Tonteldoos

Recommended Posts

Thanks Ginger... I have had people with Bakkies say that they cannot believe I went to caches with the Corsa... People have walked almost 2 kilos to get to a cache or even gone by MTB. Me I got to park withing 25 meters of it the first time... (In the dark) and the second time I parked even closer... 17 meters... Only cause I was trying to see how close I could get... and it was daytime... And I must mention it was up a mountain... LOL.

The best road I have ever drive was for the cache at Memel Escarpment... Anyone who may have done this will have a story to tell. 20km of dirt road to a place with no cell reception and roads that swallow small cars if you are not careful. I am sure I saw a Beetle down one of the crevices in the road... Haa haa. But then there are just some caches that require a hike and I am no stranger to them... So if anything a 4 star is gonna be just another fun one for me...

For goodness sake I forgot to take a log book for Mt Memory - Sterkhorn and returned a month and a bit later to put one in.... Only Rhino, Hedgehog and the Flaming Dutchman were brave enough to accompany me on that... The Corsa just didn't feel up to it...

Yes, this is a real problem. I wrote to Father Christmas and the welfare for that very same problem but for some reasons they refused to answer me.

The furthest one away is about 1400 km from me. That is real painful. But we doen some planning and we are going down to the final ones in March so we will get them all. I stayed home this Christmas but we will use our bonus to do a caching spree down in the Cape. I also hear some mountains calling my name that side.

RedGlobe is the only other person that is very close as he has two to go. He should get it in the next month or two. Urban Hunters is busy and I know that they found Amajuba and Bloedrivier and they probably found the one in Howick and in Durban as well. We will have to wait for their logs. They will also battle with the ones in Cape Town.

The only solution which I can see is to hook up with three or more cachers and share the cost of going down. It can be done during a 3 day trip.

I personally think only 3 to 5 people will make it to the final one at the town Tonteldoos. But even after the event the tonteldoos series will continue and some time in the future more will find all of them and they will be able to hunt for the ultimate one. I can not comment too much on the rules as the tonteldoos committee has agreed on them in the beginning and that is fixed and will not be changed.

Hulle se ‘n boer het altyd ‘n broek vol planne. I hope you find them all and that we see you at the final at Tonteldoos – maybe other cachers have a solution. Any suggestions?

There is nothing that stops you from contacting cachers in areas that you cannot get to and "sharing" the information [clues] of the caches that are near to them. Many people far away will never make it to Tonteldoos either, but enjoy caching just as you do. I am sure they might collude with you.

Good luck and happy caching.

Some stats on the tonteldoos series.

The festival will take place on 11 April 2009 at the village called Tonteldoos. Further details will be made available soon.

I noticed that some cachers made good progress such as Glider Slider and Urban Hunters. Keep it going. Never say “die”.

There is now 63 days left for the big one and because we have the correct date this is the truth. From now one it will be interesting to see if the heat is on and who is going through to the final ultimate cache with the big prize. The winner will have to buy one round of peach mampoer for every cacher that attends this event. If the winner refuse to co-operate then each cacher at the event will buy him one peach mampoer. No, you can not take it home – it is for immediate consumption. Option one sounds better. :D:):o

Average difficulty for all caches combined is 2.08 and the average terrain is 1.69.

The following cachers have the following clues.

Thanks for the info Gerhard. Looks interesting to say the least.

The clues for the final "Groot Skat" are in the process of being "calculated" by myself and a muggle - both of us far from the shores of South Africa. All I can say is those who are in the running for the Groot Skat had better brush up on their knowledge of ..... [oops] cannot say what right now but believe me this one will be worthy of its star rating! Did I mention what the difficulty rating will be? Sorry - no clues right now! :):D Ouch, my left hand might be involved. :o:D Keep guessing.

Cincol, you are far from here but we can do things quickly. By the way could you please forward your banking details for the bank transfer – or you would you rather ruin our friendship? Or would you rather prefer a nice case of peach mampoer? :D:D:D

In South Africa bribery is sometimes a fashion and I am wondering if it will work on your side. Eish, is that not the country where a theft could end in one hand missing? :)

Well no matter how tough you make it you will have to publish the listing at one stage or another.

The muggle that is with you – is he originally from South Africa? I would like to know his name and his title in front of his name – so I can judge the difficulty of this challenge. I have to get a couple of guys in my team if I qualify. Professor in history, specialist in the Boer wars, team of military recces for surveying the area, One IT guy with a IQ of at least 143 and a couple of guys with more than a 1000 finds – Fisheagle what are you doing during this period?

