Manncubs

Recommended Posts

The Manncubs are off to the Channel Isles in a week or two.

Pleased to see theres some caches for us to do while we're there.

Strangely, there doesnt seem to any OS maps of the islands to import into Memory Map. :-(

Anyone know of any other maps of the islands that will work with MM?

Also any recommendations of pubs that we could pay a visit to while bagging any particular caches ?

Thanks in advance.

You'll be lucky! I think it falls outside of the OS remit and 'someone' who owns the digital mapping rights ain't selling 'em. When I went to Guernsey last year imagine my confusion when driving off the ferry and expecting TT to take me to the hotel - not a single road listed!

FWIW There are lots of paper (!) maps available in car hire places and hotels etc. and I found on both islands this was enough to get around and to the parking areas for all the caches I tried.

Good luck

These islands aren't so big that you'd get lost all that easily - a paper map should do. All Jersey roads are name-signed, although Guernsey has yet to follow suit. It's almost as if they WANT people to get lost!

As for pubs, they're all good, try them all! *hic*

If there's anywhere in particular you'd like a waypoint for, let me know and I'll take a reading for you. Enjoy your trip!

I have an Ordnance Survey paper map of Jersey, but I have no idea whether this is available for memory map. It appears to use something called "UTM grid" as well as Lat/Long references. I've just looked at the Jersey caches and see that locations are given in UTM grid as well as Lat/long - if you can obtain a copy of this map I'm sure it will be more than sufficient for your needs.

That maps not to bad but it doesnt show all the roads you'll need ;) .You'll be able to pick up a better one as soon as you enter the island (harbour/airport/hotel/guesthouse) but you'd be better to get a Perrys Guide as thats the best road map of the island. Most news agents sell them for a few quid.

As for pubs we have over 160 here so no cache is too far away :) If you still want a few good pubs close to some caches let us know and well cobble a list together. All are generally family friendly and serve good food too. B)

That PDF map is quite good, it shows all roads and whether they're major routes or narrow lanes, but doesn't name them. The newsagents over here all sell a more detailed map, but if you are as cheap as I am (!) you could walk into Jersey Telecom's shop in the high street and take a free phone book from a pile by the door.. the map is in there. I've actually ripped out the map pages from a spare phone book at work, and stapled them neatly into a handy reference that now lives in my car.

Try the Portelet Inn after the "Noirmont" cache, the Pembroke after "Hole in One" at Grouville Common, the Seymour after "L'Avarizon", Corbiere Phare after "Five Mile Beach", the Devil's Hole pub after "Shooting the Devil", and the Smugglers Inn at Ouaisne ("way-nay") after "La Cotte" :o

Top Banana :o

Thats just the sort of info I need.

Cheers!

Must remember to put the wife down as additional driver on the car hire .. :o

Just to revive this thread a bit...

I see there are now 51 caches in Jersey, but only 7 in Guernsey. I wonder why it hasn't caught on over there?

Jersey http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?country_id=102

Guernsey http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?country_id=86

Anyhow, with 51 here it seems Jersey could promote itself as a Caching Holiday destination! Come over for a weekend break and see how many you can get

Finally, do any of the other locals use these forums, I wonder.. please say hi.. perhaps we could use the forum to discuss things more?

We'll be on Jersey on the 17th April to the 21st and then over to Guernsey till the 27th, hope to see a few cachers while we are over........and of course visit one or two caches.

One question is there any real ale or cider on the Islands?

Hiya Jersey Royals, hi L8HNB - hope you have a good time over here. There are 2 new caches for you this week too :D

At Le Catel de Lecq I had been thinking of placing one somewhere on the mound itself, because it can be quite tricky to get up there, but that would have been a bit evil, LOL. Once again you beat me to it, and the surrounding 500ft are all yours :D

Thanks for adding another to my todo list, I'm only 4 away from the full (local) set!

And two of the Guernsey caches are actually on Sark and of the 7 2 are unavailable including one of the sark ones :D

Anyway had a nice weekend there just before easter and bagged the caches that weren't there last time and left some coins and a TB there to start travelling.

On the GPS mapping subject, tom tom is still useless, so at times my 60 csx became lap nav! And to top it off, the day after getting back I took delivery of my new car whose built in sat nav has full maps for the island too (uselss for caching though because it won't do poi's).

Even if the caches are a bit thin on the ground I can't recommend a trip to Guernsey (or Jersey) enough, we had a great weekend.

After a great day off, I'm now just 2 away from the full set, and the one with the longest walk (on very low tides) has been ticked off at last.

