4 Wheelin' Event Cache In Mammoth

Hi,

I'll be back in Mammoth in mid July visiting geocachers MtnFrog and Camel. (Sis & Bro-in-law)

Would anyone be interested in having an event followed by a mass assault on my Offroad Adventure Caches the following day?

You will need a 4wd, Enduro, or Dirt Bike to get to all of the caches.

The time to beat so far is 10 hours and 55 minutes, set by Ranboze last August. She and bthomas are the ONLY cachers to complete the series. Anyone who beats the time will have the BONUS CACHE named after them.

Any takers?

Hey Snoogans!  Keep me posted... if there's an "event", maybe I'll drive on up for it!

I'll be posting an Event for Minaret Vista regardless of any takers on the 4WD run. (I had an event there last year. Only 2 people, other than MtnFrog, showed up and they never logged the find.) It will be in mid July and I'll try to get it posted by mid June or earlier.

BTW- MtnFrog and I will be placing a few more caches in choice spots.

I'm going to do a maintenance run to see how quickly it's possible to run the OAC's. I think I can do it in about 5 hours. I seriously doubt anyone else could.

Rest assured. If anyone goes for it, they'll get no help from me. :(

Allow me to quote the guidelines:

Event Caches

... an event cache should not be set up for the sole purpose of drawing together cachers for an organized hunt of another cache or caches.  Such group hunts are best organized using the forums or an email distribution list.

I don't want you to be surprised by that later :(

oh ooo.... guess that party might be over - would still be great to get together up there. We might be heading up in July ourselves. Been about 2 years since we have gone there (even though we have family in town - sister-in-law (Mammoth), father in-law lives in Bishop as well.)

Thanks. I'm fully aware of the guidelines. That's why the hunt would be, as stated previously, the NEXT day. Thus, it is not the sole purpose of having the event. Any time groups of cachers get together to discuss geocaching that wouldn't normally meet otherwise, it's an event. IMO. I agree that it shouldn't be just to organize a hunt.

My adventure cache series would be 6 finds in and of themselves. 7 counting the virt. There is no need of a group smiley for that as well. I merely thought that the event would be a good excuse for people without the proper equipment to buddy up with those that have room in their 4wd vehicles. There's only room for me on my 600R.

I plan to hold the event regardless of anyone wanting to go offroad the next day.

Oh, sorry, I missed that. Carry on.

When you get the event posted I'll put it on my watch list. I don't know if we could make it, but I think it would be fun. I love that area and have never been there during the summer. Regarding your adventure series: Do you think my AWD Saturn Vue is up to the task, or is it too urban of an SUV to handle it?

Humm, this sounds familiar. Where have I heard this before? That's right. It was this posting. That 6 inch ground clearance was a minimum. Actual terrain may vary. Void where prohibited.

Q. What's the difference between a Four Wheel Drive and a Rental Car??

A. There's some places you just shouldn't take a Four Wheel Drive.

If this event is half of the GBES Navigational Rally, I say sacrifice the Saturn and you'll still have a blast. Go for it.

Most roads are suitable for Saturn clearance, being Forest Service roads on packed pumice or crushed granite, except the one out past Minaret Summit _may_ have some buckets in pumice, and the one up beautiful Laurel Creek is steep and has granite buckets (class 3-4).

The road up Laurel scares the willies outta me and I do it on a motorcycle. I can't imagine doing it on 4 wheels. I think the the term "nutted up" applies here. One wrong turn in some places could have you end over end for the better portion of 1,000 feet. I'll stick to two wheels, although I saw one guy smoke up Laurel like it was nuthin' on a 4 wheel ATV.

Ranboze said it best. It's a black diamond 4wd run if ever there was one.

I won't mention where, but if one continues past one cache towards a scenic lake, there is a remarkable hairpin turn on a cliff: A misjudgement in the Y-turn distance will result in LOV, loss of vehicle. Best suited to a short vehicle, like a Yellow Jeep.

LOL! I learned a valuable lesson on the left fork of that "Y." I hike down now. ;)

When are you posting your Santa Fe event cache?

Right before I leave for Mammoth, or as soon as I get the details worked out.

My sister moved to a nicer part of Santa Fe and there is a park behind her house. She wants to have it there, but she needs to buy a GPS to mark it for me. (She still hasn't gotten off her butt to start caching on her own. ) Otherwise we'll do the same park as last time.

Hi, I've been in AZ for 5 years now and Copper Creek is one of my favorite sites. Getting to Copper Creek is fairly routine for standard vehicles...going up past the mining operations to where the Post Office was (stairs leading nowhere) requires some ground clearance to get over a fairly large rock in the road.

I talked the other day to an old timer from Mammoth who was at the casino I work at. I've been out there 3 times and have heard of a road that ran from Klondyke to Copper Creek. The old timer said that road (loosely using road here) starts a couple of miles short of Copper Creek and heads left past an old ranch. It should end up a couple of miles north of the Klondyke general store. From there you're only 50 miles from civilization on a dirt road ending near Thatcher AZ.

If anyone can confirm this, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Jim Handy

There is one admin for southern california... well, from about Monterey on down, which is quite far north if you ask me, and he's on a well deserved vacation right now. There is a new admin but this admin just came on board and Im not sure what gets sent to him/her versus the other california admin who is handling ALL of california right now. We patiently wait....

Have fun in Mammoth. I'll be off 4x4'n on the trails surrounding Lake Tahoe. I'll be doing some caching that weekend, just not your series unfortunately. I wish I could because I think I could break that 10hr challenge. B)

Sorry I won't get a chance to meet you. Sadly, the event may never happen. It seems there are some "issues." :D
