+Geo Froggy
I was looking for a spot to hide a cache and the spot I chose had a cache already there. It has no identification and only one person (couldn't decipher the name) signed the log, obviously long ago because the container was worn and the paper in the cache had turned yellow. There is no listing, I can find for it, on GCC or the other site. Can I just write a cache page saying it is a found cash and have it published as new, or what is the protocol with this. Thanks Jackie Quote Link to comment

+joranda
If it isn't listed anymore then the spot is open to you. Have fun placing your new cache. Quote Link to comment
+pppingme
Don't forget, there are 4 active cache listing services. Not listed here doesn't mean not an active listing somewhere else. Quote Link to comment

+Geo Froggy
Thanks for the replies. I wasn't going to do anything except add a new log and some swag. The container is dry and because it is worn it fits the environment much better than anything new I could fix up. I did feel like I needed to say in the description that it is a found cache though. +L0ne.R
Was there a rubberstamp in the box? If so, it is a letterbox probably listed on Atlas Quest or LBNA. Quote Link to comment

Jackie In that case, go for it. Create a new cache description and turn the geotrash into a geocache. Do some more homework first. As others have said, there are more than 2 listing sites and even if you can't find it on them, it could be a puzzle final on another site which would be even harder to find. It could even be a private cache and not listed anywhere. Just always remember that just because it isn't on geocaching.com doesn't mean it isn't there for a reason. If you do go ahead and take it over, be sure to leave some kind of contact (your gc.com ID at least) so someone can reach you if there is any issue. Quote Link to comment
+Geo Froggy
Thanks again. It is not a puzzle or letter box. I've done all the puzzles in this town and there was no indication of stamps. It has the GCC fact sheet but no information on it to id the cache. I've only checked the Garmin site, but will search for the others. We have a number of very active cachers here and I think it would have had more than one fine if it was active. Jackie Quote Link to comment

Reaching out to some of the grizzled vets in your area may give you the answer you seek. Perhaps its archived. Perhaps it was never published. I would think that SOMEONE in your area knows the story. Reaching out to an experienced local would be a good way to get to the bottom of this. Quote Link to comment
Mr.Yuck
Don't forget, there are 4 active cache listing services. Not listed here doesn't mean not an active listing somewhere else. Five. And that's USA-based only. Seeing as we're talking Blacksburg, Virginia. Don't even bring up the number of geocaching websites in the world. But there was obviously a Geocaching.com stash note in this thing. Not that they couldn't decide to archive it here, and list it only on say Navicache. Unlikely, but possible. Quote Link to comment

Five in addition to GC.com, right? Correct. Geocaching.com, Terracaching.com, Navicache.com, Opencaching.com, Opencaching.us and, probably the one Potato finder didn't know about (which has been around since 2002) gpsgames.org, all U.S. based. As well as the network of at least 12 Opencaching websites worldwide (all preceeding Garmin, and which opencaching.us is a part of) as well as a few other oddball ones, internationally. +StarBrand
Back in 1998 while poking around in some rocks on a famous rock bluff south of town, I found a 35mm film can with signatures and dates. I suppose it was my first microcache. Only not a cache. I added my name and tucked it back between the rocks. People have been leaving thier names in places for a long long time. Not neccessarily a geocache unless marked as such. Quote Link to comment
