Volunteer Cache Hiders needed in Detroit and England

I am Air

Recommended Posts

Hello! We're trying to hide two caches out of our area, and need help.

Is anyone interested in hiding caches in the Detroit/Auburn Hills and London, England areas?

A member of our team will meet you somewhere to hand the cache off to you.

We would ask that you simply hide the cache and e-mail me the coordinates.

The caches are new ammo cans, painted flat black with rubberized interiors.

Thank you!!!

This account is less than three weeks old. No Hides. No Finds. You want volunteers to simply hide caches out of your area that you will own? What is your maintenance plan? Have you read the cache placement guidelines? An ammo can in the London, England area? How far outside London did you have in mind?

I will assume that you meant "hide and list under your gc account", right? ;);):P:)

There are some VERY strict local guidelines to be followed for placing caches in London.

One of the UK reviewers had to contact the Metropolitan Police, and agree that caches adhere to the strict guidelines, so not to cause security problems.

(Which will get even more strict, with the Olympic Games due to take place in 2012)

Owners of caches in Vancouver and Whistler at the time of the Winter Olympics this year were asked to remove their caches for the duration of the Games by the BCGA. Obviously, it was just those caches in the main areas. How will the OP ensure that this is done for the 2012 Games? What if the person in London is unable or unwilling to maintain the cache on your behalf? It isn't just the Games, but with other events such as bombings in recent years.... When I still lived in the UK, London was EXTREMELY security conscious, and is more so now.

Sorry, but I don't think much of this idea, and I don't know that a reviewer will either.

The whole thing seems to me that they are looking for someone to hide the caches and take the fall in case someone gets tapped on the shoulder. I'm struggling with why does a premium member want someone else to hide the caches and then provide them with the coordinates. There is something that does not feel right, but maybe I'm a bit suspicious by nature.

I hope that the OP comes back to clarify and explain. This is an extremely strange request. I would advise others not to jump in on this until we know some anwers... :D

I followed the website address on the OP's post. Trawled a little through the forums linked to that site and found this Forum Link Looks like its some kind of commercial publicity / PR stunt (although I can't for the life of my work out what for).

Leave well alone !!!!

"The idea is for people that are not already fans to discover the caches and get to know the band.

Over time, we can also gather items for additional caches and mail the caches to geocachers in other locations to hide and register online."

"Today I bought the first two cache containers, liquid rubber to waterproof the insides and rustproof flat black paint. I'll post pics as we go along, as well as pics of the goodies inside the caches before they are hidden."

Honestly, I don't have a huge problem with the idea in general, but I think the idea is that they just want 100 containers out eventually that promote their band. They have 2 ready to go.

I doubt they will be able to maintain those caches, so basically its about getting 100 people to maintain caches for them promoting their band? Thoughts?

The 100 Monkeys.

"Their music is said to have a blues like feel, and their performances give off a 60s like vibe, mimicking bands such as the Beatles. Their sound has also been described by MTV.com as a blend of “Iggy Pop with the Raconteurs.”

:D (Now my brain is struggling a bit.)

I'm sure it'll be fine.*

*Just as long as they've read this,

and understood these, (specifically this) and (for the London cache) also read up on this.)

Looks like someone's trying to outflank the guidelines.

Or perhaps the title should have been...Free Caches for you to hide. Maybe not too bad. Why not just come out with the whole story though? Make 20 to 50 small Caches already stocked with your free goodies, and just give them away to be hidden. No strings attached, of course(except to make sure you get informed of the listing so you can keep track).

If a member of your team could meet us in London to hand over the cache, why can't the member of your team hide the cache themselves?

We're conflustered :(

Maintenance.

It's classed as a 'Vacation Cache' and not allowed as the cache placer would be unable to perform maintenance 'within a reasonable time', so would need someone local to do the maintenance.

add.

And I suspect that the person/persons handing over the cache may well not be cachers themselves...

Also, this is an "Unofficial" fan site. Does the band, their agent, or record company have any say on how they are being promoted?

I would say no, it's all the OP's idea. She's an admin on this unofficial site. She may have some Geocaching experience and is using a new account, or she may be someone who joined Geocaching.com about a month ago, but hasn't found any caches yet.

Either way, I think this is a totally innocent attempt by someone from a fan website to promote their favorite band. Could they get away with it? I believe so, if they work with the local reviewers, and name the caches and word the cache pages very carefully. But that's just my opinion.

Why does everyone assume the cache will be near the Olympics?

Its not like the Olympics are taking over the entire city. Sports venues only take up a small area. Look how much of the local population doesnt give a rat's behind when the Olympics are nearby.

Place the cache in London, plenty of places away from the sports venues.

Groundspeak state "Local Guidelines may apply"

UK Local Guidelines for the London area are:

1: Due to the high security status of these areas:

Cachers are requested to try to avoid acting in a suspicious or furtive manner, when searching for a geocache or when placing one.

2:The following prominent warning to be placed on all cache pages in plain text, within the

areas affected by this agreement.

"This cache is located within an area frequently patrolled by Police. Please avoid acting suspiciously whilst searching for it, and if challenged, explain about geocaching"

3: All containers to be clearly marked as Geocaches.

4: All owners of caches in the affected areas to provide a written description of the container and a general description of how it is hidden [e.g. magnetic, under bush, attached to underside of seat]. These written descriptions to be updated immediately if the container is changed or moved.

5: Cache owners to provide a photograph of the container [to be updated immediately if the container is changed].

6: Deceangi to act as liaison between the Metropolitan Police Unit and the UK Reviewer Team and UK geocaching community.

7: Deceangi to provide and maintain an up-to-date cache location map of the affected areas.

Provided that the agreed information is provided and kept up-to-date, the Specialist Search Unit from the Metropolitan Police Force have no objections to Geocaching continuing in these areas.

The area covered is larger than the stadiums to be used for the Olympics.

The Guidelines are in force now, and have been in force for over three years.
