Technically they are different.

 

Although everyone means GPSr when they say GPS. At least here.

vs.

 

Global Positioning System reciever

 

and geocachers use recievers?

GPS stands for Global Positioning System

 

GPSr stands for Global Positioning System Receiver.

But don't feel like you have to say that you have a "GPSr" -- any more than you would say that you're listening to your "radio receiver" rather than just your "radio".

 

(to me, "GPSr" sounds silly and a bit pretentious.)

I grew up calling them Pluggers... still do except here in the forums.

In the forums we understand " Magellan GPS" to mean a receiver made by Magellan.

 

Technically, GPS is the satellite ststem and GPSr is your personal receiver.

GPSr is the small device you carry around that receives signals from the above and calculates your position.

 

In general useage and for all practical purposes - they are interchangeable. I tend to use the "r" version when writing and the other for speaking.
