Champoeg Rendezvous Date (Oregon) :)

Recommended Posts

Maps-R-Us & Skooter would like to sponsor a spring Rendezvous at Champoeg State Park on the Willamette river south of Portland.

Spend part of a Saturday with geocachers at one of the most historic parks in Oregon. We will have a reserved covered area to eat at. There are several reasons to come:

  • Work on a park improvement project clearing English Ivy.

  • Build "Child of Rendezvous" caches as a part of the event, and to send home with the cacher traveling the farthest.

  • Learn what may have happened to Oregone's girlfriend Jenny.

  • Eat a potluck lunch with other geocachers.

Schedule:

10:00 - 12:00 Ivy clearing project organized with the park staff. Coordinates will

be posted. Gloves, long sleeves, and closed toe shoes required.

12:00 - 1:00 Potluck lunch, at covered eating area, barbeque pits available

1:00 - ? Oregon History Lesson, followed by Oregone's history lesson.

Divide into two teams to place "Child of Rendezvous" caches, trade coordinates & find the other teams' cache.

Help needed:

  • Ivy crew coordinator.

  • Food coordinator.

  • Photographer to document the project.

  • *Child of Rendezvous* team co-captains, requires a visit to the park before to scope out cache sites.

Do you mean Jenny Donnelly, Jenny Davitt, or Jenny Siebenaler?

Count me in no matter what date is chosen. You can also put me down for whatever job is the least desirable: This sounds like fun and i'll do whatever i can to help. I like how we're clearing ivy on the cache date. Nice.

This meeting is especially tantalizing to me because about the time Bob Newell was setting up the post office there in Newellsville, my great-great-grandfather was just settling into his farm about eight miles upstream. 151 years later, we're still there.

And then there's the countless times that my friends and i snuck into the park afterhours to "bump kitty." And the time when a whiny little seventeen-year-old oregone had a little heart-to-heart with the willamette about the fickleness of woman. And the magical evening that involved a Posies CD and a flying 1995 Ford Escort GT full of homophobic frat guys. And, of course, the womens' shower near the campgrounds and a Canby high-school senior named "Veronica."

i LOVE this park.

Money, volunteer hours, kegs of Deschutes Mirror Pond IPA, whatever it takes--I want to do my part to make this the best one ever.

Y'all (skooter & maps-r-us), feel free to email me for anything you need.

Oregone's enthusiasm's going to make me bust a button! I voted for April, but any of the three will work. April's just soonest! Count me in for taking pix, but I also want to whack some ivy and want to chat, so don't want to be the "official" photographer.

April... too soon...

May 18th.. Very historic day... Even though I was only 5 at the time, I still remember the ash.

June 1st.. Right around Rose Festival time... It usually rains around RF.. May might be better...

I can do May or June.. I'll see if this thing let's me vote twice icon_smile.gif

This is the park my friends got married to the sound of the "Emperors March", and on top of the wedding cake had Han Solo and Princess Leah figurines instead of the traditional Man/Wife. An absolute riot. Definitly count me in on either May or June (leaning toward June).

There definitely IS camping available for those that want to stay the night. I remember them having sixty-some campsites. I want to say it's $14 a night, but i can't be sure. They even have group sites, and a couple years ago they installed five or six yurts--ever so popular.

Does anyone know if champoeg is on the reservation system? I don't think it is, but the info # is 1800-551-6949.

Also, i bet that OR Dept of Tourism has some info.

Wouldnt it be cool to camp and do a night time Snipe type cache hunt similar to

After Dark

We could have Smoor Travel bugs (could get messy) during this Snipe cache hunt. I would be willing to create the container if somebody would help with the hunt... Maybe have 2 teams since this place is so huge and fun. Just a thought.

Any more?

My thought was that we would split into two teams, that would each build & place a cache. We would then get back together, trade coordinates & then find the other team's cache.

It would be really cool if someone brought a wireless connection so we could post the caches from the park.

It looks like May or June, vote for your choice if you haven't.

as a good friend of mine (oregone) always says "any party that has a Jenny at it, is a good party. I only go to parties if there is a Jenny."

So count me in, if it is June 1. Boy, am i looking forward to the month of June. I'll also be happy to bring anything, iced tea, beer, garbage bags, etc.

Thanks for the great idea!

Has anyone reserved a group camping spot yet?? M.G. has pointed out that the spaces are filling up. It would suck to have to camp in the parking lot, since setting up the tents would be difficult in between cars.

If there is a Jenny there, I am there.

Thank you to the people that took the poll. June 1st looks like our preference. I have spoken with the Park Ranger & he says that there will be lots of activities in the park that day, but our ivy removal would be fine. (He calls us the "GPS Group" ) There will be free admission for day use that day (save $3) and the park museums will be open & free. Go to: Champoeg web page for more info.

CAMPING:

Option 1: There is a group tent site that is close to the river if people wanted to reserve it. The site is not as developed as an RV site but would be away from the other campers. (I think the location is about 45°15.3396' -122°53.2690). The cost is $60 for the first 6 cars & then $7/car after that.

Option 2: Reserve the RV group site which is $80 up front & then $8/car after first 10 cars.

Option 3: Reserve individual sites, yurts or cabins.

Any volunteers to make the reservations?

MRU & I will be posting an event cache soon where will ask for people to give us an approximate count.

Thanks again & hope to see lots of you June 1st.

Ok.. Looks like I have Yurt D reserved for Saturday night, June 1st. I think it was the last one available...

It supposedly sleeps 5, so if a few of you wanna crash at my Yurt for the night, you're more than welcome icon_smile.gif Just bring a sleeping bag and pay the $7 extra car fee...

I think that's the way to do it. You know, on an individual basis. Just seems less of a hassle.

I don't know if i'm camping there that night, but i guess i better figure it out soon as the sites are going fast! Maybe i can find a Jenny or two to show up.

If you decided to do a group thing my question would be can I set up my 'tent' trailer in the tent only site? If not we'd want a RV site.

But if everyone just got individual sites we can gather around Yurt D and keep Fractal up all night. icon_biggrin.gif

We just made our reservations. Amazing thing, we ended up almost directly in front of Fractal's yurt. Hmmmm, imagine that.

Wander Lost has volunteered her services as baby sitter for anyone with small children that wont be able to help with the clean-up. Besides, I can't get her do yard work around the house, much less convince her to drive to Oregon and do yard work there.

My pregnant wife(who will at 7 months by then)has volunteered to help with the kids also. She was whining about helping pull ivy and she's only 5 months now imagine in 2 more months. icon_eek.gif

We have also booked an individual site for the weekend. Doing the group camp is a bigger investment and hassle. We want folks to come and help participate to make this a real group event but we don't want anyone to feel obligated to pay too much money. When the cache page gets approved we'll go into more details for volunteers! All of you who have volunteered so far, thanks and we will take you all up on your offers. Keep thinking of ideas to make this a great event! Kid games? Prizes? Cache themes?

I just ordered 10 pairs of canvas/leather work gloves and a gross of medium-duty trash bags for anyone on ivy removal squad. I also have 2 cases of portland brewing company "lemon lager," 1 case of "bobby dazzler," and 3 cases of "saxer summer" for the event.

Geez, it's over a month-and-a-half away and I'm already planning. That's a first.

I have some firewood I will supply. Are campfires allowed? Hope so since camping just isnt camping without a good campfire. Bobby Dazzeler is a great beer. Looking forward to liberating a bottle from Oregone. icon_biggrin.gif This event is looking to be very very fun! I cant wait.
