PDA?

I have never used a PDA so I'm rather clueless about these units. I'd like to go paperless but my GPS cannot hold other than the coords. Will any PDA do? I can download the info from pocket queries to any PDA? I'm hoping to get something cheap on eBay because I'm on a limited budget. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes just about any PDA will do. Most people go for a Palm one. There are many programs out there for Geocaching. I use GSAK on my computer to further filter and refine what I load to the PDA. Also nice feature of GSAK is that it can directly download to the PDA. On the Palm I use Cachemate. This is a nice program to display the information on caches.

To find out more on GSAK go to http://www.gsak.net

I hope this helps

A Lot of people like using the palm version of CacheMate for paperless geocaching, but I tend to like the Windows Mobile version better. To me, it's easier to use.

Just about any PDA that uses WM will work. I use a Dell Axim V51 with a 512 meg CF card. I can keep a LOT of different cache databases on the card and switch between them as I go.

I have also setup a Palm 500m, 100, and a 105 with CacheMate and all three work great. I wouldn't recommend the 100 because there isn't a lot of internal memory. I would recommend the 500 like the previous reply suggested. It has the ability to use an SD card for keeping your .gpx files on.

If you already have an iPod you can use the Notes feature in your iPod to store cache notes from the .gpx files. I'm not sure how people do this from a Windows-based computer, but from my Mac, I use a program called MacCaching that uploads the info both to my gpsr and my iPod at the same time. I would guess there are Windows programs capable of doing the same thing, but you'd have to research it.

The notes are not perfect. They only have a limited amount of space, so for caches with lots of info on the cache page, sometimes they get cut off halfway. But the majority of caches load all the difficulty ratings, cache name, owner, description and hint, which is all I need.

The only downside to all this is that you have to carry two devices, which is why I'm looking at a Garmin Oregon to replace my 8-year-old-about-to-crap-out Legend.

Ditto. I use the same set-up except my PDA is a TRGPro, an old Palm clone.

I have used both cachemate and geoscout on my GPS enabled Windows mobile phone and prefer geoscout. It is much more user friendly. Just my 2 cents.

Or, for paperless, just get this:

http://www.tigergps.com/refurbpn20.html

It's all in the box, nothing else to buy, no Palm PDA, no Cachemate, no GSAK.

I'm afraid the price on that doesn't work on the limited budget I mentioned. I'm looking for a $20 or $30 solution to going paperless.

I paid 25 dollars for my Palm M500 a few weeks ago, used of the Internet.

Paperless is the way to go!!

I have a palm centro, I downloaded cache mate to it and I am now paperless. Its awesome! You get a query from geocaching.com, convert the gpx files to dbm (I think, compatible for palm) hotsynnc or email yerself the new dbm file and you have all yer caches available on yer phone.

I have an etrex yellow, download all the waypoints there and I'm good ta go! Its great! The only prob is I hafta have a Palm and a GPSr.
