That Iron Mountain Challenge has to be a demon. With the few waypoints I have under my feet I can appreciate your effort to some extent. Your report of seventeen miles surprised me as I thought it was a mere eleven miles all-told. At this point it seems to me that rearranging the order of waypoints is not a good idea. Now that there are two successful challengers all others should follow in their tracks and, of course, endure the same pain. I stick with my story that I am not a contender in any way. Maybe I can get it done on a second day but for there to be winners there must be non-winners and so I intend to plod along as an observer that's in it for the exercise, the experience, and the delightful Iron Mountain trail system. +oceanhugger
I'm fairly new to geocaching but am beyond hopelessly addicted. I noticed that a trail behind my house is next to barren of geocaches and I've been working on camo'ing 15-20 cache containers for a two mile trail loop. I was wondering if anybody knows how well does Gaff tape hold up for camo. I noticed that Ritz Crackers uses some kind of green/brown textured paint for some of his bikeNcache series and I was wondering if anybody knows what he uses? Also, if some of the caches are handicap accessible but the overall trail is only foot and bike friendly, should I rate it based on the length of the entire trail (2.5ish) or individually based on if some of the caches have nearby parking? It's a trail loop smack dab in the middle of the 56 and I hope to publish it before mothers day, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Quote Link to comment

Wow! a newbie with twenty containers ready to hide, are you realted to Jodi of Jahoadi and John by any chance? You will attract a following with that sort of activity. Gaffers tape and duct tape hold up well in the wild. Of course duct tape with a cammo-pattern is usual for Geocach hides. For truly remote trails make sure to either hang the containers or place them under some hand-sized rocks because coyote packs are sure to sniff them out and chew the container unless well placed. Handicap-accessible hides are an interesting subject. My sweet bride and I introduced one of her brothers, Bob, to Geocaching in Ashland, Oregon. We went for six or seven handicap-accesssible hides none of which could be reached by Bob from his wheelchair. He did enjoy the day with us but felt that Geocaching was not for him. He owns a ramped and hand-controlled van that enables him to use handicap-accessible docks provided by Oregon for lake fishing. There's a pretty good rating guide on Geocaching.com. Terrain: Mostly about how steep and how far to a hide and whether bouldering or bushwhacking is involved. Difficulty: Mostly about accuracy of coordinates and for remote trails no-nonsense hints. Geocachers that specialize in rugged trails don't think much of hides that take a lot of time to find or lie too far off-trail. Rugged-trail hints should be very helpful to a finder. Note that a Difficulty-5 means that special equipment is needed. Speaking for myself of course, Harmon SD Rowdies Edited May 2, 2011 by SD Rowdies Quote Link to comment
+SD Rowdies
Rats! from what I can deduce from BBC News and Google Earth about the compound where Ben Laden was taken down and out, there's no Geocache hides at all within twenty miles of the site in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Too bad, I was hoping to plan an event there as a follow-up to FlagMan's M*A*S*H shindig. From what I can surmise from a description and a couple of small photos posted on BBC News, I make my guess that the fenced property located at N34 10.161, E73 14.552 is the point of interest. No Google-Earth street view in Abbottabad, darn it so take a look and make your own assessment. Actually east of Santee Lakes within the open area bounded by Carlton Oaks Blvd., Lake Canyon Rd., and Halberns Blvd. Nearest hides are GC224A5 multi' and my GC222WW "Jodi Come Back" hide; neither threatened it seems. Favorable wind direction and good response put it down even though it reached residential fences, making it under two property fences with little damage. +oceanhugger
Rats! from what I can deduce from BBC News and Google Earth about the compound where bin Laden was taken down and out, there's no Geocache hides at all within twenty miles of the site in Abbottabad, Pakistan. How interesting it is that the compound is located within spitting distance from Pakistan's Military training center. Harmon SD Rowdies Hmm, maybe Janie and Jodi would head over as an advanced party to place hides here and there to lend support to a Pakistani Geocaching Event. If the SEALs were still there maybe...... Can't resist a uniform, huh Jodi? Maybe we could wear a Burka.........or one of those white Hazzmat suits we had for the Glowstick Smackdown. Surely , we could go unoticed and start a power trail.........maybe the ET Highway...Pakistan version. You know how cachers are, they go anywhere!! Splashette W-e-l-l ... you've got the GZ (pardon the expression) coordinates. On the other hand I have the impression that cornsilk blondes are reather uncommon in Pakistan. ... come t' think of it, cornsilk blondes are rather uncommon in the redneck tri-cities as well. I can see it now ... "Does this burka make my butt look big?" Kiss-kiss, Harmon Harmon, where do you get the 'cornsilk' stuff.............you always told me my hair looked like a haystack! Janie:anitongue: New cache attributes: IEDs Dear DTBMMBLB, Did I ever mention to you that DTCMMBLB was and still is my favorite moment of Geocaching? That moment was so full of joy and laughter that I know for certain that you secretly share my delight that it was photographed. How wonderful it is that DTCMMBLB has become so admired that other vine-ripened ladies have reenacted the incident ... not to name any names of course. Hmm, that reminds me ... let me know what Jodi thinks of the Burka Boogie. On another topic, haystack was always after you stuck your lovely head into a Sumac bush while looking for a Bison tube. Cornsilk was when beeth thtuck their bodieth into your hair 'cauthe they couldn't rethitht. OceanHugger, You bring up a good point about Geocaching in Pakistan. Fortunately I have the answer for avoiding IEDs ... same as avoiding snakes. Always hike with a partner and do make sure that your partner is ahead of you when on the trail or when bushwhacking or bouldering. That way you'll be able to run for help if your partner has an encounter. No charge, Harmon SD Rowdies Edited May 4, 2011 by SD Rowdies Quote Link to comment

Yes dear, whatever you say dear. I'll never, uhm, ... never do it, uhm, ... again. Trudging up slippery-steep slopes you say? Another Harmon-trail for me to shed blood on huh? Can't wait; in fact, bought myself a new stock of super-padded hiking socks to replace the one's I've shredded by hiking existing Harmon-trails. Hmm, "... pester vine-ripened thick-skinned elder San Diego Geocaching Gals ..." anybody I know? Sweet ol' Harmon Quote Link to comment
