+IFR GPS Posted December 1, 2002 Posted December 1, 2002 Although really not that odd, considering the way some towns are laid out, but it recently caught my eye. Do a TOPOZONE search for 48d 11.4 N / 114d 18.6 W, and observe the pentagon/pentagram around the courthouse. Quote

waferdog Posted December 6, 2002 Posted December 6, 2002 Can you figure out where this? http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=11&x=1108&y=7852&z=17&w=1 Also, check out the topo map for this location from 1977. It's changed a bit since then. Waferdog Quote
+Zinnware Posted December 7, 2002 Posted December 7, 2002 This is a little off topic, but here is an Aerial photo that captured a twin engine plane flying over Lake Marburg at Codorus State Park in Pennsylvania. http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=10&x=1683&y=22032&z=18&w=1 The plane is flying near the Wildasin Meeting House Cache. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=41584 Quote
Danger Posted December 13, 2002 Posted December 13, 2002 quote:Some stories claim that nearby Ape Cave received its name from Bigfoot sightings in the area. Actually, the APE caves were named after a local climbing group, but I don't remember what the acronym stands for now. Quote
isagreen Posted January 5, 2003 Posted January 5, 2003 This is not on any topo maps but you can see it on aerial maps. The story goes that during WWII a P.O.W from Germany was being held on Coronado Navy base in San Diego and he was an engineer he was ask by the navy to design bachelor enlisted quarters and as you can see from the photos his design. http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.aspx?t=1&s=11&x=1213&y=9038&z=11&w=1 Quote

+WaldenRun Posted January 15, 2003 Posted January 15, 2003 OK, in NY, there is a virtual cache called The Sultan of Swat. I have mapped the listed coordinates (green dot) on the topo below. They give the location of the grave of a VERY famous baseball player. Does the circular formation to the SW bring anything to mind? -WR "Why worry when you can obsess?" Quote
+Chichikov Posted February 16, 2003 Posted February 16, 2003 A number of years ago a friend who worked in the map room at the University of Vermont library showed me a topo map from the late '50s that had a "UFO landing zone" on it. It was from somewhere in Nevada (Nellis? Area 51?). It wasn't on the next revision that came out a decade or so later. I'm going to have to contact her to see if I can get the specifics on this map. It was pretty funny. --------------- Where am I going? I don't quite know. What does it matter where people go? Down to the wood where the blue-bells grow- Anywhere, anywhere. I don't know. -A.A. zdv Posted March 13, 2003 Posted March 13, 2003 This thread is awesome. Sure enough, I searched through my DeLorme Idaho atlas and found an "easter egg". Very subtle and funny the way they placed it - I like it! Quote
+jeannine Posted March 14, 2003 Posted March 14, 2003 this isn't on a topo map ...but i worked on an intersection beautification in Albany where we added a landscaped bullnose ...i laid out the plantings and it wasn't until i did the rendering for a public info meeting that i realized i had drawn a pretty accurate picture of bozo the clown ...no one at the meeting noticed ..although i had to hold back laughter every time i saw it. AlphaOp Posted April 7, 2003 Posted April 7, 2003 I was just looking in a book on maps, and there have been instances where nonexistant towns were inserted in maps. Two examples were given in an area around Chicago, they were both refrences to the City's basketball team or something. Still kinda interesting.
