  1. Such a shame, but that is the state of the world nowadays.
  2. For reference, 1 cache in MP and the balance in WP. Let's hope there are some CO's willing to adopt. Cache List

  5. Done a few of these and personally have always felt uncomfortable doing them for much of the same reasons already mentioned. Have also found a few that have been inside the CO's home. Assuming you get over the idea of knocking on a total stranger's door, the one's I have done have been fun meeting the CO and having a cuppa or a pint.

  8. The API updates of cache logs don’t always update correctly if one does delta updates. Ran mine a few times on that cache and it wouldn’t perform the delta update correctly. Only when I ran a total refresh of all cache logs for the cache did it tie up to what is listed on the GC site. Currently I get 327 finds for 2017 out of a total 354 logs, and that’s because i’ve just run an update. It’s difficult and a very timeous process to keep the logs in sync unfortunately. So depends on when Danie last did an update, late logs by cachers etc. can also play havoc so the number can change. Have seen some cachers do logs over 6 months after finding a cache.
  9. I suspect there's a fairly high % of those finds that are by non-SA cachers....
  10. Time will tell. I think however there is some truth to what PieterM has stated. Cache finding behavior is a large contributor to what happens to the cache population. CO's will lose interest in placing caches if people aren't interested in finding them (doesn't tick some statistical box) in the long term. Of course there are other factors at play and the usual warra warra of the glory days etc. but it does seem to be a common gripe on forums around the world.

  16. Unfortunately we need to bump this thread back up again after a cacher was rather viciously attacked over this past weekend. Most South African's are aware of the challenges we face in our country and try and take necessary precautions. Foreign cachers should take note that unfortunately many of our parks and urban spaces are not as safe as they should be and should exercise caution when out and about caching, preferably do not cache alone. Like anywhere in the world, if you don't know an area, try and gather local intel on the area before heading there. Cachers can unfortunately be easy targets. They are focused on a device and intent on looking for a cache and perhaps less observant of people approaching them. Of course many people cache with phone's nowadays and it is obvious and attractive device for would be muggers. Take care, try not cache alone, do not carry valuables. If you don't feel safe, abandon hunt and move on.
