Can you buy sheets of that clingy plastic used for temporarily protecting screens ?

 

Alternatively, are there those metal bar bits available like you get on activity watches.

Andy isn't home right now, so I can't give you any details-but what he does for our gps is to use a screen protector for an iPaq and cut it down to fit the screen on the Gps.

It seems to work very well!!!!!!

I've bought screen protectors for my Legend and my iQue over the Internet from HERE

Why don't you want a case? Do the Garmin cases effect reception or is it just too big and bulky?

For my Geko I just cut a piece of clear thin plastic to size and stuck it on with upvc tape (yellow to match the Geko).

 

I wish I'd done the same with my MLR - even though it lives in its case when it's not in use, I managed to scratch the screen within days of buying it.

I'm thinking all 'other' cachers must be clumsy. Never needed screen protectors in all my years of PDA, Phone & GPSr use. What are you guys doing with your mobile techs?

I consider a screen protector as a very cheap insurance policy. If I scratch the protector, I replace it (or I replace it after a year or so anyway). If I scratched the PDA screen, that would be a different matter

I've been using Writerite screen protectors on my PDAs for years now - the one on my Sony has lasted about 3 years so far. Basically, they're sticky backed plastic (but removable) similar to the bit of plastic protecting your mobile phone screen when it was new.

 

One advantage is that they've got a roughened surface, which cuts down on reflections.

 

I'd never thought about putting one on the etrex though. Might have to try that.

Too bulky.

Don't mind it getting scratched, that's wear 'n' tear but the screen is a different matter.

Can you get replacement screens for etrexs? I had a yellow one for 5 years and never used any protection and it never got scratched. Upgraded last year to a Vista C and scratched it on day one

Apparantly, Garmin have a good service department for replacing cracked screens.

 

Another possibility - the non-reflective screen protectors do quite a good job of covering small scratches.

Just got a nice Garmin case for my eTrex from eBay, nicely padded and protective and will stop me knocking it against rock faces as I have done in the past!
