+BikeBill
I've been really pleased with my 64s but I think I've found a bug. In the Geocaching profile the unit has the ability to let me input the additional stages of a multi-cache but the GPS will either freeze or show a gray screen when I try to do this. It doesn't misbehave all the time but will most often do it when I am entering stages beyond the second. I hadn't done many multi's lately but today I did a 4-stage and had the unit freeze several times. It happens just as I put in the last digit of the coord's and hit okay. Then the only way to un-freeze it is to pop out the batteries. Then I have to pull up the cache and input the extra stage all over again. Has anyone else had a problem like this on their 64 series? Any solutions? And does someone know the most effective way to communicate with Garmin about problems like this? Quote Link to comment
+Mineral2
Are you running the latest firmware? Quote Link to comment
+BikeBill
Yes, I'm upgraded to 4.0 but I had the same problem with earlier versions. Quote Link to comment
+Red90
Most likely a bad GPX file. Delete all GPX files and load up a single multi and see if it still happens. Quote Link to comment
+JohnCNA
Bill, I've not had crashes with multis and my 64s, but I use a different method than you do. I always use the Mark Waypoint button to enter the next waypoint(s) in a multi. It's an old habit, carried over from a previous device. But it's just as easy as 'enter next stage', I think. Never had a crash doing it that way. Quote Link to comment

I think if you put it in as a waypoint you will have to change your compass dashboard....I normally use the geocaching detail dashboard but I change it if I put a cache in as a waypoint ( for a puzzle or multi ) so the needle will point to my waypoint and not the next closest cache on my list. Yes, that's correct. For that reason I never use the Geocaching dashboard. Quote Link to comment
+BikeBill
I have been using the Geocaching profile almost exclusively unless I have to project a waypoint. I guess I'll have to get in the habit of switching out when I do a multi but I wish Garmin would fix this glitch instead. Edited August 24, 2015 by BikeBill Quote Link to comment
+Nocturnx
Which dashboard do you use instead of the geocaching dashboard? Quote Link to comment
+Timpat
Recreational is my full-time dashboard. Its simply a user preference. Quote Link to comment
+BikeBill
I was out today and did some two stage caches. The second set of coord's loaded fine. Just to test the unit, I entered a third set twice. Both times it froze the unit like before. It either freezes the current screen or goes to a 'gray screen' and locks up. Either way, I have to pop a battery out to re-boot. I wonder if I have a defective 64s or if it's a bug. I was hoping someone here could tell me if they've encountered the same thing. I like to use the Geocaching profile and think the unit should work as intended. Quote Link to comment
+Red90
I would first follow my suggestion above as bad GPX data has been causing frozen units for many years. I will try to remember and try a few multis on my 64S tonight and see if I can get it to freeze when entering multiple waypoints. Quote Link to comment
+on4bam
Does a 64 "remember" the coordinates for each WP you put in "Next stage"? If not then there's an even better reason for marking WPs. I only use the geocaching dashboard when going for a traditional or mystery with corrected coordinates. All other times I use "small datafields" with Distance to destination, Trip odometer, avg. total speed and speed. This is on an Oregon 600 but I guess a 64 has similar software. Quote Link to comment

I normally use the "small datafields" dashboard and the GPS DOES freeze up when entering a second new waypoint. It does not (so far)exhibit this bug when using the "geocaching" dashboard. +Red90
Okay. I just tried entering four or five next stage waypoint on a multi and had no problem. Tried from the map screen and the geocaching and geocaching detail dashboard. Used direct routing. No lockups. Like I say, rule out a bad GPX first. All it takes is one bad cache somewhere on the unit. Quote Link to comment
+BikeBill
Do corrupt ggz files cause problems like gpx files do? The reason I ask is that I deleted all the gpx fles on the unit and only use ggz. I'm still having the problem of the unit locking up on anything past a 2-stage. Quote Link to comment
+BikeBill
Dragging up an old topic here. It's been nearly a couple years since I originally posted my complaint about my 64s locking up when loading more than one additional waypoint for a multi. Has anyone found a way to fix or get around the problem? I haven't had my 64s lock up like that since, let me think, TODAY! Twice! Quote Link to comment
+xen00nex
Today was the first time looking for a multi-cache with my 64ST and this happened to me. Only way to stop it is to pull the batteries. I tried getting to it different ways but it just kept locking up. Quote Link to comment

I always just create a waypoint for subsequent stages of a multi. I've never had a problem with that method on my 64st. Quote Link to comment
+xen00nex
Mine locks up just selecting it. I thought someone suggested changing the profile to "Recreational", which I did and I can at least see the first stage now. Quote Link to comment
