+Jonovich
Hi folks, If I set a cache and the container itself requires a code to get into that you have to guess/work out, can I still place it as a traditional as the co-ords are for the cache itself. Or do I have to make it a Puzzle cache? Cheers, Jon. Quote Link to comment
+sssss
Generally a traditional, with a higher difficulty rating. If there is work to do before hand to work out the combination it may become a puzzle. Quote Link to comment
Deceangi
Personally I'd say it was a Puzzle cache, as for a Traditional Cache all you should need to access the log book is the coordinates. Having to do anything else including reading the cache page is not a Traditional cache. Look at it this way, just the coordinates are in the GPS, you follow the arrow to the coordinates pen behind your ear ready to use. You put your hand straight on to the container, you'd expect to whip off the lid. Sign the log and put the container back and be on your way because it is listed as a Traditional cache. Now if the cache was listed as a Puzzle, you'd know from reading the page, that you would first need to solve the combination to open the box. The first option risks a lot of moans, the second option, people would already know before attempting the cache. There are quite a few puzzles active at the posted coordinates. +Jonovich
Thanks muchly for explaining that, makes sense when you think about it logically. Cheers, Jon. Quote Link to comment
+*mouse*
I'd say definately a puzzle cache as you can't just turn up and sign the log. Edited March 25, 2010 by *mouse* Quote Link to comment
+GAZ
I have a cache out at the moment that is exactly the same.....the cache is at the listed co-ords, but you need a "code" (in this case a "word") and I have it listed as a puzzle cache, but I have said in the opening lines that it is "a mystery with a hint of a puzzle". +Delta68
A similar question was asked not long ago about insisting people sign the log book when tools are required to open the cache. My opinion would be if you need something slightly unusual to open the container eg screwdriver, spanners, key on a TB, unlock code etc I'd list it as a Mystery/Puzzle However, if you can open the cache with bare hands but need special equipment to reach it eg boat, abseiling kit diving gear etc it would be a trad Mark Quote Link to comment

My own caches were put out specifically to balance the high number of puzzles in the area. My argument is that its at the top coords, therefore its a trad! So, personally, I would list it as a trad, with a significantly increased difficulty rating. You may also want to consider a cache name that implies somethign different. A canadian cacher has a series called GeoGadget#1 and so on, which require tools. Either way, insisting people sign the log book, IMHO, is a key element of the game. We have one where the log book is encased in two sheets of plastic, so you can open the cache and see the log book, but you still need to sign it! Dave Quote Link to comment
