how to download free maps to etrex 20?

You don't download directly to your etrex. These are the basic steps:

  • Download the map file
  • Install maps into either BaseCamp or MapSource
  • Use either BC or MS to install maps to your etrex

That depends. If you download an img file there is no need to use either BC or MS, you can load it directly onto the GPS.

Indeed, but I've never seen a downloadable img file, have you?

Yes, in fact that's all I ever use. The two sites sussamb linked to above provide .img files I think, as does http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

It's all I ever use. I avoid Garmin's software whenever I can.

What map format do you download? OP was asking about free maps.

Yes, often. I would not have posted the info had I not done so myself.

Only topo maps which can be sourced free or fee, and I've only seen them as exe files. For streets, a Nuvi comes loaded with maps and I wouldn't use a handheld for streets, no speech/small screen.

Agreed, many sites provide .img files that can be simply 'dropped' into your GPS.

Ok could you give me a specific website that I can do that with for south eastern united states?
