  1. WaldenRun has 1,499 finds and he doesn't use a GPSr , just some truly impressive skill with a map and compass. I mention this because even though I prefer my 60CS with accuracy to three decimal places, it is possible to cache very well without.
  2. Wow, tough crowd. Should I have called it "gently used" instead of " a year and a half old"? If I called it brand new you wouldn't know the difference since there isn't a scratch on it. I just stumbled across my suction cup dashboard mount that I'm throwing in with it. That and the cable are freebies - I'm just looking for an offer on the etrex.
  3. I'm selling my trusty etrex Legend. It's about a year and a half old and is in perfect condition. Updated with the most recent firmware. The PC serial cable I'm including also has a cigarette lighter adapter if you want external power for the unit in your car. E-mail me a reasonable offer; I'll ship it for free. Cheers, Rick (chichikov)
  4. I just got my 60CS this afternoon and this happened on my very first trip out with it. It slid across the dashboard and turned off. I had this happen when I first got my eTrex Legend and I solved the problem by pulling out the batteries and stretching out the terminals inside the case so the batteries would fit tighter. I just did the same with the 60CS; time will tell whether it solves the problem or not. I wish there was a spring terminal inside, not just flimsy pieces of thin metal...
  5. I was earning around $13,000 a year when I bought my GPS. By just about any measure I could have claimed hardship. It was an item I wanted so I tucked away a bit of money here and there until I had enough to buy it. I'd be happy to part with some of my income to provide necessities to someone in true need, but a GPSr doesn't qualify as a necessity IMHO. --------------- Where am I going? I don't quite know. 6. Nope. I know how high I am without looking at my GPSr. --------------- Where am I going? I don't quite know. What does it matter where people go? Down to the wood where the blue-bells grow Anywhere, anywhere. I don't know. -A.A. Milne
  7. I've bought a couple of cables on eBay and paid around $15 for each of them. Good quality, work fine. --------------- Where am I going? I don't quite know. What does it matter where people go? Down to the wood where the blue-bells grow Anywhere, anywhere. I don't know. -A.A. Milne

    0-for-2

My first time out I couldn't find the cache either. I was on the shore of Casco Bay in Portland, ME and the GPS was showing that the cache site was about 100 ft. out into the water. I didn't believe that, so I spent about an hour crawling all over huge granite blocks on the sea wall and still came up skunked. Decided to go try the next one and found myself walking down a residential street and almost up someone's driveway instead of the park it was supposed to be in because the GPS told me to. It suddenly occurred to me that I had read somewhere (the manual? these forums?) that there were different datums used. I checked the unit and found that it was set to something other than WGS84. I changed the setting and went a-hunting again and found the cache. Went back to the first one and found that one too. I rarely RTFM, so I had to slap myself upside the head for missing this fairly important info before heading out. --------------- Where am I going? I don't quite know. 9. Paul, Welcome. I live in Exeter and would be happy to get together to hunt some caches and help you out with your Legend (that's what I'm using, too). Drop me a line. This new dump of snow we just got ought to melt off within the next few days. --------------- Where am I going? I don't quite know. What does it matter where people go? 10. catcher24 - I should probably let Dave and Jaime explain their own comments, but I assume what they meant was that following the attacks of 9/11 when all planes in the air were grounded, many flights had to land at Gander, Newfoundland. There were a number of great stories written about the hospitality of the Newfies and how they took stranded passengers into their homes. They did the same in WWII when a lot of GIs were based there. A lot of the ties between Newfoundland and the U.S. stem from the number of marriages from this time. Also, the Gander airport gets a lot of business from planes that are forced to land due to "unruly" passengers. Now how's that for off-topic! From a federal lands warning to Newfoundland history... --------------- Where am I going? I don't quite know. What does it matter where people go? 11. WolfinSTL, I like the BlueChart series, but I wouldn’t rely on it alone when out sailing. I think of it as a useful adjunct to my paper charts. You’re right about the Garmin Topo software – it bites, at least at its current price. The maps are at 1:100,000 scale, so there’s just not enough detail there. I’m using the National Geographic TOPO maps and am very happy with them. I’ve also got Maptech Terrain Navigator (it’s essentially the same). The 1:24,000 scale gives you all the detail you need. Missouri has about 1,300 quads on 5 CDs. You can’t load the maps to your Rino, but I haven’t found that to be a problem. As Renegade Knight said, you can transfer waypoints and routes back and forth between the maps and GPSr. When I’m planning my caching trips I put all the waypoints I want on the map, then print out whichever ones I need. If you have a Pocket PC PDA you can also load the maps onto that. --------------- Where am I going? I don't quite know. What does it matter where people go? 15. I got very, very drunk after my first one. That probably won't work so well with your kids, though. I think going out for a treat sounds like a really nice thing to do. Every time I hear about people caching with their kids it makes me wish this had been around while my daughter was still young. --------------- Where am I going? I don't quite know. 16. I signed up as a charter member before I even went out to find my first cache. 23. A number of years ago a friend who worked in the map room at the University of Vermont library showed me a topo map from the late '50s that had a "UFO landing zone" on it. It was from somewhere in Nevada (Nellis? Area 51?). It wasn't on the next revision that came out a decade or so later. I'm going to have to contact her to see if I can get the specifics on this map.
