Number of Caches in the US?

Can anyone tell me how many of the (nearly) 1.2 million caches on the site are in the US? It appears that for most countries, you can get an idea of the number by doing a search by country feature, but the US is not included in that option. I could add up each other country and subtract, but I was just curious if anyone had a decent estimate.

Thanks.

I would say that it is more than 2567.

If you use the Advanced Search page you can check each state alphabetically from Alabama (9322), Alaska (3889), Arizona (17,103)... down to Wyoming (3955)... then add them up.

I'll let you fill in the missing states. :)

You'll have to do it fairly quickly - those cache publications and archivals stop for no man!

Thanks. I was hoping I was missing a more direct way to find the answer or that someone might just be able to share a rough number.

Oh, in that case, the answer is "877,540."

I arrived at this by writing down several numbers and picking the one that I thought looked right.

I just did a 50 state survey, which I do once or twice each year to track cache placement trends. The occasion today? My home state of Pennsylvania just passed the 20,000 mark for active caches.

Unfortunately the totals are in a spreadsheet on my office computer. I did the exercise to pass the time while monitoring a long conference call. I will post the answer tomorrow when I'm at work. I just wanted to post now so that nobody else goes through the process of 51 search requests.

The most interesting trend I noticed? Explosive cache growth this year in the Southwestern states, especially Colorado.

I've always been interested in weird statistics. It will be neat to see.

I remember awhile back Loch Cache worked out a bunch of statistics such as the number of caches per person in each state, the number per square mile in each state and more. If I remember correctly, CA, even with all its caches was way down on the list and RI, the smallest state, had the most.

It would be interesting to see the stats this year compared to last. Now, who has the time to figure it all out.
