Coolest cache containers ever?

Hello everyone. First post here, been lurking for a while. My name is Brian and I am from a small town in Connecticut (United States). I have been geocaching for a few months now. I have only logged 28 finds, but have well over 50 if you count the ones I found with a buddy of mine before I started doing it on my own.

 

I have decided to make my own multi-cache series. I know some people say wait until you find a hundred caches before you make your own, but I have cached in five states, have done plenty of research, and have put tons of thought into what I am planning to do. I was never a huge fan of the Ninja Turtles as a kid, but a cache I found dangling by a string in a sewer while down in Pennsylvania inspired me. I plan on putting these in four different sewers around my town. The will be titled "TMNT *Turtle's name* Cache". My town is very diverse, and I would like to put one in each corner so that out-of-towners can get a good look at where I live. I know by the third or fourth turtle they will be easy to find, but I think it will be really fun for the kids as well as anyone who likes a trip down memory lane. The pictures should be pretty self explanatory. I hope you enjoy them! Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

I love when people use a little bit more time and brain power like you did, lovely :-)

you even made nice log sheets, painted a few containers so they are more fun

and use water tight gasket containers !!! this will make your log nice and dry longer,

cause less service and less waisted time performing endless service =

more spare time to go out and have FUN...

My town is very diverse, and I would like to put one in each corner so that out-of-towners can get a good look at where I live.

 

Are those "real" bison tubes or some of those pill containers one can get at a drug store. If they're the latter, prepare to do a lot of maintenance as they will leak and the logs will get wet.

 

It sounds like you could also run into proximity issues if you try to put one at every corner and is there *really* something interesting to see at every corner in your small town?

I have gone back and forth so many times about possibly using pieces of coordinates in each cache to lead to a fifth unlisted cache, but honestly I can't handle that. My fear with these caches is that they will be stolen by muggles because they look so cool. Even with the disclaimer on the first page of the log sheet, I'm sure some punk kid is bound to steal one eventually. If I have to order more containers, I don't want to have it take 2+ weeks to be able to get the missing clue back out. On top of that, I'd have to find a new location as I am not going to make the same mistake twice.

 

I also think that just finding all four of them will be fun in itself. I think of it as if I were the cacher. If I were to come up on one of these, pulled it out of the sewer and see that it was in deed a ninja turtle... I'd get a pic and want to find the remaining three asap just for the fun factor, you know?

Thanks. Whenever I do projects, regardless of what it is, I always like to go the extra mile. I have seen some really clever caches out on my journeys, and it always makes it that much more fun. I can't stand when I have to hike through the woods, or wait for a muggle clearing just to find the same old film container (with a soaked log). I think I am going to plastic baggy the logs anyway. I'm sure the o-ring will go eventually and someone is bound to not cap it properly at some point, lol.

Several of the comments were actually geocachers expressing their joy at the fact the fact that their logs have stayed dry for months. Proximity wont be an issue. I say the phrase "small town" in regards to the towns and cities around me, but it's actually a pretty good size. It has a population of 24,000+, six grocery stores, four dunkin donuts, sixteen car dealerships, four lakes, etc... Until I recently started researching the placing of my own caches, I didn't even think proximity was an issue. There are many spots in town you can park and have no more than a 3 or 4 minute walk in several directions before finding a cache. I just searched by my town's zip code. There are 392 caches within a ten mile radius.

The page that shows up is for a Pill Container, which *looks* like a bison tube but isn't as waterproof as a "real" Bison tube (which is made by a company called Bison). I bought several containers like the ones shown from a chain Pharmacy and pretty much all of them leaked after a fairly short amount of time. You can replace the O-rings on them to make them more water resistant, but if you're going to be hanging them from sewer drains they're going to get exposed to quite a bit of water.

Your town is a lot less saturated than many places (for example, there are 1677 caches within a 10 mile radius of Seattle, WA) but more so than where I live (225 caches within a 10 mile radius in a town of about 30,000). Proximity is always an issue as any cache submitted has to be more than 528' from any other physical cache. I'd suggest a thorough reading of the placement guidelines before you go out and start placing the containers. You've done a nice job on them and it would be nice to have some nice locations for them as well.

Those containers are really cool. I think it was mentioned before, but is there something interesting in the proximity of these sewer drains? Cool old buildings? Statues? You'll get plenty of finds, but there are also a large number of cachers who have no desire to dig around sewer grates solely because there's a cache there. I'd suggest that you branch out a little farther than just around the block, and place these well designed caches someplace interesting.

 

Again, that's just a suggestion. Good job on the interesting containers

I have always liked the TMNT, even have a tattoo of one. I think you did a good job on these containers and I hope you receive a good response from other cachers. I would seek these caches for sure. I wouldn't even care if there were cool or interesting things to see nearby.

My only concern is people dropping them into the sewer when retreiving them or replacing them. I've lost many nanos because people dropped them then couldn't find them.

Each is tethered by high test fishing line. There's no real chance of them falling in unless someone accidentally drops the bottom half in while opening it. I hope most are smart enough to open it away from the sewer.

Kewl concept! Extra kudos for the artwork. The only thing I would have done differently is the container selection.

The only hide I owned that hung from a sewer grate was a 30 calibre ammo can.

My only concern would be that they might go missing after any big rains. With a lot of water (and debris) washing down over them, the fishing line might not be able to hold up.

 

I guess time will tell.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. In regards to the caches holding up, I am confident they are going to. Two of the sewers I used are definitely blocked and haven't seen water flow (other than rain) in years. We have had unbelievable heavy rains in CT over the last few weeks. I mean hours upon hours of downpour and power outages. So far all the caches have held up fine. There was one cache that ended up a floater for a day or so, but all was well once the water level dropped. I used pretty high test line that I don't see snapping unless someone intentionally tries stealing the cache... which I sadly think is far more likely. So far people are really enjoying the cache, especially those who grew up with TMNT back in the day. Parents are saying their kids are loving them and having a really good time. I have very big plans in the works for more themed caches like this, so stay tuned!
