Not So Lost Puppies
How many coins are there that are ONLY available in a cache or through an in person trade? Of those, are they numbered? Trackable? What are the opinions on that? I am thinking about that as a distribution option for our personal coin that is still being designed. Quote Link to comment
+AtlantaGal
That I can think of offhand... Through Caches Only: The Shadow End Station In Person Only: Face 2 Face (donbadabon) Johnnie Lacy* *Also in caches. Quote Link to comment
SCP-173
I like coins like that (even though I only have one, the End Station coin). It gives them much more "value" in my opinion. I'm also very happy that the End Station coin is not trackable and cluttered up with undue stuff. Edited December 22, 2005 by Vargseld? ™ Quote Link to comment
+Lemon Fresh Dog
I think this is the way I may have to go on my next coin. Trading is fun, but I really want folks to "discover" my coin and enjoy seeing it in caches. My two personal editions had runs totalling 800 coins. Of this, 500 were sold (red-handed) and about 125 were traded (mostly geobones, some red-handed). The rest are for caches and should take me well into the future. My main reason for creating coins were: 1) I wanted a Moun10Bike coin (seriously) 2) I can never think of what to place in a cache that folks would like -- so coins it is: Geobones for "gifts", red-handed's for travellers My next edition will be more heavily wieghted to in-person and caches. Of course, there are a few collectors that I would want to make sure get my coin even though I will never likely cache in their area and/or meet them face-to-face. As a collector, I really only want coins I like. For example, two of my most recent favourite coins are the John Lacey and the CavScout ravens. I'll never see a Lacey (there is a .001% chance we'll meet), but CavScout traded with me. If someone really liked my coin I would like to get them one. It's not an exact science, but I do know that I like meeting cachers and I like putting coins into caches. Edited December 22, 2005 by Lemon Fresh Dog Quote Link to comment
Not So Lost Puppies
As a collector, I really only want coins I like. I really agree with that. I don't have an interest in getting every coin out there. Meeting a fellow cacher would make their coin more interesting to me than just a mailed trade in most cases, with afew exceptions of the ones that have some other personal meaning. There are some PC coins out there that I would like to get: Your LFD geobone and Kilted Cacher are two that immediately come to mind, besides of course a Moun10bike we do cache when we travel, so we would be able to get some of them out of our home territory for others to find. +Marky
Meeting a fellow cacher would make their coin more interesting to me than just a mailed trade in most cases... That's why I think Geocoin Woodstock I would be such a blast. Have an event that is focussed on geocoin trading! We had a small one recently and about 50 people showed up! Who knew geocoin collecting was so popular in our area? --Marky Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
If a coin maker never puts a coin in a cache, is it really a geocoin? When I make my sig coin (I've got a 1000 cache coin in the works that won't be a sig coin) about 5 will be given to some close friends, and the rest will be cache only, no trades. Who knew geocoin collecting was so popular in our area? --Marky You mean like this: Geocoin Bash! Shipping Costs? Extra Coins? I have been talking with a few people about hosting Geocoin Bash I for the Spring of 2006. For the first one, we are working to have this in the San Francisco Bay Area. Why the San Francisco Bay Area: 1) There are many caches in the Bay Area. For example, from where our new series SC Fire starts, there are 240 caches within 5 miles. 2) You have two chances to pick up FREE Geocoins: a. http://www.oakcoins.com/es.html b. http://www.oakcoins.com/series/scfire.html 3) Three Major airports within 60 minutes of each other, San Jose, Oakland, and San Francisco. Low Cost airlines like Jet Blue and Southwest Airlines fly to these airports. 1) Why a Geocoin Bash? A Geocoin Bash allows people from all over the world to meet in one location and trade Geocoins. We know how much it cost to pack and ship Geocoins all over the world. Not counting the many hours one spends tracking down those elusive coins. 2) Will there be a Geocoin produced? Yes, there will be a Geocoin. It will be trackable on Geocaching.com 3) What is the cost? For the Geocoin, we are on track to have it under $5.00 (trackable). For the event, we want to do it so there is little or no cost. 4) When and Where will the next Geocoin Bash be? We are planning to hold the next one next early fall somewhere on the East Coast. We are open to recommendations after the first one. 5) Can I help out with the bash? Yes, we are looking for people to help out. Because we understand too many cooks do spoil the food, please understand we cant have everyone help out. Of course, it wouldnt be all about Geocoins! There are lots of caches in the area. Thanks! Not So Lost Puppies
If a coin maker never puts a coin in a cache, is it really a geocoin? My thoughts exactly. I want my coins to go into caches and be found by unsuspecting cachers, many of whom may not have any idea about the geocoin craze going on. Quote Link to comment
