  1. We did it in mid April 2011 and ran into about 8" of snow around 5,700' elevation (0838-E.T.). We only did a couple more before heading into California and lower elevation. Living in an area that averages over 100" of snow each year, the driving didn't bother us but trying to find a pile of rocks with that much snow was nearly impossible. If we return to finish it, I'll definitely wait until at least mid-May.
  2. That was probably Roy's in Amboy which is about halfway through the route. We stayed at the motel in Ludlow but the pointy roof was probably Roy's. I just looked it up...it was the Ludlow Cafe., I think it has a cache in front of it on some miming equip. Yes, I've got that mining equipment cache in my bookmark. I remember the Ludlow Cafe building now that I've seen the photo. We've driven by it several times over the past 25 years but never stopped in. Maybe I'll stop by this time for a breakfast. Roy's has a different kind of pointy roof - very early 60s-ish. I stand corrected and we even ate breakfast at the Ludlow Cafe. I guess I don't remember the roof but do remember the mining equipment, the cache, the elderly waitress, the excellent French toast, and the E Clampus Vitus Historical Markers Waymark dedicated to Project Plowshare that I posted.
  3. Soon as I post something, doesn't matter what, there's a bunch of people that want to disagree with me. Route 66 was my favorite PT I did, Amboy crater is a very cool spot. I have travelled over a lot of Route 66 and good chunks more will be lost. I hope the fix the damage rather than decommission this section. Very well said Roman. This was my first and also my favorite power trail. The crater was awesome and the abandoned buildings and towns were a piece of history that very few people get to see.