When are you planning to publish the listing? Don’t tell me it is one of the surprises. Or are you planning to keep it unpublished – only for publishing after the event. If we can’t find it then me and RedGlobe will have to taste the peach mampoer - there should be enough to drown our sorrows. :o

Can’t wait for this one.

Eish, geocahing is tough. In baseball you get three strikes and in geocaching you only get one strike. But that is the fun part of caching. Are there any special prizes for the cacher that tried but failed? :)

On a serious note – are you planning an event or just a hunt? Or are you planning for a “hunt event”?

Cincol, I appreciate your effort and I knew it will be a nice challenge. I also know that a lot of effort is going into this. I learned a lot and I should learn something more at this event. I can only say “Thank you” and we will miss you at the hunt but we will for sure think about you while searching.

By the way, should we not start with contact telephone numbers, camping site details and other info so that the cachers that want to join in the fun can plan ahead for this one. Maybe there are some cachers that want to operate a stall during this period – for example selling head ache pills, Red Bulls, Info and calming pills? Besem waar is jy – moenie dink dat jy nie daar gaan wees nie. Jy is nie verskoon nie. :o

Thanks again

Gerhard

I was hoping we could make it to the festival, but since we missed Xmas with family in PE, we will be going to there this coming Easter.

Any bets on who is going to get the final one first?

OK Serious now. I have noticed two of the caches have the same clue???? is this possible or must I revisit them? :)

TRADE I am willing to trade clues. There is no way I will be able in any series to travel to all parts of the country withing one year.

Are there any teams in the other provinces who will do a trade in clues? :(

I would realy like to see everyone attend the event and not limit it to the one or two people likely to have visited all the sites.

Yes you are quite right - a gremlin DID climb into the cache box, but that will be rectified shortly with an e-mail to the particular cachers who found that cache along with the "correct" clue. The cache owner will also be involved in the correspondence. In fact it also happened with another cache, but that was rectified some time ago. Apologies for the inconvenience but it will not affect the final outcome as everybody will have the correct clues required by the time the final cache is published.

Cincol,

Maybe we should hold a “check-in” session at Tonteldoos before the hunt start. I think if a cacher ends up in Durban he will not be impressed if he realised the cache is at Tonteldoos itself. The clues must be verified and it must be checked for accuracy and correctness before we run around. This series was active for about a year and many a gremlin can creep in.

Time is running out. We are seriously planning for our trip to Cape Town. The only real problem and frustration is that the guys in Cape Town planted so many nice caches that I do not know where to start and where to end. I am also trying to set a date to meet Cism – it will be nice to meet him for a coffee. Pity there is no event at that time.

Cincol do not ruin our friendship with the final one. :(:)

Are there any teams in the other provinces who will do a trade in clues? - Glider Slider

I am willing to consider such a solution... problem is that as far as I remember, the Tonteldoos owners discussed this at some stage and I think it was decided that this would not be allowed... It was said that only cachers who actually signed all 18 logbooks will be allowed to go for the final chase on event day.

How about some feedback here, will cachers who did not physically visit all the cache sites, but collaborated with others (let's say by means of fair exchange of clues) be able to seek the final cache? Will they be allowed the find log or even a FTF?

This could give some more cachers the opportunity to take part in the 'race for Tonteldoos Gold'.

Yet, on the other hand - others have worked hard to get all 18 clues themselves...

I currently have 6 clues and am planning to get another 3 before the Easter weekend. That's only half way.

What is the general feeling? Or rather, to not open a whole debate again... what is the standing decision on this?

I think the people that got all 18 Clues must have the chance at the FTF (going for gold). Thus give them an hour (or 2 hours) head start. Let the other teams share some clues, since we all do PAF at times, and sharing clues is like PAF.

I am one of those cachers who collected the clues by visiting all the caches in the series, and hopefully can get the last clue this weekend. :ph34r:B)

My understanding is that you may collaborate with other cachers to collect all the clues, and I do not mind if there is more teams during the event for the FTF competition. :)

This is an interesting dilemma. I believe that the FTF prize was selected by Sakkie for a specific reason. Only cachers with all 18 clues can be legible for the FTF. This is hard but this is what the majority decided on this issue.

But with fair trading of clues all other cachers should be able to participate in the event. You will need the 18 clues for the event. There is a difference in effort and it should be compensated for. A time penalty should be instituted for the various classes of finds. This could be seen as fair and just. Work on a penalty for example of 10 minutes for every cache that was not visited in persona. For example a cacher has visited physically 3 caches. He still needs to visit 15 caches personally. He has to trade his 3 clues to get 15 more clues. A time penalty of 15 x 10 minutes should thus apply. Another cacher visited 9 caches and he need to find 9 more. His penalty will be 9 x 10 minutes and he will have to trade 9 clues to get the other 9 clues. Just my personal opinion.

