I was wondering if it was possible for someone who isn't into the sport, and so would be reluctant to register, to post to the owner that a cache was found lying about. Or in my case, maybe found floating down the Chicago River.

Oh, lying about, not being lied about...

Yeah, looks as though if I want to be notified by a friendly muggle, I'll have to include an email address. Can't find a work-around on the GC site. Oh well.

I assume that you mean, if a muggle found your cache and it was damaged.... they could contact you.

Ok, if this was the case, you would really need to include your details within your cache. We have started putting our yahoo email address in our cache containers for exactly this reason.

We found that writing them in either a paint pen or waterproof texta was best.

hope this helps.

There isn't.

For someone to send you an email threw the gc.com site they still need an account, and to know what you user name is.

For someone to post to the cache they page they need an account, which they had to sign up for.

(and would also have to figure out which cache they found and locate the page for... if the name of the cache or cache ID number is on the container or logbook ok, otherwise any random muggle may not have a clue how to figure out which cache it was)

Okay, we can end the discussion here, unless someone who works for Groundspeak can suggest a method to work around the registration problem. Maybe you should consider a Guest Use arrangement of some sort.

Anyway, a brief history: Twice now I've had my cache disappear. It could have been muggled, but it was pretty well hidden, not easy to see at all. But we've also had some pretty fierce storms this summer, and I suppose it could have been blown out of its hidey hole and into the river, which is just a few feet away. I wanted to include the cache name and number on the geo info sheet with instructions on how to navigate the site if some good natured soul found it and was willing to report where it was found, but discovered you can't do that without registering. Probably not something a non-cacher would do, no matter how good intentioned they were. Maybe, if it struck their curiosity, but I wouldn't count on it.

So I guess it's a yahoo.com email I'll have to use for this purpose, which bums me out cause I think it is less enticing than a website, plus I never check the sucker. I think I created one about 8 months ago, and just went there today to see if it still existed. The good news: still there. The best news: No Spam. Couldn't believe it.

So that's my story, and I'm sticking with it, as my old neighbor from down the street would say.

The downside to allowing someone to log/post/email without an account (that has to be verified with a real email address), is that it would turn the site into spam-bait. Do you really want your caches to to get filled up with logs pushing fake Viagra, pump-n-dump stock tips, and sexy teens posing just for you! Okay, don't answer that last one. I know this crowd.

To sum up - No thanks. It works just fine as it is.

I'm not sure about yahoo mail, but with other free emails accounts (like gmail) you can set it up to auto-forward to an email account you DO check.

And welcome from another Chicago-area cacher B)

Looks as though I'll have to check out gmail, as yahoo will only forward a "premium" account, premium meaning money is involved. And thanks for the website--I'll check it out.

It doesn't have to be gc.com.

Find a site that allows guest access or another popular site that they are likely to have an account. Use a my faces or spaces or whatever those places are called.

No, thanks. Last thing I need is some county copper dropping in on my homepage saying he/she found or wants to find my "cache." (Hey there Big Boy. I'm only 15 and guess what I found!)

Har-Har. Forgetaboutit. Oops, the last three letters spell tit. Hope that doesn't get me into trouble.
