+simpjkee
Is there a difference between a GPS and a GPSr or are they interchangable acronyms? Quote Link to comment
+Knight2000
Is there a difference between a GPS and a GPSr or are they interchangable acronyms? Technically they are different. Although everyone means GPSr when they say GPS. At least here. Quote Link to comment
+simpjkee
I'm guessing it's Global Positioning System vs. Global Positioning System reciever and geocachers use recievers? Quote Link to comment
+Miragee
GPS stands for Global Positioning System GPSr stands for Global Positioning System Receiver. Edit for correction/clarification Edited July 29, 2007 by Miragee Quote Link to comment
+the hermit crabs
But don't feel like you have to say that you have a "GPSr" -- any more than you would say that you're listening to your "radio receiver" rather than just your "radio". (to me, "GPSr" sounds silly and a bit pretentious.) Quote Link to comment
BRTango
I grew up calling them Pluggers... still do except here in the forums. PLGR: AN/PSN-11 Precision Lightweight GPS Receiver (PLGR) Quote Link to comment
+wesleykey
In the forums we understand " Magellan GPS" to mean a receiver made by Magellan. Technically, GPS is the satellite ststem and GPSr is your personal receiver. Quote Link to comment
+StarBrand
GPS is the multi-billion dollar satellite and ground tracking system operated by the United States. GPSr is the small device you carry around that receives signals from the above and calculates your position. In general useage and for all practical purposes - they are interchangeable. I tend to use the "r" version when writing and the other for speaking. Quote Link to comment
