Cache Placement

We are pondering about placing a cache on Ordinary Point at Sassafrass River in Maryland. The problem is that there is no accessibility by land. Would this pass as a eligble cache?

Yes it would. There are many island caches out there. Just make sure you rate it 5 stars for terrain, as it requires special equipment (boat, raft, canoe, etc...),

There are many of these in Northern Ontario and they are great. Like already stated just make sure you properly describe the cache.

Here's a cool one we did in the San Juan Islands, unfortunately now archived. There are many more everywhere you can think of, I'm sure.

I've been thinking of a cache in the middle of a local stream - about 100ft wide - which can be waded. people come to a particular spot to cool off during the summer. My issue is finding a container that is really watertight because I would be weighting it and putting it in the water.

 

I would also like to hear experiences of people that have hiddden or found such a cache.

For an underwater cache, the Bison Cylinders work. I had one as an underwater cache and it stayed dry. Room for a log only though.

 

Ammo boxes have also been used for underwater caches. If you have one with a good seal, it should work. Get a .30 cal. Less to leak.

The most watertight container on the planet will get wet inside eventually. Someone won't close it properly, get some sand in a seal or drop the thing into the water. One cache I did didn't try to stay watertight. It was an open wire type of box with a diving slate for a logbook and trade items that didn't have to stay dry.

 

Then you can always make it a multi stage cache by posting a container with coordinates painted on it for the second location which is on dry land of course.

Here's another one in Maryland that I did a while back that required a 12 mile kayak trip. Unfortunately, a large tree had blown down and buried the cache. As you can see, this cache is not very active as it is a bit remote.

try gluing a threaded end cap on one end of a piece of pvc pipe and a plain old end cap on the other put a roll of thread tape in the cache to reseal the seal becomes damaged (In response to WalruZ)

I placed this cache at the end of a gentle 4 mile canoe trip along the Snake River. I never imagined that people would scramble down a 200 foot cliff, then bushwhack 2 miles through thistles, stinging nettles and poison ivy just to get there. But they did.
