+Cowsmith Posted November 27, 2004 Posted November 27, 2004 I've found an item that I would love to use as a travel bug. It's smaller than a softball and weighs several pounds. I'm just curious to hear about the heaviest bugs out there. Anyone have any stories? Quote
+IV_Warrior Posted November 27, 2004 Posted November 27, 2004 Cindy (The CinderBlock) evil 14lb bug There's two to get you started. Quote
+Cowsmith Posted November 27, 2004 Author Posted November 27, 2004 Well my idea is definitely lighter than the Car. That is a very cool idea. Thanks for the responses. Quote
+the hermit crabs Posted November 27, 2004 Posted November 27, 2004 Although certainly lighter than a cinder block or a car, The Mask of Geocaching Mysteries is the heaviest bug we've ever found that will actually fit inside a regular-sized cache. We didn't weigh it, but it's pretty hefty -- a thick solid brass. A few pounds, I'd guess. It's the kind of thing that you could easily see being used as the murder weapon in a tv cop show. (Here's a picture of it with a 30-cal ammo can, to show relative sizes: Quote
hunter-bob Posted November 27, 2004 Posted November 27, 2004 22lbs Pavement Stone I'd pass this one up! Quote
Rupert2 Posted November 28, 2004 Posted November 28, 2004 Weighing in at 15 lbs is my TB...Chain Chomp Quote
+Cowsmith Posted November 29, 2004 Author Posted November 29, 2004 Chain Chomp is almost up in my neck of the woods. I'd go out of my way to grab him. One thing I have to say that I am relieved to see is that most people seem to think these heavy bugs are cool. I was worried that the idea might get greeted with a lot of "Why would you want to do that?" sort of attitude. Now I just have to figure out how exactly how I want to attach the Travel Bug tag. I'm sure I can figure it out. Thanks for the replies. Quote
+Cowsmith Posted December 1, 2004 Author Posted December 1, 2004 Your phone bug begs the question "What is the biggest bug?". But that is a topic for another thread. If Chain Chomp makes it to Upper Michigan, I'll be going after it. Quote
+planetrobert Posted December 2, 2004 Posted December 2, 2004 evil 14lb bug That is my FAVORITE heavy TB Quote
Rupert2 Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 I've decided to turn a decomissioned public pay phone into a travel bug. I am so there. Where can I find it? That is an awesome idea! Quote
+welch Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 would a lead brick be considered dangerous? Quote
+IV_Warrior Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 I've decided to turn a decomissioned public pay phone into a travel bug. It weighed about 40 pounds or so until I took it apart (completely) and stripped out all the insides. It weighs considerably less now that its insides have been replaced with styrofoam but it's still kinda bulky. I don't care if it actually travels far or whatever just as long as people enjoy it. That'd make a great urban "regular" cache Why hide a micro when you can "hide" a hollowed out payphone right in plain sight? Quote
+Snoogans Posted December 3, 2004 Posted December 3, 2004 Weighing in at 15 lbs is my TB...Chain Chomp OK! THAT is by far one of the coooooolest TB's I ever saw. Got a watch on it now. Quote
+welch Posted December 4, 2004 Posted December 4, 2004 would a lead brick be considered dangerous? I don't think so, at least from my end. But there is a possibility that lead could be somewhat poisonous. Why not something really heavy like a boulder or a piece of a poured concrete sidewalk? Or heck, go all out and take a section of highway! *** Just ideas! Don't actually attempt the sidewalk or highway bugs! *** density... could use a sidewalk, but thats just big. a brick could still be several pounds and fit in an ammo can. gold would work too, but someone would keep it. How cheap can I get a nice softball sized moon rock? Quote
Rupert2 Posted April 15, 2005 Posted April 15, 2005 Woah! I just picked up this bug last night. She weighs between 15 and 20 pounds but is surprisingly compact. Check out some of the pics in the logs. VERY cool concept... Iron Snake Quote
+Tharagleb Posted April 15, 2005 Posted April 15, 2005 (edited) There is this one which was on top of Spruce Mtn in VT, the last I heard... [Edit, typo] [Ditto] Edited April 15, 2005 by Tharagleb Quote
+Perfect Tommy Posted April 15, 2005 Posted April 15, 2005 If your talking about heaviest bugs that can actually fit in a regular cache, then Hammerhead is the heaviest one I've encountered. Here's a picture of the bug which is an ax/hammer head: Pound for pound though, my own bug, Chip Off the Old Block, carries some heft. The bug was cleaved from a 28 pound lead brick. Here's the brick and the chip: Quote
+baja_Traveler Posted April 16, 2005 Posted April 16, 2005 density...could use a sidewalk, but thats just big. a brick could still be several pounds and fit in an ammo can. gold would work too, but someone would keep it. How cheap can I get a nice softball sized moon rock? Gold? If you make a golden travel bug, please place it in my cache. I don't know about using a moon rock for a TB, I think that this would get taken since it in itself has great value since it is from the moon. Why not take an ordinary rock and paint it anc call it a moon rock? Well, that gives me an idea! I found this rock a year ago in Half Moon Bay and brought it home. i naturally called it the "Moon Rock". It even has holes to run a chain through...weighs about 18 lbs Quote
+Bob Blaylock Posted April 16, 2005 Posted April 16, 2005 I was just thinking of creating a very small black hole (about the size of a golf ball) and making it into a travel bug. Quote
+geologyrox Posted April 16, 2005 Posted April 16, 2005 I was just thinking of creating a very small black hole (about the size of a golf ball) and making it into a travel bug. LOL - i'd travel for that =P Quote
Connor's Clan Posted April 20, 2005 Posted April 20, 2005 I have to thank all of you. I have not laughed this hard in a while. Awesome TBs! The Phone and the Toilet need to be caches instead of TBs. I am just picturing a the john sitting out in the middle of the woods, you lift the seat and there it is; "log" your entry! The rest are priceless. I might just have to drive up to VT and grab that frog/patio block thang, bring it down here to MA so it can get heft around a bit. I think that I am up to the challenge! Roar Quote
+kingsting Posted April 26, 2005 Posted April 26, 2005 This heavy little bugger was at a weekend event. The Third Rail of Geocaching Quote
