list them the day of the event. That way, you can still work through the approval process before the event, so you know if the cache will be approved, or if you need to "work at it" to get it approved. Quote Link to comment
Mudfrog
OK, im a little confused. Is this a physical cache container that is hidden but not supposed to be looked for before a certain time? Ive seen "get together" caches that were listed with bogus coordinates and you didnt get the right ones until you made it to the general area along with everyone else. Either that or the cache itself doesnt get put out until the morning of the event date. This latter can still be "cheated" if someone comes out early, finds where the cache will be hidden, and draws out their route to get ahead of everyone else. Unfortunately there will be people who knowingly jump the gun and cheat to be FTF! YES, it is cheating in this case!!! Quote Link to comment
Seamus
For an event-based cache, you might try listing it initially with the coordinates of the spot where people will be meeting for the event, and give the actual coords in the reviewer's notes section of the submission form. That way, anyone who goes after it will find a big crowd of people there waiting for the event, rather than the box with an FTF prize. Once the event starts, announce the actual coords to those in attendance so they can go find it. After the event actually happens, modify the cache listing to reflect the actual coordinates. kayaker22589
I think you should be able to. Usually when we have an event cache there are about 4 caches put up. You can go with the group or by yourself. Of course FTF prizes aren't usually available or are something small like geocoins. Quote Link to comment
JohnnyVegas
if the cache is new and for the event you can request the approver not to post it until the date of the event, or just get it approved then you can deactivate your self and reactivate in the day of the cache. Quote Link to comment
wimseyguy
The normal MO around here is to post the cache page with bogus coords ( just 000 for the last part N/W) and give them out at the event. If it's an afternoon event then the hiders might update the cache pages the night before or that morning for anyone who wants to meet up and hunt before the actual event. Makes the approvers life a little easier and allows the cache owner to maintain the control they desire over the release date/time of the cache that's hidden for an event. Quote Link to comment

Its just as easy to ask us to hold the cache till the day of the event. I always change the name of the cache to HOLD DATE ORIGINAL Name. Then I leave it in the queue. this way if I miss it one of the other reviewers might catch the new name and look at it on that day. They are already pre-approved we just have to change the name back and hit the button. Thats howits done out in my neck of the woods. What ever works for the approver is whats best Quote Link to comment
briansnat
Once the cache is out there and the coords are listed, its fair game. If there is a special prize inside tied into an event, it probably should be labelled as such. If it was, then taking it would be cheesy, but I don't think I'd hunt the guy down and slash his tires.
