Forum (n)

1. The public square or marketplace of an ancient Roman city that was the assembly place for judicial activity and public business.

2. A public meeting place for open discussion.

3. A medium of open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper or a radio or television program.

4. A public meeting or presentation involving a discussion usually among experts and often including audience participation.

5. A court of law; a tribunal.

6. Any discussion group accessible through a dial-in BBS, a mailing list, or a Usenet newsgroup . A forum functions much like a bulletin board; users submit postings for all to read and discussion ensues.

Contrast with(sic)real-time chatroom (sic) or point-to-point personal e-mail.

Chatroom (n)

1. A site on the internet where a number of users can communicate in real time (typically one dedicated to a particular topic).

Its not OED but it will suffice.

I agree with HH - this is a forum but below is a chatroom :)

Why not come and join the fun...Evenings are the busiest but you will find folks in there at all times of the day.

The instructions may look a little complicated but so long as you follow them carefully it is very easy.

The following link will allow you to get in to StuartP's Geocaching Chat Room without downloading a piece of software - although you will need to have 'Java' installed.  (If you have problems loading the webpage see the notes on Java below).

www.hokesters.co.uk/IRC/

Click the link above and then bookmark it for future use.

You will have to wait a moment whilst the applet logs on.

When you see 'End of MOTD Command' you are logged on to the server.

*NOTE 1. If you don't get 'End of MOTD Command' and you can see 'GeoGuest Nickname already in use'.  This means someone else is logging on.  Allow a couple of moments before refreshing the web browser (F5).

When logged on please type the following;

/nick *your cache name* (eg. /nick hokesters and press enter.

*NOTE 2. Your Chat Room Nickname must not contain anything other than alphanumeric characters and no spaces you may use hyphen '-' or underscore '_'.

when you have logged your nickname now type;

/join geocaching

You are now ready to chat - Enjoy!

Java Notes -

You must have Java installed to run this webpage.  Java is a small add-on for Internet Explorer or Firefox which allows your browser to run small programs within the browser window.

If you do not have Java installed you should be prompted to install it when you first run the chatroom link.  If not it could be because of your security settings.

Visit Java Home an click the 'Windows XPI - Download'.

Follow the instructions then try to reload the chat room link.  If you are still having problems it could be security settings in your browser.

In Firefox - Tools>>Options>>Web Features - ensure both Enable Java and Enable Javascript are ticked.

In IE - Tools>>Options>>Advanced - ensure Java is enabled.

If you are still having problems it is most likely to be your firewall settings.  At this point you need to contact the manufacturer/supplier/administrator of the firewall.

Of course if you are IRC savvy and have a stand-alone IRC client (such as mIrc or IceChat) you can follow these settings;

IRC Server: greed.uk.nixhelp.org

Server Port: 6667

Channel: #geocaching

We look forward to seeing you in there.

Just trying to drum up a bit of business ;)

Milton (aka Moote)

OMG I see a yes being posted here and Moote eating his words!

Don't worry you are not the only culprit on this thread!

Just checked - yep "Chatroom" is in the topic. :)

You ought to come on in we have got the fire on and someone just passed round the whiskey and mince pies!

Thanks for the offer Simon, i'm not a great lover of chat rooms, although I have been known to visit them in the past.

Chatroom may be in the topic title, but it is not about talking about a chat room, it is asking if this forum is a chat room or a forum?

It's looks to me as though this topic has been hijacked along the lines of a chatroom, espescially by the first 3 posts.

2202 asked a simple question, and all he has had is 2 decent answers (that includes your first answer Simon). Everything else has not been on topic what so ever.

Topic? Mmmm, the nostalgic chocolate bars of my youth!

To answer Tony's question, this is a forum, as it basically fits his suggested no. 2 definition. A chatroom requires dynamic conversational interaction, not just the automatic gainsaying of what everyone else has written.

"Oh no it doesn't."

"Oh yes it does."

And so on.

SP :)

I think it's a forum, as defined in your first definition.

That's nice. It means that discussions about what the weather is like as you run over SP on your way to log some DNFs on caches along the M25, picking up TBs from caches you have previously visited along the way, are okay.

It's all Mootes fault! :ninja:
