COINTEST: Todies Wild Ride!

Rockin Roddy

Recommended Posts

I know I had a cutoff date for entries into the race and that we are now adding coins after the date...I was wondering how everyone felt about this? I don't want to upset anyone with the change in rules.

My plan is to get the last few coins I have into the game, then we'll see how it goes. I don't think we'll be releasing too many more considering I only have a few left. Will the addition of more coins later on be OK with everyone or should I stop all entries after this last cointest?? It's your call everyone.

Please email me your response so it's a confidential vote, I will abide by the vote! PLEASE...only vote if you are participating in the race.

Again, I don't want anyone to be upset with the way this is being held, I merely wish to get as many coins out raising bike awareness as possible!

One last thing...post the mileage of your coin which has traveled the furthest please, so I can get an idea of how the travels are going! Also, please post if any of your coins have gone missing already!!

OH...and more laws for bikes please!!! Keep them coming!

Ohio bike law (same as for motor vehicles)

§ 4511.36. Rules for turns at intersections.

The driver of a vehicle intending to turn at an intersection shall be governed by the following rules:

(A) Approach for a right turn and a right turn shall be made as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.

( <---my letter B turned into a smiley At any intersection where traffic is permitted to move in both directions on each roadway entering the intersection, an approach for a left turn shall be made in that portion of the right half of the roadway nearest the center line thereof and by passing to the right of such center line where it enters the intersection and after entering the intersection the left turn shall be made so as to leave the intersection to the right of the center line of the roadway being entered. Whenever practicable the left turn shall be made in that portion of the intersection to the left of the center of the intersection.

Thanks for the contest.

Here's a good one, again from Ohio.

§ 4511.54. Prohibition against attaching bicycles and sleds to vehicles.

No person riding upon any bicycle, coaster, roller skates, sled, or toy vehicle shall attach the same or self to any streetcar, trackless trolley, or vehicle upon a roadway.

Reminds me of the move Back to the Future when he hitches a ride while on his skateboard.

4511.53 Rules for Bicycles - A person operating a bicycle shall ride either standing upon the pedals or

seated upon the permanent and regular seat and shall carry no more persons than the number for which it

is designed and equipped. No person operating a bicycle shall carry any item which would prevent them

from having at least one hand on the handle bars.

This guy must not have read all aplicable traffic laws.

OK everyone, just off the phone with Rothstafari, we can open a topic in the GENERAL FORUMS which I will do in a little while. The topic will be named GEOBIKING: ALL THINGS CACHING AND BIKING!

This is a big leap for us, we can now open the thread and it should be OK as long as we focus on biking and caching! When the thread is opened, please feel free to drop in and post as often as you'd like, we are hoping the post is well received and might be able to expand it into our own sub-forums in time! This is more or less a testing of the interest, so the more we can get to visit, the better!

Keep a watch for the thread to open, I want to think about what the opening post should say!

More from Wisconsin. Kind of goes with ZB's above...

·State Statutes allow local units of government to permit vehicles on sidewalks through local ordinances. 346.94(1)]

·When bicycles are allowed to be operated on sidewalks, bicyclists must yield to pedestrians and give an audible warning when passing pedestrians traveling in the same direction. [346.804]

·At intersections and other sidewalk crossings (alleys, driveways), a bicyclist on the sidewalk has the same rights and duties as pedestrians. [346.23, 24, 25, 37, 38]

Maine law: Bicyclists are occasionally refused service at drive-up windows. Many drive-up windows have longer open hours than lobbies, while some businesses only have a drive-up window. The new law extends a liability waiver to all businesses with drive-up windows to allow bicyclists equal access to businesses including banks, restaurants, pharmacies, ATMs, etc. (14 MRSA §159-D)

Maine law: Because bicyclists typically are driving on the right portion of the way and/or on the shoulder, passing on the right is sometimes safer than pulling out into traffic to pass on the left when traffic is backed up. The new law clarifies that a bicyclist may pass on the right, at their own risk.