RedGlobe – all my sympathy for the last one. Start early drink a RedBull or two or three and take it step by step. It is a good one and it keep you in suspense right up to the last moment. IJ did put a lot effort in this well designed cache. At the end you will enjoy it when it is done. Good Luck. :)

The Hildebrand monument is not available but with some assumptions we found the actual waypoint of the cache. We are in the final phase of getting the last three caches. Our bookings are done and we are ready to rumble or to stumble. Time will tell. We are leaving on the 28 March and we will return on 10 April – a day before the final event.

My apologies to every one for my previous posting on this treat. I had a blank moment (it happens regularly lately).

The agreement is that the FTF prize is provided by Tusk 0’2 for the team that has personally collected all the clues in South Africa and solves the puzzle in time, and be the first to find the final cache. (The idée is that the team must earn the prize for his hard work).

Teams that have collaborated to collect the clues can still find the final Tontel after the FTF prize has been claimed.

:) Please accept my apologies. :)

Hey - I'm open to trading clues.

BUT!!!! I have a huge problem - I knew I would not be in the country - so I have forgotten all the clues I have found (apart from my own TD IV in Linden) - which I will not trade!

So no luck on that account!! Sorry

Thanks for the feedback, Gerhardoos - and for confirming it RedGlobe.

What you are saying is as I thought - so it was just to clear it up to cachers who may not know of the decision that was made.

:-) I will definately then not be in for the FTF race, but with half of the clues in hand by Easter, I should be able to trade a few.... ;-)

If team Ginger can climb that high in the Drakensberg with a smile on their faces then we can expect some real action. Maybe the penalty is too lenient.

I think it is going to be a nice event – you can buy cheese, you can buy peach brandy and real fresh food from the farm and you can meet the friendly people of Tonteldoos. During my recent visit I really enjoyed the cheese platter at the little restaurant. This is probably the biggest thing that happened to them since the Anglo Boer Wars. Can’t wait to do visit this little village again. Are they ready for us? Gerhard

We are definitely planning to put a lot of effort into obtaining all 18 clues and sign all 18 log sheets in the very limited time left before setting off for the final Tontoldoos cache / event. We agree that keeping to the spirit of geocaching and keeping an event enjoyable to everyone all teams will should have the opportunity to hunt for the final one. A penalty of 10min per clue required is a good idea, but it seems very short compared to the time effort and planning necessary to find say the “Hanover” cache. What about a minimum start delay of 60min and thereafter a time penalty on a sliding scale10 - 1 minute depending on the number of outstanding clues – still not eligible for a FTF?

One last thought. It would surely be the cherry on top if all the cachers who enthusiastically joined the whole Tonteldoos series by hiding caches, can put in some additional time and effort to attend the grand finale of this very exciting series.

Link to post

Yes, it would be nice if all the owners can attend but I think it is not something we can demand. Circumstances such as family, work, timing and money issues could limit the ability to attend. But I would love to see the owners at the event.

You are in a great position to find many caches on your way. You did find Hildebrand which is the furthest one away. Hanover is on the way, Groot Trek, Savannah and Guerrilla is also aligned. This will give you 14 clues. In one day you could find Young Paul, Paul Kruger and Boekenhoudt which will add to 17 clues.

Then only Krugerhof is left. Easy to do this one. You leave Pretoria on the day of the event at 02h00 and go for a quick visit to Krugerhof and then back to Tonteldoos.:rolleyes:

Well done.

Oops, I thought you were driving with a vehicle. At least you got to the furthest one. That was planned well. I still have to travel all the way down to Hildebrand. Maybe another cacher can join you and share the expense. I am sure that someone will be prepared to do this if you want to go this way.

It will be good to watch your progress. “Waar ‘n wil is sal daar ‘n weg wees”. It will be boring if only one or two people are available to find a FTF. It will also be interesting to see how many people are going to find the final one in the future. In the beginning I thought it was impossible to find all of them. But RedGlobe is the living proof that it can be done. Luckily not more similar caches were added to this series. I think this is the biggest series in South Africa.

Best of luck and I hope you find them.

Well, I do admit that it is a wow accomplishment to have all 18 clues in hand! Congratulations!

Ginger couldn't travel as far and wide, but gave it a good try.

