+Night Stalker
Not for geocaching, though sometimes I think a divining rod would help. Quote Link to comment
+InHope
Do i need a metal detector? You know it's funny you ask because my wife was thinking the same thing. I think that it'd be neat to have because, heck, if something as novel as a cache is out there and you've never known about it before, perhaps you could find something cool buried in the ground. I do second the divining rod. Quote Link to comment
nobby.nobbs
it's a gadget, so surely that's good enough? not for caching but i'm sure you can find a use for it. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
I guess one can be helpful for looking for ammo boxes under the snow, but in general, no you do not need a metal detector. Geocaches are not buried. Quote Link to comment
bogleman
I used one to help track down some benchmarks, but walking 5 miles with it was not very fun. Quote Link to comment
+wesleykey
Caches are not all metal. Some are tupperware, etc. Metal detectors will likely not assist you in geocaching. Quote Link to comment
+Team Cotati
If you are looking for random unknown metal objects, yes. Otherwise, no. Quote Link to comment
+Tsmola
Found with a detector in an area loaded with caches, which area? I'm not saying, there's still stuff to be found there Quote Link to comment
+BlueDeuce
Do i need a metal detector? No. But if you want to talk about getting one for metal detecting lemme know. Quote Link to comment

True, but I bet MOST caches bigger than a micro have SOMETHING metal in them. A lot of the caches I find have loose change/sprial bound notebooks/travel bug tags/something metal in them. And yeah, I've been thinking about one for "ammo cans in the snow" caching. Quote Link to comment
+Segerguy
Do i need a metal detector? I was looking for a micro 35mm cache one day recently in a city park. The cache was somewhere inside of or around a huge tree. I was just about to give up looking when a man with a metal detector walked over to me and asked me very politely if I was looking for something. We had a nice little chat and I told him all about GeoCaching. The conversation turned to his metal detector and what it could do. He took me over to another tree area and turned it on...he told me it would tell him exactly what the metal was it was detecting , coin...even what amount penny, nickle, dime, etc. ring, watch, beer tap, etc. In a moment he told me it just hit on a quarter 1" down and sure enough there it was! He said it would even detect plastic, but he never really tried it. So I suggested to him that we try for the little 35mm container around that tree I couldn't fine. He turned it one, ran it all around and got a beep beep inside a hole/knot about 3 feet off the ground. I put my gloves on and reached inside the hole and there it was the PLASTIC container. It was great, and I got a Find! Edited May 25, 2006 by Segerguy Quote Link to comment
+Team JSAM
Do i need a metal detector? No Would it help? Yes, only if the cache is metal but I would not use one as it would take most of the fun out of it.... for me anyway. Quote Link to comment
