Release Notes (Website: Tech migrations) - February 26, 2024

Recommended Posts

This is probably a small thing in the great scheme of things, but previously, when viewing my own finds from my profile, the third-last column said "Found on" to correspond with the dates being those on which I made the find, but now, even though the dates are still my find date, the column heading is "Last found".

All pages that moved to the more modern tech stack will no longer display the message indicator. Can you please fix it, thanks.

For example the My Lists page (moved) without the message indicator:

And for example the dashboard page (not moved) with the message indicator:

Possibly related, and the timing is roughly the same...  On my high-res big tablet with Brave in desktop mode, and oddly portrait only, the big green band at the top stops well short of my user icon; there's just white space in between.  The Message clickable belongs in there, but it's missing too.  But if there's a new message, there's a telltale yellow dot in that white space, and I've learned to know what it means.

And if I want the message center, a blind click on the missing icon's likely location usually works.  So does typing "mess" in the address bar, and accepting the first suggestion.

No biggie; I know you've got some bigger fish to fry...

In lists (bookmark and ignore) the displayed distance value less than 1km/mi is wrong.

For distances greater or equal to 1km/mi it is correct.

Appended are two screenshots that show the issue when comparing the same results in bookmark list and search:

the first three caches are less than 1 km away from the home coordinates (in this case HQ), but show distances in the bookmark list that are too high by a factor of 1000.

With the latest release 20240417.1.281 there are additional issues on the new search page:

  1. in found by and hidden by results the archived caches are missing completely;
this is especially visible if you search for your own finds - then the find count is pretty off:
    https://www.geocaching.com/play/results?hf=0&asc=false&sort=foundDate

    see also these forum posts:
    https://forums.geocaching.com/GC/index.php?/topic/400247-archived-geocaches-not-showing/
    and
    https://forums.geocaching.com/GC/index.php?/topic/400264-list-of-caches-hidden-by-a-user-doesnt-show-archived-ones/
  2. it's no more possible to change the page size:
    image.png.b9465e58b00029bdef7380412d52169f.png
even if you can select a different size nothing happens
  3. title of the Last found / Found on column header is mixed up (also reported here: https://forums.geocaching.com/GC/index.php?/topic/397274-release-notes-website-tech-migrations-february-26-2024/&do=findComment&comment=6141199):

I'm not sure if this has been reported already, as so many search-related things are now broken it's hard to keep track of them, but when searching by, say, Placed Date:

image.thumb.png.dcfebd373153d2e266d1a3531314847b.png

when selecting anything other than the first page, it reverts to sorting by distance from home:

image.thumb.png.c91595a4b92fcf5a3993df464e5b1043.png

If I then try to reselect sorting by placed date, it goes back to page 1.

The same thing happens when ordering by any column other than Distance, it's impossible to get beyond page 1.

It's even "better":

If you change the sorting in a search result, say from "Placed on" to "Distance", then step through the pages one by one, the sorting alternates page by page:

- 1st page: "Distance"

- 2nd page: "Placed on"

- 3rd page: "Distance"

- 4th page: "Placed on"

- ...

Same happens if you change the actual sorting from ascending to descending or vice versa.

The only way to get proper results is to change the sorting, then reload the page.

Now the sorting is kept when stepping through the pages.

We released an update that fixes the following issues:

  • Users getting taken back to the top of page 1 after editing de description of a List item. The focus now stays on the page the edited item was on.
  • List name descriptions now respect line breaks and wrap properly.
  • Searching for nearby caches on a cache listing now correctly uses the coordinates of the cache, not the home coordinates of the user.
  • The menu to select how many caches from the search result should be displayed per page is now working correctly.

Thanks for your updates. Appreciated!

I noticed that despite the fact that the user is not taken to the top of the FIRST page anymore, the user is still taken to the top of the same page everytime the description of a list item is updated rather than the page staying in that same (scrolled down) position. Is that intended?

* EDIT *

That seems to be resolved now, many thanks for your fix :-)

This issue, which I also reported on the 10th April, remains outstanding and it's becoming quite a while since any updates were posted here.

As part of this technical migration, we have made a small update to Geocaching search functionality so that results for user finds and hides show archived caches consistently, based on membership level. This update aligns the search behavior from https://www.geocaching.com/play/search and https://www.geocaching.com/play/results with the existing behavior on Profile-page geocache searches.

Search Behavior Updates:

  • Search filters: ‘Found by me’, ‘Caches I own’, ‘Hidden by me’
    • In addition to active caches, applying any of these filters now also returns archived caches
  • ‘Found by’ another player
    • This is a Premium-member-only filter. In addition to active caches, applying this filter now returns archived caches.
  • ‘Hidden by’ another player
    • Basic members will continue to see results with active caches only.
    • Premium members: In addition to active caches, applying this filter now returns archived caches.
  • Search filter chips:
    • When the search results contain active and archived caches, an ‘Active or archived’ filter chip now appears.
    • You can dismiss this filter chip to see active geocaches only.
  • Players' privacy settings that determine if others may view their finds (public, friends, private) remain unaffected by this update. The visibility of other players' finds will depend on their chosen privacy settings.

As part of our ongoing technical migration, we've streamlined the display of Geocaching search results. The Difficulty and Terrain columns are now combined into a single "D/T" column. This change, which aligns with the updated List details pages, helps to reduce the space these columns take up on the page.