Ginger, there is still hope left. It is not a fact cast in stone that a cacher with 18 clues will find the FTF for sure. The person with the 18 clues is under pressure and he is rushing and he could make serious errors. He does have a lot of other cachers breathing down his neck. Some people cave in under pressure for example me. The higher the pressure the more precise I want to go and that makes it messy and slow. If I read your team correctly then you and your mate will say with a smile “Give me much more pressure - please”. This is the part that worries me.:o:)

The cacher waiting for his turn patiently has time to relax and have an hour to think about the clues and how they all fit together. They could move in quickly and get the FTF. I would love to have the FTF but at the end it will be much more fun to see how this is going to turn out. It should be great fun no matter who gets the FTF and I am going to enjoy this one.

Hi, as a newby that I considder myself, as I only became active halfway through December, there is already quite a lot of barriers to this game. I would not dream of taking anything away from those that will manage to get all 18 clues. But this does preclude me from joining in. I will still have to log the caches when I get to them! I agree that those that do attend and do not have all the clues are penalised. I would rather see that all the clues are shared at the start, That will result in a race to the finish. The prize will still go to the FTF who has all the caches logged. Just an idea

One last thought. It would surely be the cherry on top if all the cachers who enthusiastically joined the whole Tonteldoos series by hiding caches, can put in some additional time and effort to attend the grand finale of this very exciting series.

I so wanted to be there, but we could not make it to PE in December, and the only time now which seems that we can go and visit in this coming Easter.

Gerhard you should create an Event since quite a few cachers will be there Call it something Like "Toteldoos XVI- Pot of Gold". This would be the cherry ontop for the people doing the final one.

We are a competitive team, Gerhard - it's my nature hehe, but I think Andre is much more relaxed. :-)

Caching for me, must always be fun, fun, fun!!

Ultimately, whoever finds the cache first, will deserve it - and I'm just enjoying working you guys up. hehehe

Yes, please! It's time for the event to be listed! :-)

The final hunt will take place on 11 April 2009 at the village called Tonteldoos. Further details will be made available soon.

Average difficulty for all caches combined is 2.08 and the average terrain is 1.69. Days left to qualify for the big and final tonteldoos = 24 days. 141 different cachers paid a visit. Little change in data since last run. Only 3 cachers have a chance to find the final one unless a serious attempt is done.

The following cachers have the following clues.

_________________________________________________________________

18 Clue (Through to final)

RedGlobe

He was the first to achieve 18 clues and is now relaxing with a book on Anglo Boer Wars and an ice cream while practising Yoga to relax his mind. Well done.

15 Clues (Every 8 days one tonteldoos must be found)

gerhardoosMPsa - Hanover, Hildebrand and Groot Trek

We are leaving on 25 or 26 March for the final ones.

12 Clues (Every 4 days one tonteldoos must be found)

DiePienaars, Fish Eagle, Glider Slider, Team Ginger, Wazat.

Team Ginger especially the smurfie is sharpening their claws in order to get to some more tonteldoos hunts on their list. They plan to finish the series with a hunt for the final one. They already have plans in place.

Team Glider Slider is also sliding his way up for more tonteldose.

5 clues (Every 1.8 days one tonteldoos must be found)

Antron, Danie Viljoen, iPajero, KeithWood , Strider_SA, Tricky Vicky & Mickey.

The Tonteldoos Event has been published. Needless to say the event, that will start at 14:00 on Saturday 11 April 2009, is open for all and not just for the cachers who are planning to hunt for the final cache in the series.

So, if you are planning to hunt for the final cache or just want to relax and have a braai you can join us at the published coordinates.

Just to whet the appetites of those who will be "Going for Gold" at the Tonteldoos Event. All the final arrangements have been made and the necessary documentation [clue sheets, etc] have been done and are ready for the big day. The cache will only be published after the Event so only those who have all 18 clues will be able to "Go for Gold" on the day. The rating will be 5* difficulty and 3.5* terrain for those who are interested.

I am really sorry that I won't be there to see the finalists racing for the gold, but I am sure that there will be plenty of pictures added to the Event site after the weekend.

Good luck to all the finalists and I must say that I enjoyed doing this final for the Series.

Congrats to Redglobe for the FTF ! !

Also congratulations to the teams of gerhardoosMP and Urban Hunters. Either team would have deserve the FTF.

To all the cachers that made the Tonteldoos series possible, a big thank you. TuskO'2 & Cincol special thanks for all your contributions to this series.

Knowledge and experiences were gained by cachers and non cachers about Geocaching and the subject of the Anglo Boer War. All cache owners did more research and work on these caches than any of their regular caches, and cache finders also reported in their logs about learning about the ABW and the effort that was put into creating these caches.

Great series.

TFTCaches.
