Ma & Pa Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 WE are presently caching in California Here is our log for an encounter with a muggle ********************** TFTC Nice hide Interesting encounter with a muggle while looking for this cache. MA & PA looking for a cache. Muggle Lady (ML) drives up ML: "Are you doing a scavenger hunt?" PA:"No, we are geocaching, looking for a geocache" ML: "OH, did you find it?" PA:"No, we think we are on the wrong side of the fence based on a hint we have" MA & PA head to the other side of the fence and find the cache. PA brings the cache to show the ML ML: "How much was in it?" PA: "Just a log sheet to sign" ML:"How much money was in it?" PA: "No money just a log sheet" ML:"So how do you get the money?" PA:" There is no money" PA then explains a little about caching and logging on line and how the site adds the finds, and how many caches there are, etc. PA: "We put the container back where we got it., and we log it online" ML:"So what do you get?" PA:"Nothing. You log it and your find count goes up" ML:"So you get no money?" PA:"No, It is just a game" ML: "Have fun" Quote
Gitchee-Gummee Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Fairly typical... If there's no money in it, why would I bother? You do know that geocachers aren't typical, don't you?    Quote
Straight-Cache-Homey Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Wait, you didn't mean geocashing? Quote
Mockingbird559 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Wouldn't it be nice to have a dollar for every time we had to explain cache is not cash? Quote
uxorious Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 There has been a few times I've been explaining this game to someone who really seemed interested. As soon as they realized it is cache, not cash, their eyes glazed over and they lost interest. Quote
Fiver1 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 Crud. I knew I was doing this all wrong. I wondered why I wasn't finding any cash in the cache. The people before me took it all. Quote
wimseyguy Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 I'm thinking that $1/find still wouldn't pay for all the gas I have used over the years. But I'm having lots of FUN so it doesn't really matter. Quote
simpjkee Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I once had a nice encounter like that with a LEO. He told me how it sounded like a nice hobby for him to do with his son and everything. Then the cache turned up missing. Quote
fbingha Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I've collected $2 so far from caches for FTF. Now if I took the pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters that I see, I might be up to $10 by now. Quote
Rustynails Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Why do I spend so much time going into the woods looking for useless crap? Am I crazy? Quote
ras_oscar Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 I found a $20 bill in a cache once. Traded even Quote
-CJ- Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 (edited) I once came to a cache and waited patiently until there were no muggles around. Then I quickly approached the GZ, grabbed the cache, and at this very moment a young couple appeared at the corner of the nearest buulding. There was nothing in my behaviour that could interest them. I tried to be stealthy and was ready to pretend I'm trying to fix a lens at my camera. However the young guy (G) crossed the square and approached me. G: - Hey! You found it! Can't be! ME: - What? G: - That little thing you're holding! ME: - Are you... G: - Nah, I'm not of your breed. Just live not far from here. ME: - Then how... G: - Browsed the net and saw a website. Knew there were several such boxes in the city. Found a couple. Just was interested how it worked. ME: - And this one... G: - Failed twice. Maybe I was too drunk? Yes. Too drunk. It's amazing that you found it so quickly! Edited February 14, 2013 by -CJ- Quote
tweetiepy Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 People seem to think we're crazy for chasing these little bits of paper. My M-I-L asked me what we got out of geocaching? "What's the use?" - "Why?" Gee I spend time with my son and it gets him away from the TV, PC, whatever and he gets some fresh air and I'm hoping that later on when he's older, he'll remember what we did together on weekends and how much fun we had looking all over the place for little bits of paper...