  5. What happened to the original topic about the road being closed? A group of us from Pennsylvania did the Route 66 trail a little over three and a half years ago. We did it over two days and had a great time. It was only a couple of months old at the time and as I recall all of the containers were in place and in good shape. Hopefully the road will be reopened since there were a lot of sites to see along the way. We especially enjoyed our stop in Amboy.
  6. I bought a 64s a month or so ago and have been pretty happy with it although as a DeLorme user since 2007, it's a bit of a learning curve.. Rather than purchasing the maps from Garmin, I downloaded maps from a freeware map site. I haven't tried street routing with those maps since I use a Nuvi for that but have pleasantly surprised with the detail They are installed on a 32GB micro SD card.
  7. It couldn't have worked out better for us. It's only about 5 hours from home and for several years we've spent Memorial Day weekend in the area so that we can attend the events in Sharpsburg, MD, home of the Antietam Battlefield and National Cemetery. We probably won't spend much time at Geowoodstock because of this. There are some awesome caches nearby that were placed by wvtim. I appreciate the fact that the committee contacted kcepenn since in my personal opinion, Geowoodstock IX was the best Mega I've ever attended. Of course I'm partial since it was only about 20 minutes from where we live and I was able to work with him and the other volunteers in the week leading up to the event.
  8. SherpaRon's All-Star Day Challenge. This may be my favorite challenge cache to date. Not too difficult but fun The "Lost Challenge" Which wouldn't be allowed under the new "remove the fun from caching" rules because heaven forbid someone should have to limit their number of finds for a few days. There is the ignore feature if you don't care to do it. The Caching Disorder Challenge Find at least one cache. Love this one that is a direct slap in the face to all of the crazy challenges that I enjoy Challenge "Resurrection" The Pennsylvania All Counties ChallengeIt took us two years to get to the final after completing the requirments but we had a great time traveling around our home state considering we live in one of the extreme corners. Challenges that I don't care for go on my ignore list although I have one of those that I'm working on and have completed the requirements for another.
  9. I know the signs that you're referring to Captain (like the one outside the Market House) and I'm pretty sure that if you submit them to the Signs of History category they will pass without any problem.
  10. My wife and I are planning on attending and would be happy to meet with you. I have a sticker.
  11. We'll be in the area within the next few weeks for the Delaware C&D trail. Hopefully you'll have it in place by then.
  12. A premium membership allows you to ignore categories on the Waymarking site. A regular membership does not.
  13. I can't stand the beta maps with one of the issues being that they aren't updated instantly. I guess the advantage to that is that they load faster and use less of the servers' resources. I'm not sure how often they updated but we had a cache near me that was published 3 hours ago and it's still not showing up on the beta. On a good note, it looks as if personalization has been enabled once again on the old maps!
  14. Miss Jen is back. Uh-oh. I spoke too soon. Now she's gone too.
  15. The building that collapsed was where the main activities are going to be held. According to a post on the forums of geowoodstock.com from the Event Coordinator of Geowoodstock IX, they hope to have the pavillion rebuilt in time for the event. If not there is a backup plan in place. I'm very familiar with the fairgrounds as my family camped there during fair week for many years. They have many other options available.
  16. And now the next five cachers are annoyed with *you* for gobbing up their "last 5 logs" on their paperless device. Exactly what I was going to say! - Sent from my iPhone It's not like these devices are "everywhere" - it's typically more tech-savvy people using them, and they should be aware of what their device is doing & how to shut off the annoying bits. - Sent from my iPad All the more reason to politely let them know that it's annoying & asking them to remove it. - Sent from my Droid Wow, you have an iphone AND a Droid? So does that mean that you hate yourself? I do realize that the tagline is annoying, but I just didn't think posting a paragraph of gobble-de-gook on someone else's cache in retaliation was such a good thing. *#& (And I did suggest in my original post that if you are annoyed by it, then contact the poster, and ask them to remove it.) Seriously, reading through the thread, I wonder if people who log from the field have, or know how to use, the field notes. When did field notes come about? I can't remember when field notes appeared on my PN-40; I know that I discovered them quite by accident. It sounds like, at least with some of the phone aps, that if you log from the field, it logs it with the default tag-line only, and you have to edit your log later. I don't really know, all my phone does is make calls and text. It's still branded as "Cingular", if that gives you any idea of how old it is! *Information posted later clarified that the gobble-de-gook was posted on an event cache, in addition to a real log, and that the logger had previously met the CO. So in this case, it was probably pretty funny. #I still really hope that people will think twice about posting a similar paragraph of gobble-de-gook, because it would be really, really annoying to get that on my gps in the last 5 logs area. &If you really must post a paragraph of gobble-de-gook to someone's cache to make a point, at least post it (so they get the e-mail), but then edit it out so others don't have to deal with it! Thank you for noticing that I mentioned that this "gobble-de-gook" was on an event cache so I'm sure that no one is going to care about the last five logs. I also included a paragraph of complimentary mumbo-jumbo before the "gobble-de-gook" when I posted the log. My PN-60 holds an unlimited number of logs (well I'm sure there's a limit but I don't know what it is) but I've limited it to 15 because it seems that the majority of them are useless TFTC, found it (which is the default for DeLorme field notes), TNLN SL or copy and paste gobble-de-gook. I think I'm going to start using GSAK to delete the useless ones from caches that I put on my routes in the future. That will require some work, but it may pay off in the end. Read some my logs and I think you'll find that they're usually pretty well done.
  17. If I ever find one of your caches I'll be sure to simply log "TFTC" (which I've never done by the way) instead of trying to be creative and having a little fun. The cacher who held the event thought it was funny even though it was meant to get a point across.
  18. The log was on an event cache so I doubt that the next 5 cachers are going to give a rats rear end what I wrote. Besides that, I added other complimentary mumbo jumbo to the log before the smart aleck "signature"
  19. The log that I used recently for an owner that logged my caches using the Trimble garbage. Logged from my Intel Core 2 Quad based desktop PC custom built by Union City Computer Works with 3GB of DDR2 memory, running Windows 7 Professional and Internet Explorer Version: 8.06001.18943 with a Cipher Strength of 256-bits, protected by Norton Internet Security 2010 Version 17.7.0.12 by Symantec Corporation, entering characters via a Microsoft wireless keyboard, sending data through a Linksys WRT54G by Cisco wireless router and a Westel VersaLink modem that's connected to Verizon DSL running at 3.0Mbps download and 768Mbps upload, with bits being routed through ERIEPA-DSL-01.verizon-gni.net, PITT2-CORE-RTR1.verizon-gni.net, LCC1-RES-BB-RTR1-RE1.verizon-gni.net, 0.so-4-1-0.XL3.IAD8.ALTER.NET, 0.so-2-0-0.XT1.SEA1.ALTER.NET, POS6-0.GW7.SEA1.ALTER.NET, internap-gw.customer.alter.net and border8.t7-1-bbnet1.sef.pnap.net before finally reaching Groundspeak's server farm and being stored in their database.

I really need to learn to read. Shame on you for not posting a "Will Attend" log!

I don't think it's a bug and the owner probably shouldn't have sent an announcement. The purpose of an announcement according to Groundspeak's release notes for the 06/29/2010 site update is: "A new log type is available to help event planners communicate with guests. If you are the owner of an event and have an announcement, post a log of this type and an email will be sent to everyone who logged a "Will Attend". " We had a local event where the event owner found out that he was going to be out of state on the day of the event. Several weeks before the event he sent an announcement to notify everyone of the date change. I think it's a very useful feature if used properly.
