+The White Family
The best part of geocacheuk, in our view, is the cache rating system. We've used it to identify caches for many of our milestones and as we're now approaching our 3000th we're missing geocacheuk. So we're hoping to receive some suggestions on here for a cache that would make a great 3000th. Of course, everyone's idea of a great cache is different so you need to know what our requirements are. Firstly, it needs to be within a reasonable distance of home (Bracknell, Berkshire). We don't mind staying overnight, but further north than Brimingham or further west than Bristol are probably a bit too far. The cache type is unlikely to be a Trad. Probably a Multi, and possibly a Mystery but not one which has complex puzzles before you can get started. Puzzles on site are OK so long as they can be easily solved on site or with a quick Google. Difficulty and terrain are likely to be 4*/3.5* or greater. Obviously we can easily filter on these but D/T isn't the whole story. The cache must stand alone. That is, finding it mustn't depend on previously having found other caches or TBs (unless we've already found them, or they can quickly found on the same day/weekend). Special equipment requirements are fine, so long as it's evident from the cache page that special equipment is required (and we've got it). To give you an idea of the sort of caches we've found to be great, go here and look at the 1000th, 1500th, 2000th and 2500th. All suggestions gratefully received. Quote Link to comment
+Bill D (wwh)
I don't know whether you've done it or not, as you've got rather a lot of finds to wade through to check, lol...! But if you haven't, then Wildcat is just within your distance limit, it's a 5/5 which definitely does require specialist equipment but which can be hired on the spot, and should be achievable over a weekend if not in one day. I've started it, but not completed it because I ran out of time, but from the logs it's quite definitely a rather special one! Quote Link to comment

markandlynn
Not sure if this helps you Alan but we have a few bookmark lists based on the GUK ratings. Of course as you can only see page 3 you may have to use the odd pq hopefully in preview mode though ! All are visible on our bookmark tab on our profile page. http://www.geocaching.com/profile/Default.aspx?id=122022 The bad news is i only did top rated for staffordshire and shropshire. I also have a spreadsheet with the UK's top rated in sat in a file on my computer (excel format) drop me a PM if you want this emailing across. Hope that helps. You could just ignore those and choose one of ours as i know you have not visited them yet..... some are even above average Quote Link to comment
+kewfriend
GO ABROAD How about a day trip to Nice in the south of France. There are several good caches within 60 mins drive. OR Do the one that I failed to do near Annecy - (day trip to Geneva - 60 min drive again). Its a serious cache - the puzzle bit is not that difficult but I climbed (in the snow!) to the top to find it and failed.(GCYXXJ). The coords are allegedly nearly spot on but oh so many nooks and crannies! So there's an idea for the 3000th! Quote Link to comment
+Von-Horst
How about 'Flotsam & Jetsam EXTREME'? http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...e3-e194a4562465 Special equipment is required (and provided) and it certainly seems to deserve its 5/5 rating unlike some... Quote Link to comment
+skimstone
These are our defining caches (won't forget and caused much heartache until finding) but they are probably all a little too far west for you: Runique Unique Will require finding of (great) additional caches but not necessarily logging prior to the big one. Not a surefire hit though as the constituent caches aren't easy. Plenty of petrol & carbon offsetting required. Real difficulty is knowing where to start. Hold Your Nerve Only possible with an overnight stay but a real thrill to complete. Best done when BST is not active. What's that coming over the hill Creative hides in a lovely area. +The White Family
Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. And thanks again to Teasel for getting GeocacheUK up in time for us to review the ratings. We chose Pitcher Amphora. This is in the top 20 in the UK and is also quite close to us. We started the Pitch series 18 months ago but after an abysmal performance on Pitch 2 we put the rest of the series on hold until we - and Brambler - had recovered. Suitably refreshed we visited Pitch 3 (itself in the top 30) a couple of weeks ago and last Friday we did Pitcher Amphora. On a surprisingly pleasant December day we had a lovely walk and we can say that Pitcher Amphora is certainly a great cache, well worthy of a milestone. Thanks to Brambler for the challenging series. +maxkim
If you fancy something up North you can try Burke and Hare or The Helsby 5K Challenge both well worth the chase. Don't look down in the Peak District was also good, but you need climbing tackle for it. Cheers MaxKim Quote Link to comment
