+Matt Tracker 1 Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 A local phonebox near where I live (the typical red British one) has been transformed into a sort of public information/library booth, which led me to think "what an excellent place for a cache!" Anyway, I was just wondering how I would go about hiding it and getting permission for it (I was just thinking of getting a big notebook with the geocaching symbol on so people would know what to look for.) Cheers Quote

Cheers Don't hold me to this as I'm not 100% but I think you should be okay if your local council doesn't mind geocaches...I know that BT do not wish geocaches to be placed in their operational phone boxes but if this isn't one of those then I'd go for it Quote
+Yorkshire Yellow Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 There's a few like this in my area, such as this one called Frocester Library and another called Sail James Patterson sail. Most of the ones I've seen are where decommissioned phone boxes have been bought by a third party, usually the local Parish Council. I'd start by tracking them down, and then approaching the Clerk to the Council. Quote
+Graculus Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 It is correct you cannot place caches in current BT phone boxes (see this entry in the UK Geocaching Wiki) but old decommissioned boxes are fine. As for permission? As suggested, try the local parish council. If you do put such a cache in place please make sure you explain in a reviewer note when you submit the cache it is a decommissioned one and not an active BT one. Otherwise you'll get the cache back again with a polite note pointing out you can't put caches in BT phone boxes Chris Graculus Volunteer UK Reviewer for geocaching.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- UK Geocaching Wiki Geocaching.com Help Center UK Geocaching Information & Resources website Quote
+Simply Paul Posted March 20, 2014 Posted March 20, 2014 You might consider making the cache a Book Crossing site too. Could be an easier sell to the council that way as they might be familiar with the idea? Quote
BOBBLES WORLD TOUR Posted March 22, 2014 Posted March 22, 2014 I was just thinking of getting a big notebook with the geocaching symbol on so people would know what to look for.) Cheers That's a great idea. a caching logbook hidden amongst the Mills & Boons. A good way for cachers to actually hunt for their smiley. Fave point already awarded from me. Quote
+castagnari Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 I was just thinking of getting a big notebook with the geocaching symbol on so people would know what to look for. Nice idea ..... but ...... A traditional cache consists of at least a container and logbook http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx#traditional Quote
+Happy Humphrey Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 The obvious idea is to hollow out the inside of a book and put the log book inside. Then you have a container with log book. To make it a bit better you could replace the spine with a custom-made one. Quote
+Simply Paul Posted March 23, 2014 Posted March 23, 2014 Phone Box. Box. The clue is in the name. List it as a Large cache. If logbooks in waterproof bags are ok, and they seem to be as a bag is a (minimal) container that protects the log - the point of a container - then why isn't a waterproof, walk-in box acceptable? There are shipping container caches (well, at least one); another waterproof, walk-in box. Ditto garages and other 'outsized' caches. I'm calling for a stewards' enquiry on this one! Quote

+redsox_mark Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 If you use a box file like Box File then you could put a separate logbook inside it. (As well has have room for swaps). Or has previously mentioned a real book hollowed out with the log inside. Quote
BOBBLES WORLD TOUR Posted March 24, 2014 Posted March 24, 2014 How about hiding it within this fine tome. Quote

SpartanFoxes Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 Fab idea! I wish I had one of these repurposed telephone boxes near me! Quote
+little-leggs Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 I've found a couple of caches hidden in OLD phone boxes that have been turned in to Library's I too thought what a great idea, and as there is to such boxes near me I went about getting promotion I managed to speak directly to the head of each village comity and both said "NO" the reason given was "they didn't want strangers in the villages , which might take the book's and not replace / swap them " , " just sell um on e-bay " hence I haven't been able to locate any cache's in them . Why don't you hold an event in their village pub. That'll make these small minded fools somewhat jittery I'd suspect. God forbid if a non Anglo-Saxon should turn up. Quote
+Matt Tracker 1 Posted April 4, 2014 Author Posted April 4, 2014 Got a reply from the local parish council today and they said it's all cool. I'll post some photos and the cache page for any interested. Quote

+Simply Paul Posted April 26, 2014 Posted April 26, 2014 Nice - reminded me of the Unst bus shelter I got a dubious FTF on that one. Amazing location and I even got to meet the famous Bobby and his charming mum. Hard to believe it was 5 years ago Quote
+Oxford Stone Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Love it! The only one of these library phone boxes I've seen is in Thruxton (off A303). Quote
+SidAndBob Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I had a short-lived cache like this called The Phone Book. See if you can find it here for a virtual find. And no, you can't log it. Quote
