+ChileHead Posted November 28, 2004 Posted November 28, 2004 Often I'd like to attach information to a cache that only I (as owner) can see. Generally this would be: - coordinates of all the waypoints of the cache, so when I perform maintainance I can jump in the middle easily - hints for myself and/or others, so when somebody is stuck I can refresh my memory - info about problems others had so when I perform maintainance, all the info is together Currently I keep all this type of info in mailnotes or files on my PC, but it certainly would be nice to keep it all consolidated together. What are the chances of getting an owner only viewable note type added? Thanks.
+baloo&bd Posted November 28, 2004 Posted November 28, 2004 I have to admit, this would be a great feature. It would also allow the ability to leave up notes from when you first posted the cache as well as approver notes.
+Hemlock Posted November 28, 2004 Posted November 28, 2004 I'm confused You can post a note directly and privately to a cache owner now
+ChileHead Posted November 28, 2004 Author Posted November 28, 2004 I'm confused You can post a note directly and privately to a cache owner now You're talking about emailing the owner. I want the ability to post an "owner's log note" to the cache, just like any other log entry, that stays attached to the cache, that only the owner can see. This would be an option available only to the owner of the cache.

+shunra Posted November 29, 2004 Posted November 29, 2004 I'd find that useful, too. I have a multi with two virtual waypoints, but I never remember the coordinates of the actual cache.
+BlueDeuce Posted November 29, 2004 Posted November 29, 2004 If your cache page is in HTML you can enter lines in your description areas like this: <! Your text here > and they can only be seen in edit mode.

You wouldn't want anybody to have access to coordinates for multi/puzzle caches, or hints.

Actually I have a puzzle cache which can only be solved by looking at the source, as the cache coords are in HTML comments.
+The Jester Posted November 29, 2004 Posted November 29, 2004 Actually I have a puzzle cache which can only be solved by looking at the source, as the cache coords are in HTML comments. I've seen several cache like this - one was a internet multi, you had to visit several sites, view source to find the next "waypoint" (URL). I hope I don't run in to any more of these, as I suddenly can't view source anymore - might it have something to do with SP 2?
+TotemLake Posted November 29, 2004 Posted November 29, 2004 No. You're suffering from a different problem unrelated to SP2.

If you are "full", it will not allow you to see the source for some reason,
+The Jester Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 Try clearing your temp internet files. If you are "full", it will not allow you to see the source for some reason, Thanks! That did the trick. You learn something everyday... Back on topic: Another way to handle this is with GSAK. You can add all sorts of notes to a cache listing. Most of the time when I have questions asked of a cache I don't want to go the the cache page - the amount of info I keep wouldn't fit easily in a note.
+fly46 Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 While it would be nice, I just have a file on my hard drive. It's a table and it has cache name | first set | second | Third | fourth each box has both a set of cords AND a note about the location. Ie: Under a tree, bye joe smith's grave, whatever.

The only issue with this is having access to this data when you're not at your computer. I know when I'm away from home I still have access to the internet but I'm not usually carrying all that info with me. If it were accessable from Geocaching.com, then all the info needed would be right there.
Jeremy Posted December 1, 2004 Posted December 1, 2004 It's a good request. I have considered this in the past as well, but I would suggest not making them log entries but instead just have an additional field on the cache edit page that only you (and admins) can see. The reasoning behind this is log entries should be viewable by anyone, and honestly the work behind trying to hide these from prying eyes would take more work than its worth (imagine if pocket queries accidentally revealed this info!).

That would be great. I don't care if it's a log entry or a field on the cache page that only I (and approvers) can see. We probably need this anyway for multis, as whenever I submit a multi for approval and don't put the intermediate waypoints, I get asked anyway for them. May as well keep it persistent.

May as well keep it persistent. That line there struck me as a great benefit of an owner/admin-only section of the cache page, if this were a required field for any multi/mystery cache. The benefit to me, as the cache owner, wouldn't be much. I keep all my pertinent cache information on a single document that is easier for me to refer to than viewing a myriad of various cache pages. The benefit to me, as a hypothetical approver, would be that I'd have each stage of every multi-cache and the final coordinates of every mystery cache, immediately available if someone ever reported a concern with one of the stages, or if I was concerned a new cache might be too close to a stage of an existing multi-cache.
