Finding Caches in US Counties

Just wondering if there is a list of the cachers who have found a cache in the most US counties?  I'm at 341 of 3142 and wanted to know where I stacked up.

Thanks,

Here's a thread that will provide some information for you.  To my knowledge, IndyMagicMan was the only one who had found a cache in each US county (or the equivalent in some states) in the continental US as of 2016 but there were certainly others that were working on it.

Total counties is available on project-gc

https://project-gc.com/Statistics/TopCountyFinders?profile_country=United+States&country=United+States&submit=Filter

There is someone listed with 3141 out 3142.

I am assuming they are missing Kalawao county in Hawaii.

(oops - too slow on the link so more info)

Summary:

148 at over 1000 US counties

876 at over 500 US counties

1966 at over 341 US counties

Note - it has the original poster listed at 340 counties.

Yep.  Their logs on the Alaska Borough and Census Area Challenge tell the story.

That's some dedication.  In many states it appears they limited themselves to one find per county.

After going through all that, I'd want to snag as many "all counties in [state]" challenges as I could, but they only have Alaska.  To each their own, I suppose.

Huh; this was an interesting statistic! The numbers are much lower than I might have guessed. I'm sitting at 935 counties. I figured there would be at least a couple thousand people with more than me (based on general interest in the hobby) but I'm sitting at 176.

New goal for 2020... break into the top 100!

Maybe there's a tie? GSAK might place you at the top of a 5 way tie and Project-GC could put you at the bottom of one.

Just a thought.

Project-GC and GSAK are using different county border files. Five caches on a border's edge might fall into different counties then.

It seems they are using very different county border files.  Project-GC says a total of 3142, GSAK say 3148.  Anybody willing to go thru state by state to see where the differences lie?

I know project-gc and Groundspeak disagree on which state GC2018 is in.

That pops up for us on the challenge checkers and effects our county count.

I am not sure what GSAK uses but the first few things I would check are:

1. Does GSAK include American Samoa, Puerto Rico, Guam, Northern Mariana, American Virgin islands, and Minor Outlying Islands (My guess)?

2. Alaska

3. Louisiana

No, those are listed as their own separate "countries" for caching purposes.  You can go to the old seek page (still a valuable tool for searching, though the newer search page is of course extremely useful) and use the "by Country" menu to see the list of all territories; it contains those.

GSAK looks at corrected coordinates. Very possible that some mystery caches have their published coordinates in one county, and the final coordinates in another. This could account for a difference between GSAK and Project GC.
