Deleting Log?

Southern Lights

Recommended Posts

Hi, as a newbie geocacher, I made a major geocaching faux pas and logged a TB before the person before me got to log it. I got an angry email from them (understandably) saying that I didn't give them a chance to log their time with the TB before I did. I only logged because I noted from the previous logs that no one had logged a grab and assumed that they would do this before dropping it off in another cache.

Anyway, I don't suppose there is anyway to rectify the situation by removing my log, allowing the previous person to do their log and then relogging my own visit?

Also, I realise I have done wrong here, so if you're just going to post to tell me off, don't bother, I've learned my lesson. Thanks.

Go to the travel bug page, look at your log. On the far right side there should be a button that says "visit log". Click on this. On this page there will be a large title "Travel Bug Log, and underneath there will be two buttons; "edit log" and "delete log". Press the "delete log" button to delete your log.

Is this fool-proof enough?

Not sure you did anything wrong. What is the time frame between when you picked it up and when they dropped it off?

If we're talking hours here, yes, you have to wait a little bit (a day or two) to give them a chance. If we're talking that it sat there longer, it is the other cachers problem.

Not sure I understand the issue of logging "their time with" it. If it is a matter of getting the miles, drop it back in the cache (Virtually, not literally) and delete your log(s). This should work. Email the previous finder to do their thing and then pick it back up and all should be good with the world.

TB's are different than other logs. You can go months, weeks even years before catching up on your caching logs however TB's are much different. People need to learn to log these ASAP, myself included.

When all is said and done, the sun will still rise tomorrow and the world should not shudder on it's axis. No real harm.

Ah thank you! Not sure how I missed the 'delete button' but there you go.

Yes, apparently it had only been dropped off hours before, but I didn't know that until I got the email - I don't understand how I could have known if it hadn't been logged?

The last log for this TB was not the cache I found it in and the last log for the cache was almost a month ago. Therefore I thought the previous person would have had enough time to log taking the TB from the previous cache before dropping it in the cache I found it in.

As I understand it, there are essentially two logs with a TB - the log where you take it from the cache you found it in, and then a second log you do when you drop it in a new cache. Should you not log the first one before dropping it in the second one?

Hope that makes sense, just trying to work out what the TB etiquette is here.

Wouldn't worry about it too much.

If you find a TB in a cache and it isn't logged in, it's always a good idea to give cachers a chance to log.

This could be a day, or on a long weekend it could be longer. Could even be a week or two, if the cacher is on holiday.

It's worth checking to see if the TB is logged into another cache, or if it's 'in the hands of...'

If it's in the hands of, you should give them a chance to log it!

If all else fails, grab the TB, drop it in the cache you found it in, retrieve and continue it's journey.

That keeps the mileage correct. If the TB has visited other caches any logs older than yours will be put in date order, and the servers will eventually sort the travels out!

I've been on both ends of this issue.

Physically dropped a TB, and had it grabbed from me before I could log the cache.

I didn't let it ruin my day.

Found and retrieved a Geocoin from a cache, and waited several days for the current holder to log the cache...but they didn't drop the coin.

So I grabbed it from them so I could drop it in the cache I had left it in by that time.

They got all pissey about it.

I didn't let it ruin my day.

It's called common courtesy. Allow at least a week for the other cacher to log it into the cache where you found it. These things can take time. Retrieving a travel bug before the other cacher logs it is rather rude.

Hope you have learnt from this.

I think calling it "rude" is a bit harsh! If you are a person who logs quickly, it can be particularly annoying to not be able to log a TB that you picked up, especially if you'd like to drop it again. A week is generous. At that point, I'd grab it, drop it into the cache where I found it so it gets proper miles and move on with my life.

This is excellent advice. Then when the next day the next cacher grabs the bug and logs it before you grabbed it and logged you avoid all those nasty pissy emails. I like that idea.

'Tis true, you probably should have waited longer, if not logged in a week then you email the person that the TB page shows it still in the hands of, and ask them to log it. They may have forgotten.

It cannot help with this particular case, but for future movements (TB movements, that is...) in order to prevent a similar thing from happening to you read this forum link: An Aide. It helps and is something easy to do.

Most of all, have fun. The earth just may quiver on its' axis, but I still think the sun will rise tomorrow. :(
