+Mr.Mike73
I am planning a trip to Las Vegas Nevada. to knock out the ET HighWay Power Trail. I am thinking starting around July 4th. are there any cachers out there that would want to team up and do some speed caching? can be done in 3 days from what i hear. but that is SPEED CACHING. so probably looking at 4 days. there is a lot to plan 2 + cars would be best and safer. +captnemo
Mojave desert in mid July sort of like New Jersey in mid Feb. Bring lots of water! Quote Link to comment
vagabond
This is the perfect time for desert caching, summer it's just to hot. I did part of the heart of the Mojave desert a week ago and it was a perfect 70 degrees Quote Link to comment
+Mr.Mike73
How many would be game for March I might be able to work some magic at work? Quote Link to comment
+Savoy
I'm planning a run at this during Spring break here in the South... thats the March 21-28 timeframe. Quote Link to comment
+jellis
I would be game if the date was January 30th 2016 Sometimes in the winter you still have snow and black ice. Yes Snow. That was one of the reasons it got shut down because of a vehicle and a snow plow. April or May is good. Quote Link to comment

I've driven the ET highway many times in the winter...some might call that snow, I call it a little bit of white stuff on the ground. I guess if you aren't used to winter driving, then be careful. I have driven the entire Alaskan highway a couple of times in the winter, that was real snow and ice Quote Link to comment
+uccacher
We did it in mid April 2011 and ran into about 8" of snow around 5,700' elevation (0838-E.T.). We only did a couple more before heading into California and lower elevation. Living in an area that averages over 100" of snow each year, the driving didn't bother us but trying to find a pile of rocks with that much snow was nearly impossible. If we return to finish it, I'll definitely wait until at least mid-May. Quote Link to comment
vagabond
We did the first 300 in early October 2010 and the weather was in the 70's Quote Link to comment
+NeverSummer
We did the first 300 in early October 2010 and the weather was in the 70's now that sounds WONDERFUL! If I would go, I would avoid summertime at all costs. I'm too used to being in Alaska for our version of summer (temps no higher than the mid-70s, usually) Quote Link to comment
+Savoy
Great tips!! I'll need to keep an eye on the weather and be willing to adjust based on what's happening on the ground that week. I'm a Montana guy living in Arkansas so I understand that its both my driving and those around me that 'keep us all safe.' I'm hoping for a dry but cool run at this thing! if not now, sometime before high summer. Quote Link to comment

+wimseyguy
We did the trail in late June 2012. It was 108 in the shade in Las Vegas the day before we drove up there. I don't care if it's a dry heat, it's still a lot of heat. But once we gained some elevation the temps dropped to a comfortable high 80's. We did encounter high winds which made the dust blow like crazy in the more open areas, but the heat wasn't an issue. And caching at night was an amazing experience. I had no idea just how much light pollution affected my view of the skies on the east coast. Rule #1. Bring PLENTY of water. Rule #2. Carry an extra 5 gallons of gas. When you need to use it, it's time to drive to the nearest town and fill up your car and spare can without stopping for more caches. Quote Link to comment
+humboldt flier
Hmmmmmmmmm, Once upon a time on the Original Trail the weather "turned on us". 117º and had to run the big block Chevy truck with THE HEATER ON to keep from frying the engine. Quote Link to comment
+Alkhalikoi
I was out there this past April on a caching trip to get all 17 Nevada Counties. We ended up doing the first 25 caches, which was kind of fun. I admire those folks who do the whole thing, but the three of us were (a) en route to Vegas and ( laughing too hard to any more. We weren't swapping cache containers but our Door Closed-to-Door Closed time between caches seemed to be about 1m 5s -- that's 40 hours do to it all that absurd pace. But Nevada desert country is lovely. I hope you enjoy it. Quote Link to comment