29-A MRSA §2070, sub-§6 Passing on the right... A person operating a bicycle may pass a vehicle on the right at the bicyclist's own risk.

Maine law: Seating. A person operating a bicycle may not ride other than upon or astride a regular and permanently attached seat. 3-A. Number of persons. A bicycle may not be used to carry more persons than the number for which it is designed and equipped. [ 2003, c. 452, Pt. Q, §43 (NEW); 2003, c. 452, Pt. X, §2 (AFF) .]

We used to have three on a bike. One on the seat, one on the handlebar and one on the bar between the handlebar and seat. It was fun. We did have more accidents doing it that way.

RULES:

Same as always, no whining, no more than one post every 10 minutes etc. Basically, just have fun and share your knowledge of the laws in your area. Posts must contain at least one law to count! I have final say and I say HAVE FUN!!!!

I am not playing to win, just having fun and learning because I didn't know the laws until this thread. I like learning new things.

Maine law: Maine's bicycle helmet law requires bicyclists under the age of 16 to wear a helmet.

Now that should be national law. Maybe more children would survive then.

mapofus.gif

Green are state laws requiring helmets

Red Local laws

White No Laws

In 2006, 773 bicyclists were killed and an additional 44,000 were injured in traffic crashes. Children 14 and younger accounted for 98 of those fatalities (13%), making this one of the most frequent causes of injury related death for young children.

Every dollar spent on bicycle helmets saves society $30 in indirect medical costs and other costs.

That's great info; I am really surprised to see so little green and so much red and white!

Another Oregon law...

814.480: Nonmotorized vehicle clinging to another vehicle; penalty.

(1) A person commits the offense of nonmotorized vehicle clinging to another vehicle if the person is riding upon or operating a bicycle, coaster, roller skates, sled or toy vehicle and the person clings to another vehicle upon a roadway or attaches that which the person is riding or operating to any other vehicle upon a roadway.

(2) The offense described in this section, nonmotorized vehicle clinging to another vehicle, is a Class D traffic violation. [1983 c.338 §707]

ZB, my friend, if you made up a powerpoint with this stat and the others I know you can come up with (like the other informative post you provided us a few up), you'd be halfway to getting yourself a beautiful LACKEY coin!!! I have every bit of confidence in you, my friend, give it some thought, look up some more great facts, put in plenty of illustrations and stats and you'll wow them!!

Bubba, you turn the lights down, you start the powerpoint and you read some statistics (in the dark while everyone else predisposed to checking out the graphics). Make the powerpoint almost as long as you want the presentation to be, leaving just enough room for a Q&A or maybe a short sumary, then close it up and you're all good!! Your biggest issue is getting enough good graphics to keep their interest! Give a camera to a friend and ask that pics be taken so you can post them here!!

I know you can do it, you'll do great!

Per Michigan vehicle code

I like that one. I have been refused service at drive up windows because they would be liable if I were run over. With this law, they cannot be held liable, so shouldn't refuse service. SuperCool!

Yep, Oregon is green

I knew that because our kids are required to wear helmets, although we would make them wear them anyway......

814.485: Failure to wear protective headgear; penalty.

(1) A person commits the offense of failure of a bicycle operator or rider to wear protective headgear if the person is under 16 years of age, operates or rides on a bicycle on a highway or on premises open to the public and is not wearing protective headgear of a type approved under ORS 815.052.

We used to have an extra on the handlebars, but the cool kids with the Mongoose BMX Bikes...They had pegs attached to the rear axle for someone to stand on.

Virginia

Violation of state traffic laws is considered a traffic infraction and is punishable by a fine of not more than $100 unless other specific penalty provisions apply

So if going over the speed limit is one of the laws I'd be in the hole big time. Lets see I've only gone 30mph in a 15mph how many times. To many to count.

It is not allowed to speak in mobile phones when you are driving, no matter if you are in a car or a motorbike! there is an exception only if the mobile is in a stable base on the vihicle, and you are using speakers (you know the ones mobiles have and you can talk without holding your mobile...).