And I've re-enabled my Pondlife cache now, with a new final location... who's going to be first to find at the new spot? :)

Gotta keep this thread up to date - I found out today that I have to go to Jersey next week for a business trip  I've convinced my boss that even though it's a bit more expensive than flying, taking the car is the best bet which means I'll have a chance to crack some of the many new caches in Jersey since my last visit - and I get to see how the new in car nav system performs

Been back almost a week now, and nearly up to date with the paperwork and housework etc.

Firstly, a big thank-you to the Jersey Royals who made our visit such a great pleasure, also to all the owners of the caches we did this time.

We did 39 caches in the 10 days we were on Jersey (34), Guernsey (4) and Sark (1) with relative ease as the Islands are very compact. Jersey has the most caches by far, and they seem to be ever increasing due to a very active and imaginative bunch over there.

While we enjoyed all the caches, Jersey is the place to go. Without exception all caches are of a high standard, our favourites in no particular order were L'Avarizon, Jersey No1, Le Crapaud and The Haunted Woods and are all must do's if visiting the Island. Lots of the caches give stunning views of the Island but beware of the steps, there seemed to be literally hundreds!

On the cache location front we had the Perrys guides, useful for the final location, but made good use of the freebie maps for general guidance to a particular spot.

We would definately recommend a visit, and would be pleased to advise anyone thinking of going over, you could also contact one of the "locals" for even more in-depth assistance.

We will be back.........

Thanks for that, glad to see you had a good time over here - I enjoy following visitors logs day by day, to see where they've been and how they got on.

Maybe we'll have a few more for you to do by the time you come back.. although there's a limit to how many you could do in one trip, and I wonder if it would be off-putting if there were hundreds!

Off putting, no not for us, mind boggling - perhaps.........

When we first thought of coming over, just after Xmas, there were about 30 caches, doddle we thought. Did all the booking up, travel etc and sort of forgot all about it until a couple of weeks before leaving.

Thought we'ed just check for any temp archives and new ones and WOW suddenly there were 50+! Excellent. Thinking back, I think your Ieaux Dude came up after us leaving home!

As for following our progress it started off in a planned manner and then degenerated into chaos, Obviously L'Avarizon had to be planned, but with the Islands being so easily accessable we tended to be a bit random towards the end.

An update on Guernsey mapping for you - the last OS map was done in 1983 and is out of print. Specialist map shops may have a copy. It's set on UTM zone 30 datum, and I have successfully set my Vista HCX to use that datum. There have been many new housing estates built since the map was produced, but all the caches are in areas where there has been little or no development, so you'll be fine.

In more recent years the Government (States of Guernsey) have created a 100% GPS-created map of the island - see www.digimap.gg for more details. This is available as an OS-style 1:25k paper map from them by mail order, or in local shops. The problem with it is that it's marked with grid squares for the 'new Guernsey grid' which GPS devices can't handle due to the origin not being on the equator. It does have the UTM grid marked on the edges, so with a pencil & ruler you can plot your cache locations with enough accuracy to get to the nearest carpark. It is being re-released later this year, possibly at 1:15k scale.

With regard to the important question of real ale & cider  The best pub for that is 'The Cock & Bull' at the top of Cornet street - lots of CAMRA awards. Other good pubs are in the CAMRA good beer guide. There is an award-winning local brewery, the Guernsey Brewery.

Although I'm new to caching I have a very good knowledge of the island and am looking forward to placing a good few caches of my own in time for tourist season - if any visitors want to place caches then I may well be up for doing maintainer duties.

Jersey; the most southerly point in Britain.

You'd best check what the most southerly point is defined as - it may be a rock at the southern end of Les Minquiers reefs south of Jersey which will definitely make the event extreme - for a start you'll probably need an equinoctal low spring tide, and an experienced boatman!

Back to the Guernsey thing - I am also able to check ownership information for anywhere in the island from the comfort of my desk if anyone wants to know something :-)

Serious bump on this one! Good info ZweiOrmers. While I'm passing, I'll give a very advanced heads-up. My fourth Extreme Geocache Event will be June 2010 on Jersey; the most southerly point in Britain.

I just got back from a weekend in Jersey.. Some great caching to be had, some of which is quite scary, just wish I had more time to do more.. Oh well, looks like I'll have to arrange another trip..

There's great coastal caches around Jersey.

There's a wonderful Earth cache too that'll give you a good workout when you walk back up from it.

And a wondeful beach hut just outside St Heliers that serves top Thai grub.

And good Portuguese food too around town.

and......

I looked into this last year before deciding on Shetland for this year's trip. "The Minkies" couldn't permanently support a person; which puts them beyond my definition of Britain- They're just fancy rocks. However, they do have buildings on them... The Écréhous would also be great to visit, but aren't as far south as L'Avarizon by Jersey Royals, which is on a tidal island off the south coast of Jersey. Perhaps if I can find suitable transport out to The Minquiers in 2010, they will get a visit and, who knows, a cache/event? Edited by Simply Paul
