Danielc Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 Hi, The other day I got a cache note to the effect that there was a snake in one of my caches - or to be more accurate sharing the cache hide. This put me in a bit of a quandary. The cache is in a state forest in which the wildlife is protected. Would evicting the snake from its home - even though I made that home - be considered interfering with the wildlife? Should I have just disabled the cache until such time as the snake vacated the site? Since I live in taipan country, and the log didn't state what sort of snake was there, it could have been a pretty serious situation. As it was, I armoured up fit to survive a minor nuclear explosion and went to do battle. Thankfully the reptile had departed. Have you been faced with a similar situation and what did you do about it? Cheers, Dan Quote
+thedeadpirate Posted March 24, 2010 Posted March 24, 2010 I can't answer whether or not you are allowed to removed critters in Australian state parks. However, I did happen upon a little fellow making himself at home at a cache that I subsequently adopted. He was harmless, so I just reached in picked him up and set him on his way. Quote
+Mother Wolf Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Last wk my partner & I were out & she found that 'Flower', a skunk, had made the cubby its home. It goes without saying, but I will say it anyhow, she just left everything alone & backed away. Good thing too because it would have been a heck of a walk home for her LOL Quote
Mushtang Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 Enough is ENOUGH! I have had it with these monkey fighting snakes on this Monday to Friday cache!!!! Quote
+Bergie Bunch Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 We have a cache that has been adopted by a 6' black snake. I have twice moved the cache to another location, only to find it back with the snake, so we posted a warning, placed a sign at ground zero and let the games begin. No complaints so far, the snake has not whined once about visitors. Quote
+StarBrand Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 I have 3 cache hides that finders have posted photos of a snake resting on the cache when they found it. No big deal from where I sit. I Just added a cautionary note to the listing pages. Quote
+5Taylors Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 I'm so glad I'm in the UK. None of those problems here! Denise Quote
+42at42 Posted March 26, 2010 Posted March 26, 2010 I'm jealous. I want a snake for my cache. I've had a squirrel move one of my caches. Quote

+cw1710 Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 I have a cache that several people reported seeing a snake very neary the container. They all whined that that cache should be moved. I posted a nice little note on the cache page reminding people that there is an attribute with a snake on it to the right side of the cache page and that if they were afraid of snakes then they need not search for this one. About a week ago I was out in the woods looking for a spot to put a cache when I stepped on about a 3 foot rattlesnake. I was nice enough not to hide the cache in that particular spot although thats what I was doing when I disturbed the snake. I found a spot about 50 feet away but hes still close by. Quote
knowschad Posted March 27, 2010 Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) Where is St Patrick when you really need him, anyway? Seriously... if you have explicit permission to hide that cache, you should check with those that gave you the permission. They should know the proper thing to do. +DragonsWest Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 I've been prevented at 2 caches by rattlesnakes. Rattlesnake > A find Quote

That snake venom is worth Big Zorkmids! I should take along a snake milking kit. (Anyone know what snake udders look like?) Quote
+Lil Devil Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 An excerpt from one of my logs 8 years ago: I found a rattlesnake literally wrapped around the cache container. Fortunately I noticed him before I started moving rocks around. At first I thought it was a joke placed by Ron, but a quick poke with a stick confirmed the seriousness of the situation. I snapped a few pictures, then a few more prods with the stick and he moved away far enough that I could extract the cache. I retreated to the trail below to log the cache and trade items. Took a colorful superball. Left an equally colorful large marble. When I climbed back to return the cache, I realized I no longer knew where my slithery friend was. I quickly and carefully replaced everything and got the heck outta there. Quote

+roziecakes Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 I suppose I should consider myself lucky that the worst thing I've found in a cache was the slug that I thought was a poo. Eesh. Quote

Cheers, Dan I was in almost the same situation: went to do maintenance on a cache (2 DNF's), found the container in its hiding spot. A cacher had found it the day earlier, and mentioned in the logbook that a snake was sharing the place with the container. Looked around, saw no snake, did nothing else. Quote
