  1. I am of the belief that coordinates will come into play along the way to determining final location of hidden treasure. According to the website mentioned above and the associated PR, the challenge will take place over the next 8 weeks with one of eight videos being released each week beginning this last Sunday 8/1/10 through 9/19. Within are clues and riddles to be deciphered to determine the route that a crew of pirates (they are puppets) had taken when they hid their gold somewhere within the 5 boroughs on NYC. The story line has them retracing their steps to the lost treasure, but the first to find the 'buried' chest keeps the cache of 10,000 'golden' $1 coins. This reminds me a little of the DARPA challenge last year and how Groundspeak with some dedicated lackeys formed a team from among the geocaching community to work through the red herrings in search of weather balloons across the country in hopes of a mega prize. Although the prize monies are not as high for this challenge, the approach could work similarly. I just as soon work through the codes at my own pace and when solved, take a ride to the big Apple and dig up my winnings or partner with some city local, but I can see from the first video this will require cooperative effort to resolve every piece of information presented in a timely manner while tracking a virtual trail beginning in Central Park until that last bit of information reveals the necessary steps to be applied to the end game in the field. Have the PTB been looking at this challenge? I doubt that many individuals could beat the machine and universal mind of geocachers, however, processing the vast amount of shared information and opinions will get more difficult in a forum approach as time gets closer to the end. Could be overwhelming. If Jeremy decides to give this a try, I will likely join in to help, but if not, I am setting my schedule for a trip to NYC in Sept. Happy hunting
  2. I will help in any way possible; not that I am the fastest at maintenance. I have enjoyed each and everyone one of your puzzles plus hides. Many of these caches are the closest to my home GZ. Maybe FTF should be my qualifier. After you hold back a few and others offer to help with a some, we could probably take care of the rest. Will send you a note. V
  3. The "Page Not Found" links in the Geocaching Groups by Region/State are of the form http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest_cache.asp?state_id=60 where as the drop down on the Hide and Seek a cache page is of the the form http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?state_id=60 (ps Never noticed that Alabama is State 60 and state_id=1 seems to be all of Europe)
  4. As of Oct 12th,2007 6:30am EDT this LAST FOUND date problem still exists with the various seek nearest listings. TODAY appears for caches with found date of October 11, YESTERDAY for October 10, but with OCTOBER 9 finds, some read 2 DAYS and others read 3 DAYS. 4, 5, 6 DAYS appear correct for 10/8, 10/7, 10/6 logs that I sampled, however for 7 DAYS I saw 10/5 and some 10/4 but not all of them as most listed as last found '04 Oct 07' With new version of software, is this Last Found date being displayed with some type of Date Posted time stamp field other than the log date?
  5. Strikethrough IMO Listed Waymarks should be available to search for and located. There is the ability to delete or archive a waymark, there currently is the ability to not appear on listings, however, the functionality for noting temporarily not available (or on the otherhand, only temporarily available) does not exist but still list. May be it will be available in future update with the listing appearing with a strikethrough, so I know to ignor or read the latest notes. For instance. I have a WM in Art*o*mats category whose store closed and object removed. Will it be archived or temporarily disabled? I have yet to determine. http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/details...1e-4d2df2e0048b I also have a Corn Maze WM which is only seasonally available to visit.
  6. The Kelly House container is one of mine from a former CITO event along the Blackstone River as stated. I do have permission to make a permanent cache at this location but it would be seasonal. There is now a micro close by, which I think is just over 1/10 away. Hard to believe that many years has gone by. I check on it each time I visit and knew there were a few buttons still in there as of two weeks ago. Give me another week or two and we will have the Captain Wilbur Kelly cache up and running. Val
  7. Visited the Atlanta Art-o-Mat yesterday and shall post log when I get home tomorrow or next day. About 1/4 of the artist's works are sold out, so the machine seems to get business. That is 1 WM and 2 Visits.
  8. Interesting offer, although I might prefer the token to drop into one of those five nearby machines. I have got one in Providence RI already listed, however, the two previously listed in Newport RI have returned home. Eventually I or someone will get to the only one in MA and since the one in ME is listed, that will cover New England. There are not many neighborhoods or even states with 5 machines. My bet is someone from Winston-Salem will be the first to take your challenge.
  9. Wegkapelle googled images. Wayside Chapel hits more images than waychapel
  10. Yes vote. The lime quarrying around northen Rhode Island is the longest continuous running industry; over 325 years and in addition to active mining there are a number of kiln ruins, some of which are on National Registry of Historic Places.
  11. There are a number of 18th century stone mileposts throughout New England which I enjoy finding. Then there are also some early 19th century ones from the turnpike and canal era as well as from mid to late 19thC along most of the railroad lines.
  12. There was a time when Bre, my daughter, and I would find a different playground each time we went out. She would remember them by some special feature, such as the one with the horse swings. Today, I do not frequent them as often unless someone hides a geocache 50 feet into the woods.
  13. Yes to the annual (agricultural) fairs, whose grounds are used primarily for that purpose. No to the travelling carnivals that set up at Mall or church parking lots. Last week I went to the Big E, the Eastern States Exposition, New England's largest fair which runs for 17 days from the middle of September.
