Moun10Bike Posted March 1, 2004 Share Posted March 1, 2004 Travis, I spoke to multiple Vancouverites (Vancouverines?) up in Bellingham on Saturday who said that there was no way we will want to have the dinner at that Red Robin. It is a downtown location with limited parking, and you have to pay for what parking is available. I heard several people mention that people will end up driving around for an hour of frustration looking for a parking spot. Should we move the dinner to a different Red Robin? Quote Link to comment

A BC cacher just e-mailed me that the Thurlow location is just as bad, particularly since the Canucks are playing a home game that night, bringing like 30,000 people into town. There's two more in range, and I need to figure out what hotel most people are starting at, so a complete re-route is in order. For now, I'm thinking about starting at "Vancouver Decachelon - Foot Race" and ending near the 4640 Kingsway, Burnaby Red Robin. I've fired off an e-mail to Burnaby parks to find out if we can get in there so early. Quote Link to comment
+travisl Posted March 7, 2004 Author Share Posted March 7, 2004 I've just made reservations at the Ramada Inn - Metrotown ($46.16 a night on Expedia.com). It's only 1.4 miles from the Metrotown Red Robin at the end of the route. I'll be changing the start point to the Ramada parking lot, which will change the route slighly, but not much. Other inexpensive hotels in that area are the Days Inn Vancouver-Metro ($51.12 on Travelocity.com) or the Best Western Kings Inn ($52.11, Expedia). I'll have an updated route posted tonight. I will be driving up there myself. BUT when it comes to the caching I might just like to hop a ride with someone do the actual caching with! BTW. Where is everyone staying? I had made reservations at the Best Western Sands (the one that you had mentioned earlier in the thread), but after my wife backed out of going I picked the more conveniently located hotel. Because of her job and security clearance, my wife needs to inform (meaning get unofficial approval) security people at her work to travel to a foreign country (which includes America, Jr.). I think (hope?) it was on my desk. Meaning that it's certainly intact, although it may smell like a campfire. I was nauseated at how my network cables, headphones, and phone cord became permeated with the fire smell after being stored in the smokehouse for six months. My nightstand is on the back porch, although you couldn't tell it apart from my bed or dresser any more -- charred wood looks all the same. I think I saw some toadstools growing out of it. Feel free to stop by and dig through the debris pile for a geocoin, though. I don't think it's there, but the remains of a paper cup of spare change is somewhere in there. Of course, the neighbors will think it's suspicous and call the cops, but I'm sure you can think of an excuse. Bringing this back on topic, I see from the Ramada Metrotown web site that there's free ADSL internet in each room. Sweet. Saturday night's gonna be even longer. I'll be bringing my stinky network cable. Apologies in advance to my roommate. (Edit: just talked to the hotel. The DSL is only in the suites, which are $20 more per night than the regular rooms. Never mind.) And nothing against you, Gaviidae, but I'd prefer to share a room with these four! That's quite the home page. I thnk you'll find that the hotel is on the scuzziest section of Granville street and is surrounded by porno shops, drug dealers and panhandlers. A major hooker stroll is one block to the east. The streets themselves are fairly safe, even at night, but avoid the alley's after dark. Go a few blocks north or west and the neighbourhood improves greatly, though. The hotel itself is quite nice. Instead of the four women in the downtown Ramada's photo, we shared the floor with the Cal-Berkely women's rugby team. Unfortunately, I couldn't come up with a good snappy comeback when one of them pointed out that I was the only guy in a elevator packed with eight stinky girls. No complaints from me!
