Cheaper Than Dirt often has the 30 cal cans. All I see now are 50's.

Major Surplus and Survival has 5 packs of the 30's for $15, + $7 for shipping. That's just over $4 a box. Hard to beat! I just ordered some.

Sportsmans Guide sells them for less than $3, but they're out of stock.

Army Surplus Warehouse has them for $4, + shipping.

After shipping, the 6 boxes from Cabellas are $32.74. Still a fair deal.

These ammo cans are European; a little thinner than the 30s. I just ordered 10 and the total came to $38.95. Doing the complicated math I get less than $3.90 per can.

I have also been using Lock&Lock containers for caches not way, way out in the woods, and have been very happy with their ability to keep moisture out. Plus, they are less likely to get blown up by the bomb squad. They also take paint fairly easily.

Comon, you've probably read all the thread I have and you know very well the bomb squads are a bunch of highyly trained underpaid paranoid trigger happy pyromancies who are just as willing to treat every lost and found teddybear, backpack, or gladware dish as a bomb even if it doesn't look like one.

(ok micro rant over)

Regarding the Europeon ammo cans at Major Surplus, they are slightly less than 3 inches wide, compared to the standard 30 cal can which is 3.5 inches wide. Some of them have canvas handles, some metal. I have picked up a few at the store for $2.95 and they were in very good condition.

For another small military can, with the same volume as a decon container, heavy gage aluminum, strong enough to stand on, with a rubber seal in its screw on lid and water proof ( I had one out as a cache in our most rainy winter in 100 years here, and it stayed dry.) For the incredible price of 6 for $10 try the German Army butter dish cans.
