Found A Cache That Doesn't Seem To Exist!

Amy and I were out on our bikes and came to a small historical house. We went in and I took the GPS with us (we were using it to find our route). The ranger saw the GPS and said that people use to go there several years ago and showed us a box marked WWW.Geocaching.Com. All that was in it was a CITO button from 2003. She said no one had been to find it for a couple of years. I wrote down the coord. and looked them up on Geocaching.com and the Waymarking website but it isn't listed. Is it possible that it was forgotten by it's owners and is it possible to adopt a cache in this situation? I have no idea who to notify or ask about this--any suggestions?

It's possible the cache was archived ... if you can post the coordinates, perhaps someone from the area may recall (or have logged) it.

For that matter, did the cache have a "log book" or an identifying sticker on it? If so, that should have the GC number (or cache title) on it which you can then look up online. If there's no number, if there's a log book, you can possibly chase it down through a cacher's profile by noting the date a particular cacher found it and then checking what caches that person found on that date in their profile.

Hi Lasagna,

There was only a CITO button from 2003. I left a small log book with the hope that some one would see the note I left and get back to me. How do I look up archived caches. I had thought of that but don't know how to access them.

You find a nearby active cache and then click on the map near the top the description. It'll bring up another map where you can select to include "archived" caches in the view. This might however be a "members" only feature ... thus the request for the coords.

So this box was IN the house?? (the ranger didn't find it somewhere and move it?)

If you know the location it was, you could use the gc.com maps to look for archived caches. Zoom and pan till you get to the coorect arrow, then check identy and 'list archived' and click the map. The problem is to zoom etc I think you need to be premium members.

Otherwise you need a gc ID number, or who found it hide it and so can follow the links back to a page. (if there was one)

I'll try the map thing. I don't have the coord. here at work with me. The closest was Troll 6 The Dinning Room N 46 56.149 W 71 25.995 Which I went back and found the next day

Just a thought. Keep in mind while you're searching for this "unknown" cache that there are multi's and puzzle caches that do not give you coords for the final cache. Posted coords on cache pages can be miles away. Just don't limit yourself to the close surrounding area.

The box was in the historical house. The ranger said people use to come in looking for it with GPS's. She saw my GPS and thaught I was looking for it. I just paid to be a premium Mbr today--I don't think it's active yet but I can get the coord for who ever can help.

Was this cache in Providence?

Where was the house? If you have an address or general area, or know of another cache nearby, its possible that we can find the listing.

The cache box was in the Captain Kelly House on the Lincoln bike trail under the route 116 bridge. There is Troll 6 The dinning room near by in one direction and Troll 3 The Shower in the other direction.

The Cache was in Lincoln at the Captain Kelly House on the Lincoln bike path under the 116 overpass.

It's possible that it wasn't registered on GC.com, but on Navacache instead. Oh, wait, that couldn't be it. The ranger said that people actually came looking for it. Never mind.

The cache box has WWW.Geocache.Com written on it in big blak letters, but no notices or papers inside explaining geocaching like I have seen at other traditional caches.

I found the coords at lunch time (work always gets in the way of having fun!)

I don't see a thing in the area. None of the nearby archived caches seem to fit. There is also no listing on Navicache that is within 30 miles of Lincoln, RI.

I took a look at terraching the nearest is an old event message from last fall 15miles away, and then some regular caches 40+...

I would think maybe this cache never got submitted except the ranger said people visited. So where were they getting the coords??

I'm thinking it might have been the event cache associated with this CITO?

Quote from the event page:

The afternoon gathering will take place on the grounds around the Kelly House, additional parking available at (41 56.300N, 71 25.930W). Inside the museum, there are four rooms which have some wonderful exhibits on the history of the Blackstone. Please sign their visitor register making mention of GC. There will be an event cache nearby, where you may pick up a special pin and leave an item for a future traditional cache.

hmm... good find Carleen.

did you look at the hint?

[41 56.238 N, 71 26.028 W] In Gallery three, about one meter less in elevation than the visitor register of the Kelly House.

Maybe they're describing the location of the cache??

Seems likely.

That sounds very likely. The cache box only had a CITO pin in it and it was directly beneath the visitor log in the kelly house, in gallery 3 about 3 feet below the visitor log!

Wow, you found one that wasn't even listed anymore, have some smilies!  ;):D

On the serious side it sounds like the Rangers kind of enjoyed having a cache there, perhaps you could revive it and relist it as a new Traditional cache.

The Kelly House container is one of mine from a former CITO event along the Blackstone River as stated. I do have permission to make a permanent cache at this location but it would be seasonal. There is now a micro close by, which I think is just over 1/10 away. Hard to believe that many years has gone by. I check on it each time I visit and knew there were a few buttons still in there as of two weeks ago. Give me another week or two and we will have the Captain Wilbur Kelly cache up and running.

At the time we found it we didn't know it wasn't currently listed. I put a log book in it and a RI gecoin (Ithink the kids added some stuff as well).. The ranger was excited about having the cache there. Once you have it active I can log it in the geocoin log.
