DamhuisClan Posted September 7, 2010 Author Posted September 7, 2010 Yep, that was an awesome video, and question.
Carbon Hunter Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 OK - no takers on the question - let's get a quick one. What is the name of the award for the Russian Film Industry (i.e. the Russian equivalent of the Oscars)?
Hesamati Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 Golden bear, seems to ring a bell... but that might be for the best Vodka
Carbon Hunter Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 Nope - none close yet - the Golden Bear is the award at the Berlin film fesyval I think - not Russia
Carbon Hunter Posted September 11, 2010 Posted September 11, 2010 Sorry - this seems a little hard? It is the Nikos (or Nike) awards. New question - what is the capital of Liechtenstein?
Discombob Posted September 11, 2010 Posted September 11, 2010 Luxembourg? no luxembourg is another country/principality. I've been to one of these but I can't remember which i'll guess the capital of lichtenstein is lichtenstein / lichtenstein city

cownchicken Posted September 12, 2010 Posted September 12, 2010 (edited) Will go with Vaduz ? Edited September 13, 2010 by cownchicken
cownchicken Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 Which town in Southern Africa (and in the Southern Hemisphere) was the first to get an x-ray station?
Carbon Hunter Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 Did some research on that a while ago for a cache here in the desert. Who was known as "King of the Dusi"?
cownchicken Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 Have no idea if I'm on the right track or not. The name Henk Watermeyer just sprung up. Could it be him? Then another thought is that it can be a Mc Gregor.
Discombob Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 there was that ad for something for another a few years back, in which the tune went "Look at Brett go for the Duzi, he's a winner, wait and see", so I will say Brett
the pooks Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 Graeme Pope-Ellis? Don't know if I have the name right but he died tragically in a tractor accident on his farm just a few months ago - tractor fell on top of him. He must have farmed in the area. I think he was about 65 and has been canoeing since the early '70s
Carbon Hunter Posted September 14, 2010 Posted September 14, 2010 Graeme Pope-Ellis? Don't know if I have the name right but he died tragically in a tractor accident on his farm just a few months ago - tractor fell on top of him. He must have farmed in the area. I think he was about 65 and has been canoeing since the early '70s That's the name I was thinking of. He ruled the Dusi in both singles and doubles for most of the 70's and 80's. I did not know about his tragic death - that is so sad. You're it pooks.
the pooks Posted September 14, 2010 Posted September 14, 2010 There are some long timers in the canoeing business - it must be a healthy lifestyle. We have a nearby farmer Giel van Deventer who has done the Berg River canoe marathon 40 times! I wonder who the long time record holders are for Cape argus and Comrades - don't know the answer so won't ask that question. Here is something I can't imagine someone would know, but geocachers have had me wrong on this assumption before, so will give it a go. No takers I'll post another question. No self respecting South African will be found camping without that ubiquitous blue CADAC gas bottle for the requisite breakfast fry-up or to have the gas lamp singing away to the mozzies at night. But what does CADAC stand for?
Discombob Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 doesn;t look like anyones going to get this! Although I am sure someone told me this a few years back, but I'll be darned if I remember what it was
DamhuisClan Posted September 17, 2010 Author Posted September 17, 2010 My dad knew the answer: So I'll add a hint rather then answering outright.. Commercial And D... A... C....
the pooks Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Well Damhuis - as far as I am concerned you can supply the rest and carry on. Besides, our phone line has been stolen so I have to surf on 3G which is expensive.
malo mystery Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Commercial And Domestic A...... C.......? Commercial And Domestic And Camping??
DamhuisClan Posted September 18, 2010 Author Posted September 18, 2010 Commercial And Domestic Appliance Company Looks like the many many years my parents have been camping has paid off (LOL) Hope thats the right answer.

DamhuisClan Posted September 18, 2010 Author Posted September 18, 2010 (edited) Ok. The male part of Nish4, and I, the male part of DamhuisClan, have something very uniquely in common. What is it? Edited September 18, 2010 by DamhuisClan
DamhuisClan Posted September 18, 2010 Author Posted September 18, 2010 Hmm. Maybe not general knowledge, but I would think it is an "interesting fact" and quite a co-indecent. Ok. Pietermaritzburg has the largest of something in the world. What is it?
the pooks Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Ok. The male part of Nish4, and I, the male part of DamhuisClan, have something very uniquely in common. What is it? A five letter word that starts with "P" and ends with "s"? Hmm. Maybe not general knowledge, but I would think it is an "interesting fact" and quite a co-indecent. Ok. Pietermaritzburg has the largest of something in the world. What is it? mmm PMBurg has got a Victorian pavilion at the cricket club - it was unique but not particularly large...; Cascades, Worlds view, the hospital (forget the name)? I stayed in PMBurg for 2 years, but nothing comes to mind

Maybe not general knowledge, but I would think it is an "interesting fact" and quite a co-indecent. Ok. Pietermaritzburg has the largest of something in the world. What is it? Oh oh, I got the "world" part wrong .. Sorry!! Its the biggest in the "Southern Hemisphere" So to re-state the question: Pietermaritzburg has the largest of something in the Southern Hemisphere?
DamhuisClan Posted September 18, 2010 Author Posted September 18, 2010 Good enough CH! PMBurg has the largest red brick building in the Southern hemisphere. It burnt down in 1895 and was rebuilt in 1901. More info here
Carbon Hunter Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 In World War 2 - there was an operation that had relevance to South Africa called "Operation Ironclad" - what was this operations objective?
Carbon Hunter Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 In World War 2 - there was an operation that had relevance to South Africa called "Operation Ironclad" - what was this operations objective? OK - seems like a hint is needed. It was "African" related.
Henzz Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Just the other day I read about an air force base that was stationed at Darling in the West Coast during the War.. The planes would fly out and attack ships trying to sail around Africa... Can't remember too much detail about it, but that was about the gist of it... Could that be it? Can't remember reading about Operation Names...

Can't remember reading about Operation Names... Great guess - but not. I was actually looking for something on the search for U-Boats along the SA coast during WW2 when this was found. This was an actual operation in which a force of "allies" attacked an "axis" territory.
Gr8Scot Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 In World War 2 - there was an operation that had relevance to South Africa called "Operation Ironclad" - what was this operations objective? Did it have anything to do with an attack on a railway line that the Germans were building between Swakopmund & Windhoek in what was then SWA?
Carbon Hunter Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Again - a good guess - but this happened on another side of Africa
Carbon Hunter Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 OK - another clue - think French colony fairly close to SA
cincol Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 OK - another clue - think French colony fairly close to SA Setting up the protection of Mauritius?
Carbon Hunter Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 OK - another clue - think French colony fairly close to SA Setting up the protection of Mauritius? Close - try a little closer to home.
cincol Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 OK - another clue - think French colony fairly close to SA Setting up the protection of Mauritius? Close - try a little closer to home. Nothing else between SA and Mauritius apart from Mozambique except Madagascar. Something to do with Madagascar then? Don't know what though.
