Silica Gel

Recommended Posts

Currently putting my first cache together, and was wondering if anyone has used [with any success] these packets. I have source of tons of these little packets. Was wondering if anyone has seen a big difference.

Found these couple threads, but generally are not to positive about them:

The problem is that they have a limited capacity. Typically the bag which comes with your new camera will be sized to absorb the condensation which will occur when the package, which was packed at room temperature in Taiwan, is air-shipped.

If you put silica gel in a (completely airtight) cache, it will keep it slightly drier for the first couple of weeks, but once people start opening it, thus changing all the air in a second, it will get overloaded.

These things don't actually make water disappear - it has to go somewhere. Think of it as a little vacuum cleaner for water - you still have to empty the bag from time to time.

You can take a film canister and drill a bunch of holes in it, stick the slilica gel pack in it, then tape the lid on it and label it accordingly. The holes will let the gel do it's job, and the extra layer of protection around it will give you a place to stick a small label telling what's inside.

SILICA GEL INSIDE - DO NOT EAT! - LEAVE IN CACHE