  14. Cool, at the moment there is one in Massachusetts and two in Rhode Island; the one in Newport is a travelling, roving or nomadic Art o Mat sponsored by Project One. This from their website: An Art*o*Mat is a vintage cigarette machine which has been reconditioned to vend art. 400 artists from 10 countries make the art vended by these machines. The machines are produced by an artist in North Carolina named Clark Whittington. Clark has made about 63 of these machines, each one unique, and installed them in museums, galleries and arts-friendly businesses and institutions across America. Project One commissioned this machine in the summer of 2003, through the assistance of a grant from the Rhode Island Foundation and a sponsorship arrangement with Newport This Week. It was the first one in RI. The Project One Art*o*Mat moves to a new area business every few weeks, making it the only nomadic Art*o*mat in the world! Current mileage is…. 860 miles.
  15. Yes to Covered Bridges subcategory. I would drive many miles to cross a CB and have visited many worldwide over the years of touring. As a lifetime member of the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges, Waymarking would be a good way of promoting their protection. If the current locationaless owner is not interested and the OP does not want to moderate this category, I would certainly offer to do so. Suggestion would be to have a few sub-subcategories for the authentic wooden truss bridges which have a number in the World Guide to CBs, so as to distinguish access: Covered Bridge active roadway Covered Bridge active railway Covered Bridge pedestrian Additionally subcategories for Wooden Bridge Romantic Shelters (these include all the look alike bridges in parks, golf courses etc which are not authentic wooden truss bridges) Wooden Pony Truss (maybe covered but not roofed) Covered Bridges Gone but not forgotten (locations of previous CB) Each year a few more wooden bridges are lost to flooding, arson or demolition. I would allow previous bridge sites since they sometimes have historic markers. If the bridge is lost, an existing waymark could be moved to gone category. If a bridge is relocated to another location such as a park, a new waymark could be added. Occasionally a new covered bridges is built, but they are usually not authenic with the wooden truss holding the weight of the entire bridge, but rather a steel with concrete span covered with walls and roof. These are still interesting to list among Romantic Shelters but I would not mix them with historic bridges unless they are truly built in the traditional way. Might also support a Covered Bridge oddities subcategory for annual festivals, special events or that building that looks like a CB. May your bridges be covered and your ways be marked.
  16. A single waypoint for a National Park may have varying meaning such as Visitor Center, Trail Head, Camping, Scenic spots, Interpretive signage, passport cancellation station, but I doubt that any one set of coordinates would define an entire NP. May work for some of the other units, such as National Historic Monuments. In the USA, there is an expanding amount but countable number of NPS units and affliate area. I think each official one could be an individual subcategory under National Park Category (with distinct categories for other nations, such as Parks Canada) with its own listing moderator. Then each could have many individual waypoints of interest. Just a thought.
  17. Yes and as someone said there are often old State Houses sometimes located in different cities. Should they be separate waypoints within the same catergory of Capitol Buildings? Or another Category on same level (Current and Former) or a Subcategory one level down, so we see list of Capitols by name and a folder or link for Former Capitol Buildings? What about County Seats, including parishes etc?
  18. Awesome, Just what I needed this week for a refreshing diversion. Ended up doing more bushwhacking than necessary but found the old fireplace ruins. Had signal problems in the trees but grabbed a cookie from the jar. Decided to follow the river towards the final. Swapped some travel bugs, took a cookie and left an America Flag pin. Thanks, V
  19. Luvs5rugrats, Before you put the GPSr away, some receivers allow multiple formats for coordinates. When you find the MENU screen for what is usually called SETUP, you may be allowed to change what is sometimes called UNITS. You may be defaulting to (DD MM.MM) degree minutes with 2 decimal places, but there may be an option for (DD MM.MMM) 3 decimal places. If it allows you to switch to UTM, as some have suggested, that should be a bit more precise than even the 3 decimal minute format.
  20. JC, We have missed your company along the trails figuring you were busy with school and work. I remember our first encounter in West Warwick then on a few milestone jaunts plus a geomeet and/or CITO events. We will always remember your Trash cache, then Rhode Island first bug hotel, plus a few Providence Plantation micros, and super Christmas presents in Arcadia. Here is the list of caches by the Man in Black. I would have taken Prospect Terrace and Valley Falls, if they were not already archived. The Wood River Travel Bug Inn should be adopted for sure, because among other reasons, if an out of stater is looking for one along I-95, this is the one they go for. Maybe some team would grab your three in Arcadia - Santa's Toy Box, Camp Blood and Mount Tom. Unless someone comes through for Under the Stars, I had offered to helpout with those two already. Hope to see you before you leave; maybe you can make the Geomeet this Sunday 7/17 afternoon in Uxbridge; wear a sign "Adopt my caches".
  21. I experienced the missing Earthcaches on maps as well. In May, I made a trip to Detroit area and stayed in Dearborn. The nearest cache to the Inn I was staying at is now an Earthcache. It deals with salt mining and apparently got appproved on the day I arrived, so I did not have any info on it in advance. During the week, I made use of the Map features several times to detail my short trips as time was available and not once did the Earthcache show up. I drove by the site at least a half dozen times and it also caught my curiosity, so was I surprised when I got home and logged my activity. Cleared a radius of 7 to 10 miles with an unfound Earthcache smack in the middle. Did not understand how I missed it and I could have been FTF. Glad to hear that it has been brought to the attention as a problem with the maps excluding some cache types.
