Authorities investigating body of man found in preserve

Anyone have further information about this incident? I searched for caches around Lake Carina and didn't find anything that matched. The cache in question might have been archived by now.

Authorities investigating body of man found in preserve

Authorities are investigating the death of a man whose body was found Wednesday evening in a wooded area along the Des Plaines River at the Lake Carina Forest Preserve near Gurnee.

The decomposed body was discovered about 7:45 p.m. near a tree along the river bank by a geocacher looking for a hidden item using GPS coordinates, according to John Tannahill, chief of the Lake County Forest Preserve District's Ranger Police.

"It was just by coincidence," Tannahill said of the find south of I-94. The geocacher tracked the coordinates of a small plastic box that had been placed in the tree earlier this spring.

Tannahill said the body was that of a man who apparently died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A handgun was found near the body, Tannahill added. An identification is pending.

"The body actually was right next to a tree right on the (river) bank," he said. "Because of the condition of the body, the coroner will have to compare dental records." He could not estimate how long the body had been there.

Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd was not immediately available for comment.

Geocaching is an activity in which people using GPS coordinates posted on a website find hidden objects.

"It's like a high-tech game of hide and seek," Tannahill said. The person who found the body was the first to find the plastic box and immediately called police, he added.

Lake Carina is east of Milwaukee Avenue and southwest of I-94 along the Des Plaines River Trail and Greenway. A trail encircles the 53-acre lake and there are woods on the east side between the river and trail.

I know at least one geocacher who has found a body while geocaching. It happens.

Another COG geocaching team also found a dead body this past winter.

I know of a "lcoal" cache that had to be disabled because human remains were found in the vicinity of the cache, in a small park.

So do I... it happens out at the coast in Oregon. It was a group of cachers when they discover a body.

It seems that cachers do run into those things because we cachers tends to go places that most people wont go because there is a cache there waiting to be found. Otherwise, nobody would be there.

Morbid and sad and yada yada yada, but I really liked the part where they went ahead and found the cache before calling police.

Also, the first thing that popped into my head was if the decomposing gentleman in question chose that spot in order to be found at a later date. Heck of a FTF prize.

Well you know, after you place the call it's going to take a while for the police to show up. Might as well wander over and find the cache. Plus then when the cops ask why you were there, and they've never heard of geocaching, you can easily show them the box to prove your reason for being there.

I would also imagine that once the police arrived, they would shoo everybody, including the cacher, away from the area. If you'd really like that smiley, make sure to get it before the police show up.
