Most of the fence posts caches I have seen either have a container connected to a metal hanger, or have a PVC container in the post. With the metal hanger, the hanger loops over the top of the post, and the cap covers it. To access, pop the cap, then use the hanger to lift out the container. Generally, a fence with metal posts will place larger (up to 4") posts at corners, and every couple of 100 feet. Build a PVC container cache that will fit into the post. Make sure to add an eye hook on both ends. Elevate the container to just below the top of the post by dropping a stick (or small rocks) into the post. To access, pop the cap, and grab the top of the PVC container. Quote

It's the only cap on that fence that is loose, and I notice that I can in fact tighten it slightly. Finders who "test" the caps may skip it when it doesn't seem loose, even though slightly more force causes it to move easily. I set it up like that when I visit. So far, I don't think anybody's been fooled by the "not loose cap". It's probably partly because there really aren't a lot of posts there with caps to choose from. 1 Quote
+colleda Posted September 1, 2018 Posted September 1, 2018 I have a fence cap cache on my own fence. The cap is lifted off to reveal a Kinder Surprise egg containing a log roll. I have attached a pen to it using a length of string - the pen just dangles down inside the post. The Kinder egg is prevented from falling down inside the post by bolts through the post which hold fence panels in place. All nice, dry and weather proof. I often put foreign coins in it as swag. I don't mind if they're taken instead of traded as I have heaps. GC7HH9Z Quote

Since it's your first cache, I'll mention that if it's not your fence, you have to get permission from the owner! If it's THEIR cap, then you're permanently gluing something to it, and if it's YOUR cap, what are you doing with THEIRS? Do it right and make us proud! 1 Quote
+hukilaulau Posted November 1, 2024 Posted November 1, 2024 I built one once by putting a length of PVC pipe with a perforated end cap in the round post, then putting an orange matchstick container with a handle on it inside the pipe. Bought a fence post cap from Home Depot. You had to pour water in to float the container up and grab it before the water leaked out. One of my favorite placements. Eventually someone stole the cap, the cache, and the pvc pipe and that was the end of it... Quote
yoyosaregood Posted January 6 Posted January 6 I have 2 of these caches. 1 I pried the cap off and took a cork and some wire and linked the cork to the bison tube then jammed the cork in the cap and to make it easy to take of grinded it down a little. 2 I was walking and thought this spot could use a cache and tried pulling the caps and one came off. took it home and glued the cache to the inside 1 Quote
